The powerful tornadoes that plowed through Lee County in Alabama and killed at least 23 people left a path of destruction that looked "as if someone had taken a blade and just scraped the ground," the county sheriff said Monday. At daybreak, emergency crews and residents witnessed more of the aftermath of the twisters that Sheriff Jay Jones called "catastrophic," and the search was on for survivors and more victims. It appears that some people had only a five-minute warning Sunday afternoon before tornadoes ripped through the region.A tornado watch was issued for the area around noon. The first tornado warning for Lee County was issued at 2:58 p.m. ET, and the first reports of damage came just five minutes later, CNN Meteorologist Gene Norman said, according to National Weather Service data.It appeared that two tornadoes hit Lee County back-to-back within the span of an hour, Norman said.A warning for a second tornado was issued at 3:38 p.m. ET, with the first reports of damage coming 13 minutes later. At least a dozen tornadoes touched down in Alabama and Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to the NWS.The National Weather Service recorded EF-3 damage in southern Lee County. That classification means the damage was severe, with winds of 136 to 165 miles per hour. How the destruction unfoldedTornado watch for Lee County issued around 12 p.m. ETTornado warning 2:58 p.m. ETFirst reports of damage 3:03 p.m. ETFurther damage reports 3:30 p.m. ETSecond tornado warning 3:38 p.m ETFirst reports of damage 3:51 p.m. ETMore damage reported 4 p.m. ETAlabama's deadliest since 2011The 23 deaths reported on Sunday marked the deadliest day for tornadoes in Alabama since the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado that killed more than 200 people in 2011.The victims, including children, died in Lee County, Jones said. The White House on Sunday decried Democratic-led congressional investigations, saying Democrats are refusing to abide by "rules and norms" that govern oversight authority as they issue subpoenas for documents the Trump administration refuses to hand over."There are rules and norms governing congressional oversight of the executive branch, and the Democrats simply refuse to abide by them," White House deputy press secretary Steve Groves said in a statement. "Democrats are demanding documents they know they have no legal right to see -- including confidential communications between the President and foreign leaders and grand jury information that cannot be disclosed under the law."The White House, Groves said, "will not and cannot comply" with what he called "unlawful demands made by increasingly unhinged and politically-motivated Democrats."The administration's statement comes as Democrats become increasingly frustrated by what party leadership sees as unprecedented, across-the-board stonewalling of their oversight powers -- and various congressional investigations -- by the Trump White House.Last week, President Donald Trump invoked blanket executive privilege over special counsel Robert Mueller's full report, preventing the House Judiciary Committee -- which had previously subpoenaed the Justice Department for a full, underacted version of the report -- from obtaining it.Earlier Sunday, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff criticized the President's move, saying on ABC's "This Week" that there's no basis for Trump using executive privilege to keep Democrats from obtaining the full report."But here, the Trump administration has decided to say a blanket no; no to any kind of oversight whatsoever, no witnesses, no documents, no nothing, claiming executive privilege over things that it knows there is no basis for," he said. "There's no executive privilege over the hundreds of thousands of documents regarding events that took place before Donald Trump was President.""You can't have a privilege -- an executive privilege -- when you're not the executive," Schiff, a California Democrat, said.In a Sunday 2149

TORONTO, Canada – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) says it won’t send its team to the Tokyo Olympics unless they’re postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 Games were set to start on July 24 and run through August 9, but the ongoing spread of the COVID-19 has many calling for them to be rescheduled. That includes the COC, which is asking the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and the World Health Organization to postpone the Games for one year. COC said it would offer its full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games would bring.“While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community,” wrote 822
