MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An infant left inside a baby box at a northern Indiana fire department is safe and being cared for. The child was left in the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department's Safe Haven Baby Box in LaPorte County on Sunday. This was the second time in five months that the box has been used at this particular fire station, last November an infant was also left inside the box. “When this box was installed, we hoped that it would never be used," Coolspring Fire Chief Mike Pawlik said last November. "Yet we're thankful that it exists for cases just like the one."Baby boxes are safety incubators where mothers can anonymously surrender their newborn babies. The Safe Haven Law was authored by State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) in 2000 and allows parents who feel they are unable to care for an infant that is less than 30 days old to leave the child with staff at a designated safe haven location with no questions asked. The Safe Haven Boxes give parents a way to leave the child anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution“It is incredible to hear another infant’s life has been saved through the Safe Haven Law,” Merritt said. “This law provides overwhelmed parents with a safety net in a time of crisis, which could prevent the death of a baby. This is the second time in five months a baby has been discovered at this fire station, which shows people are aware of this law and this system is saving lives.”Last year, lawmakers approved a law allowing hospitals to install baby boxes where infants could be safely left inside. During the 2018 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed Senate Enrolled Act 340,  which allows fire stations that are staffed 24 hours a day to use baby boxes. 1791

However, the industry is ringing the alarm, warning that most childcare providers are on the brink of closing permanently.“The fixed cost in these small businesses is so high that you are already running at very close margins and then with COVID, that pushed everything over the edge,” said Serah Kaiel.Kaiel has owned and run a small day care, Little Thinkers Montessori in New York City, for nine years. In March, her enrollment dropped by almost 80%, while her cost to stay open went up substantially.“It is like 0 to ,000 per child extra per year,” said Kaiel. "Like for the PPE, for the cleaning products, for all the things that go into keep it as safe and the best practices.”After operating in the red for six months, most providers are now coming to terms with the reality that staying open may not be a possibility much longer.“I represent women of color, I represent single mothers, and we are working on the front lines in this pandemic and we have the most to lose with the least amount of resources available to us,” said Kaiel. “There are moments when it is really scary.”A recent survey done by the National Association for the Education of Young Children shows that without some government aid, roughly 50% of childcare providers throughout the country could close permanently by the end of fall.Experts point out such a substantial loss of childcare could force more people out of the workforce. Low-income workers and women would be disproportionately affected.“It has this massive impact on the economics of communities. It has this massive impact on the economics of society, on women having the same opportunities that men do,” said Rhian Allvin. "It has a ripple effect that is really dramatic."Allvin is with the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC is calling on Congress to act and allocate billion for the industry in the next stimulus package.“We have really strong Democrat support. We have really strong Republican support. So right now, the hold up in Congress I don’t think is childcare,” said Allvin. Rick Snyder activated the state's Emergency Operations Center to monitor the reentry of China's Tiangong-1 space station, which is expected to reenter the Earth's atmosphere between March 29 and April 2.While most of the space station is expected to burn up during reentry, there is concern that debris could make landfall. According to the Aerospace Corporation, the 8.5 ton space station could land along a strip of the United States from northern California to Pennsylvania, which includes the southern lower peninsula of Michigan. “While the chances are slim that any of the debris will land in Michigan, we are monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond quickly if it does,” said Capt.
