Millions of American children are spending this fall semester taking at least some of their classes online, through Zoom, Google Meet and other platforms.And while many of the bugs, glitches and surprise Zoom "bombings" of this past spring have been fixed, experts say many threats remain.Arneesha Collins, parent of an elementary-aged boy, worries what her son is exposed to when she is not watching."I already don't want my son on the iPad or computer a lot," she said, "because when he gets on there he is already on YouTube."Laura Pipitone has two young children doing some learning at home, and says the technology is still frustratingly glitch-filled."Especially on the iPads the younger kids get, I have to log out and log back in every session," Pipitone said.She is afraid to leave her youngest one alone long at the computer."Parents are kind of expected to be in the room, so I feel like I am back in kindergarten," she said. "It's hard!"Cyber security expert Dave Hatter says hackers and predators are looking at all those children learning online as prime targets."These sort of threats against children have risen during the pandemic," Hatter said, "because kids are spending a lot of time online. You get things like 'Zoom bombing' where someone is screaming racial epithets or is semi-clothed and shows up in the video."Four things parents can doHatter, the head of Intrust IT, says parents of online learners need to take four basic security steps to ensure their screens are not open to prying eyes.Step 1: He says you should start by making sure your WiFi router is not using the default 1-2-3-4 password, or using a password that every kid in the neighborhood knows by now."It's difficult for parents to stay on top of this, but the bad guys on the other hand learn what the cool thing is, because they know where the kids will be," Hatter said.Step 2: Make sure you do regular updates of your PC and software, which patches holes that hackers will take advantage of."Installing the Windows updates is an absolute must," Hatter said. "But you gotta make sure you are updating Zoom as well, and the other software you are using on these devices."And he says make sure your school is following the latest suggestions for safe Zooming, such as the teacher being in the room at all times, and guests having to be invited in.Step 3: Hatter says you need to talk to your kids. Instruct your children to watch for strangers popping up online trying to befriend them on TikTok, Instagram, or other sites that, face it, kids often visit when class becomes boring."Warn your kids about this sort of thing. Tell them not to give personal info to someone you don't know; never agree to meet someone," he said.Step 4: Consider parental software for younger elementary-age children. Hatter suggests you look at services like Net Nanny, Norton Family Premier, Qustodio, or Kaspersky Safe Kids that limits sites children can visit, and tells you where they have been. Mike "Doc" Emrick, the legendary NHL broadcaster who has been calling hockey games for decades, is retiring. The New York Post was the first to report his retirement.“I hope I can handle retirement OK,” Emrick told the New York Post Sunday night. “Especially since I’ve never done it before. But I’ve just been extremely lucky for 50 years. And NBC has been so good to me, especially since the pandemic, when I was allowed to work from home in a studio NBC created."Emrick, who has been broadcasting hockey for 47 seasons, has been the lead play-by-play voice for national NHL broadcasts in the U.S. on Versus and NBC since 2005. Many districts across the country are looking ahead to this fall and trying to make plans about how students could, or should, return to the classroom. A nationwide pediatric group is urging local leaders, parents and education systems to collaborate and create policies that allow for as much in-person learning this fall as possible.The American Academy of Pediatrics released guidance on their website based on in-person attendance at schools being not only fundamental to children’s mental, social and physical development, but also playing “a critical role in addressing racial and social inequality … it is critical to reflect on the differential impact SARS-CoV-2 and the associated school closures have had on different races, ethnic and vulnerable populations.”The recommendations include masks, physical distancing, and outdoor play, with more specifics. Such as, the AAP recommends placing desks 3-to-6 feet apart as long as it allows children to attend school; the 3-foot distance can be used when face coverings are also being worn.Middle and high schools should avoid groupings of students inside doing activities involving exhalation, i.e. singing, exercising, etc. according to the recommendations. The AAP also encourages limiting locker use and moving from room-to-room for classes.The guidance extends to school faculty and staff, with the AAP urging districts to make sure adults in schools get the support they need to set a good example and stay healthy.“In the same way that students are going to need support to effectively return to school and to be prepared to be ready to process the information they are being taught, teachers cannot be expected to be successful at teaching children without having their mental health needs supported.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last updated their guidance to schools and care facilities in April and it is focused on quickly stopping an outbreak, cleaning facilities and maintaining continuity in education and meal accessibility.AAP acknowledges any school policy this fall should be flexible and nimble, able to respond to new information about the coronavirus and specific needs in each school, district and region.“Although schools should be prepared to be agile to meet evolving needs and respond to increasing knowledge related to the pandemic and may need to institute partial or complete closures when the public health need requires, they should recognize that staff, students, and families will benefit from sufficient time to understand and adjust to changes in routine and practices.” 2591
LUTZ, Fla. — A South Carolina man was arrested in Florida after Hillsborough County deputies say he planned to commit a crime he planned for eight months.The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said on Sunday, August 16 at 2:43 a.m., the suspect, Phillip Thomas, 24, entered a home within the Promenade at Lake Park in Lutz.Detectives learned Thomas parked his car at Idle Wild Church earlier that night, walked to the home, cut a hole in the patio screen, and remained there for about three to four hours. He was watching and listening through the windows, officials said.After the homeowner went to bed, Thomas came in through the back sliding door which activated the home alarm. It prompted the homeowner to look out the window and spot Thomas.The homeowner and a guest left the home in a car and called 911.When deputies arrived, Thomas was still inside the home.According to public records, the home is owned by Daria Berenato. She is a WWE wrestler who goes by the name Sonya Deville. “I have spoken to her and I’m glad she’s safe and I’m thankful and grateful that the sheriff's office took care of the situation immediately. Celebrity status aside this is sickening. I am a product of a sexual assault and have zero-tolerance or respect for any human being that would violate a person's privacy and or personal space," said WWE Superstar Titus O'Neil.Deputies discovered he was carrying a knife, plastic zip ties, duct tape, mace, and other items.Through the investigation, detectives discovered Thomas lived in South Carolina and came to Lutz specifically targeting the homeowner."We know the suspect was completely obsessed with the victim and they had been trying to engage in a conversation for several years, but were unsuccessful, and then Sunday night is when they tried to confront the victim," said Natalia Verdina, a public information officer with HCSO.Thomas told deputies he was planning to take the homeowner hostage."Our deputies are unveiling the suspect's disturbing obsession with this homeowner who he had never met, but stalked on social media for years," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "It's frightening to think of all the ways this incident could have played out had the home alarm not gone off and alerted the homeowner of an intruder. Our deputies arrived within minutes and arrested this man who was clearly on a mission to inflict harm."Thomas was charged with aggravated stalking, armed burglary of a dwelling, attempted armed kidnapping, and criminal mischief.We spoke with cybersecurity expert Stu Sjouwerman. From disinfecting desks to implementing social distancing guidelines, some employers are learning it still might not be enough to bring people back to their desks."There are people who have fears of returning back to work due to safety concerns. Maybe they might be at a higher risk due to a compromised immune system or someone else within their family so they have some concerns about returning. Some employees don’t want to return-- and some employees want to continue to work from home when they were able to do it during this period of COVID," says Amber Clayton, the Knowledge Center Director at the Society for Human Resource Management.Clayton says some reasons for an employee refusing to come back to the office are protected under law. For example, if the employee, or someone the employee lives with, has underlying health conditions that would make them at higher risk for being affected by COVID-19, or they're unable to return due to childcare reasons. Employment lawyers like Ruthie Goodboe agree, citing OSHA and the National Labor Relations Act."An analysis needs to be done by the employer to determine, ‘Am I able to separate that employee if they’re unwilling to return to work, am I required to do or take certain steps’ and then if I do that and they still don’t come to work, do I have a right to separate them," said Goodboe, an employment lawyer with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash Smoak & Stewart.Employers must also make sure they're following regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Family Medical Leave Act."If employers are following guidance from the CDC and from OSHA and limiting their exposure in the workplace, that should be satisfactory. However, there may be times that someone may be infected in the workplace and that employer may be held liable depending on the situation," Clayton said.But for those employees who simply have a general fear of COVID and despite any accommodations the business is taking, still don't feel comfortable coming back to work, it may be a breaking point."There's no federal or state laws that I’m aware of that requires an employer to provide leave based on someone’s fear that they may contract some type of disease whether it’s COVID-19 or something else. But employers should, through their policies and practices, determine what they’ve done in the past and ensure they’re being consistent and fair in their policies," says Clayton.Perhaps the biggest key for employers and employees in getting through this is communication."Stay calm, take a breath and make sure you’re communicating well with your employees to get all of the information. Do you understand what all of their concerns are? Because once their concerns are understood, it may be easy to resolve," says Goodboe.Employees and employers could ultimately find a mutually agreeable working situation to keep everyone comfortable and healthy at work. 2994
