A South Carolina fifth-grader who was injured when a fight broke out in her classroom died Wednesday, school officials said.The student, Raniya Wright, died two days after the fight at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, Colleton County School District officials said."Weapons were not involved in this incident," the Colleton County Sheriff's Office said Thursday in a statement.The fight was between two fifth-grade students, the sheriff's office said. Although many consider vaping a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, researchers from the Ohio State University say it is not a good to make such claims at this time. Part of the reason is that research led by OSU Professor of Nursing and Medicine Loren Wold claims that there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes and their aerosol constituents, nicotine, carbonyl compounds, particulate matter, metals and flavorings can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. The study was published last week in journal Cardiovascular Research.The authors of the study say, however, that there is not sufficient data to make conclusions on the exact effect e-cigarettes have on the heart."Great caution and hesitation should remain concerning e-cigarette use until its health risk profile is better established," the study reads. "Therefore, additional high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively establish the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes."“Many people think these products are safe, but there is more and more reason to worry about their effects on heart health,” Wold said.The research comes as federal and state officials have been looking into why there has been an increase to the number of vapers who have suffered from lung disease due to vaping. As of last week, there have been 39 confirmed deaths and more than 2,000 cases of lung disease likely caused from vaping, the CDC said. Part of the problem, Wold said, is that the long-term effects of vaping is unknown. In 2011, there were 7 million people who used e-cigarettes. That number has since increased to 41 million. “We know these problems are seen in these studies looking at the short-term effects of vaping, but that research is inconsistent and the impact of chronic e-cigarette use is an outright mystery. A mechanic for American Airlines was arrested Thursday and accused of trying to sabotage a commercial airliner shortly before it was set to take off from Miami International Airport for the Bahamas with 150 people on board.Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani has been charged with "willfully damaging, destroying, disabling, or wrecking an aircraft, and attempting to do so," according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.Alani allegedly tried to damage or disable the aircraft's air data module (ADM) system, which reports aircraft speed, pitch and other critical data, on July 17.On Thursday, investigators interviewed Alani and he "admitted that he accessed the ADM" and that he "inserted a piece of foam into the ADM's inlet where the line connects and that he applied super glue to the foam so as to prevent the foam from coming off," the complaint says."Alani stated that his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers," investigators say in the complaint.The court documents say Alani told investigators that he was upset over a contract dispute between union workers and the airlines, and the dispute had cost him money.Alani allegedly explained that he tampered with the aircraft so he could get overtime working on the plane.As the plane went down the runway and pilots increased power to the engines, there was an error related to the ADM system and the takeoff was aborted.The aircraft returned to the concourse and no one on board was injured, the complaint says.American Airlines mechanics immediately inspected the aircraft and "discovered a loosely connected pitot tube, which connects directly to the ADM" and determined "the ADM appeared to have been deliberately obstructed with what appeared to be a dark Styrofoam-type material," according to the complaint.Authorities used surveillance video to identify Alani, the document says.American Airlines, in a statement to CNN, said, "At American we have an unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our customers and team members and we are taking this matter very seriously. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service, maintenance was performed and after a inspection to ensure it was safe the aircraft was returned to service. Americans traveling abroad are racing to try and get home, up against canceled or fully booked flights."This was our first international trip together, and we were going to spend St. Patrick's Day in Dublin," said Bree Steffen, who lives in San Diego.But for Bree Steffen and Sean Harris, the dream began to unravel while waiting for their connecting flight. "We were in Zürich when we found out about the travel restriction and when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. So, we were like, 'Oh my God. What do we do?'" said Steffen. The couple tried to book tickets home, but they would've cost upwards of ,000, so Steffen and Harris stuck to the original plan. "We still had a really good time, but it was a lot different than we had pictured," said Steffen. They felt especially safe in the countryside, outnumbered by four-legged friends. But the mood changed in Dublin, where nearly all museums, restaurants, and pubs were closed. "It was tough, it was tough going into a restaurant and knowing that the busiest day for the year for them is now the slowest day of the year," said Harris. "We were supposed to come back on Friday, but everything kept changing hourly, and we were so scared we'd get stuck there, and we can't get stuck there, we had to get back," said Steffen. For days the couple couldn't find a flight; they were either booked or canceled.
