As coronavirus cases reached a new high on Friday in the US, Dr. Anthony Fauci now believes a mask mandate is necessary to stop the spread of the virus. But Dr. Fauci acknowledges enforcing a mask mandate is a challenge. Adding to the challenge, officials in recent days say that family gatherings are becoming a significant reason why cases are growing throughout the US.“I think that would be a great idea to have everybody do it uniformly,” Fauci said in an interview on CNN on Friday. “And one of the issues though, I get the argument say, 'Well, if you mandate a mask, then you're going to have to enforce it and that'll create more of a problem.' Well, if people are not wearing masks, then maybe we should be mandating it."The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projects that near universal mask wearing outside of the household would save anywhere from 60,000 to 160,000 lives in the US between now and February 1.While many public institutions, such as grocery stores, restaurants, and other facilities have implemented mask and social distancing policies to help slow the virus, public health officials say smaller, more interment gatherings, are where many are letting their guard down. With colder weather setting in and major holidays upcoming, public health officials are becoming increasingly concerned as cases increase throughout much of the US.“Smaller more intimate gatherings of family, friends and neighbors may be driving infection as well especially as these gatherings move indoors and adherence to face coverings and social distancing may not be optimal,” said Dr. Jay Butler, deputy director of infectious diseases at the CDC. “I recognize that we are all getting tired of the impact that COVID-19 has had on our lives. We get tired of wearing masks but it continues to be as important as it’s ever been and I would say it’s more important than ever as we move into the fall season.”Health and Human Service Secretary Alex Azar agrees with Dr. Butler’s assessment.“We’ve got to keep focused on washing our hands, watching our distance and wearing our face coverings when we can't watch our distance and in particular being careful in household gatherings. This has become a major vector of disease spread,” Azar told CNN’s Jim Sciutto. 2303

As coronavirus cases begin to jump again in the United Kingdom, Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced Wednesday a nationwide ban on gatherings of more than six people. The ban goes into effect on Monday. While coronavirus cases in the UK currently pale in comparison to the spread of the virus in the US, the UK has seen a marked jump in infections. According to New York Times data, the rate of new cases has doubled from three weeks ago. Johnson’s announcement comes as the UK reported 32 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, the most in a single day since July 29.The UK has a population of 66 million, which is nearly one-fifth the population of the United States, which reported 462 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday.Previously, the UK had a ban on all gatherings of more than 30 people.“It will be enforced by the police. And anyone breaking the rules risks being dispersed, fined and possibly arrested,” Johnson said.Johnson told reporters on Wednesday that limiting gatherings is an important step in stopping the spread of the virus.“I should stress that if we are to beat the virus, then everyone at all times should limit social contact as much as possible and minimize interactions with other households,” Johnson said. “It's safer to meet outdoors, and you should keep your distance from anyone you don't live with, even if they're close friends or family.”Since the start of the pandemic, the UK has reported more than 41,000 coronavirus-related deaths. In April, the UK was among the hardest hit nations in the world, with its per capita death rate worse than the United States. But the number of coronavirus-related deaths, which peaked at nearly 1,000 per day, quickly dropped in May. As of last week, the UK was averaging fewer than 10 coronavirus-related deaths per day.But the spike in cases has prompted Johnson to impose a stricter mandate on social gatherings. The ban allow some exceptions for workplaces, schools, funerals and weddings.A number of other nations have implemented similar, but less stringent bans on gatherings. Australia allows gatherings of up to 50 people in private residences, and 100 people in non-residences. Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. An incident that began as an argument over masks led to an officer-involved shooting near Lansing, Michigan on Tuesday.A 43-year-old man from Grand Ledge was shot and killed by a police officer after a fight at a Quality Dairy store in Dimondale.Authorities say a 77-year-old man from Lansing who was wearing a mask and the 43-year-old man who wasn't wearing a mask got into an altercation. The unmasked man reportedly stabbed the masked man and fled the area. A deputy later spotted the vehicle and pulled him over.Once the man pulled over his car, police say he approached the deputy with two knives and a screwdriver.Authorities say the assailant continued to approach the deputy as she backed up, and she fired her weapon, fatally shooting the assailant. The deputy was not physically harmed and is on administrative leave. The case has been turned over to Michigan State Police. The 77-year-old man who was stabbed is reportedly stable. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1000

As mandatory face coverings become more and more common, keep in mind, some are better at protecting from viruses than others. When issuing their face covering guidelines, San Francisco specifically called out masks with one-way valves designed for “easier breathing”, warning that they allow for droplets to get out of the mask and potentially endanger others nearby. These valves are usually about the size of a coin on the side of the mask. The CDC, and many other health departments and officials, urge wearing a mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus because it can be spread through respiratory droplets. Those droplets are produced into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, sings, chants, shouts, etc. They can then land on other people nearby or be inhaled by others. The CDC recommends people wear a cloth face covering in public settings, to reduce the transmission of droplets into the air.“There are no high quality studies regarding the use of masks with additional types of various filters placed in them or with ‘breathing valves.’ While widely marketed with various claims, these have not been studied at all and it is unclear if they help or hurt the overall filtration efficacy against microorganisms,” read a statement from Marc Sala, M.D., Assistant Professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.People are being asked to leave N95 masks (without a valve) and surgical masks available for medical staff and essential personnel who are coming into daily contact with many infected patients. An N95 mask with an exhalation valve is not recommended because unfiltered air is sent through the valve and into the air, potentially carrying coronavirus droplets. “The presence of an exhalation valve reduces exhalation resistance, which makes it easier to breathe (exhale). Some users feel that a respirator with an exhalation valve keeps the face cooler and reduces moisture build up inside the facepiece. However, respirators with exhalation valves should not be used in situations where a sterile field must be maintained…” according to the CDC’s website.Dr. Sala said testing has shown things like multiple layers of cotton fabric is better than a single layer, material of a higher thread count is more effective, and overall, “these studies emphasized the notion that if a mask doesn’t have a good fit (has gaps) its effectiveness is dramatically reduced.” Dr. Sala said even if the cloth mask is not ideal, it can still play a major role in preventing illness as more masks are worn by the population as a whole.Bottom line, choose a fabric face covering that fits and is comfortable around your ears or head, and keep it on while in public, especially when social distancing is not possible, to protect you and the people around you. 2864
