(KGTV) - The Valley Fire claimed the home of a 78-year-old Jamul woman Saturday, along with many of her beloved animals.Cellphone video shot by Pat Menzies shows a thick wall of smoke over a ridge, as he drove his mother Eileen from her home, and away from the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire on Saturday. Around 2 pm, Eileen says she had only minutes to pack a few things, grab her three dogs and get out of her home on Prairie Drive."We were afraid it was going to come fast, especially since there were no planes, helicopters and fire engines there," said Eileen.Eileen says brushfires have gotten within a half-mile of her home in the past, but this felt different."i just had a gut feeling this one was going to take me out," said Eileen.The fear turned into reality, as Eileen and her daughter discovered when they got back on the property the next day. Eileen's trailer home of 17 years was burned to the ground. All her family heirlooms and almost all her possessions were gone."I felt numb because there was nothing I could do. It's going to be tough to get back online," said Eileen.On the day she learned what happened to her home, the toughest part was her search for her animals, in various pens and cages. Her goat, duck, turkey and three of 12 peacocks, were all found dead."It was sad because they were trapped. The turkey, duck and goats were my babies, and they're not with me anymore," said Eileen.That sadness hanging over Eileen as she begins her road to recovery. She knows it will be a long one."Constantly running into new chapters in your life ... I'm 78 and starting over," said Eileen.Eileen's home was insured. (KGTV) - Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force notified residents of Jacumba Hot Springs and Boulevard Thursday about the placement of a sexually violent predator. Law enforcement officers went door to door in the East San Diego County communities to make neighbors aware that Alan Earl James will be placed into the area on or before April 25. James is scheduled to move to 45612 Old Highway 80 after he is released from Department of State Hospitals Coalinga, sheriff’s officials said in a news release. RELATED: Sex crime survivors protest release of Alan Earl JamesOfficials said James has felony convictions from the early 1980s for kidnapping, sexual battery, rape by force, and lewd and lascivious acts against children under 14 years old. The victims were primarily girls, but boys were also preyed upon, officials said. Some of James’ victims argued against his release. “He will re-offend if he gets out. He did it once before. JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Water releases to Lake Okeechobee will be adjusted beginning today, Aug. 24. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says releases will achieve a 14-day average of 2,000 cubic feet per second from Moore Haven Lock and Dam and 1,500 cubic feet per second from St. Lucie Lock and Dam. "With continued paramount focus on Herbert Hoover Dike safety throughout 2018, we need to make increased discharges to slow the still dangerous rise in lake levels," said Jacksonville District Commander, Col. Jason Kirk. "In concert with the South Florida Water Management District, we continue to maximize storage nor and south of the lake to minimize the requirement for discharges." The lake stage was 14.57 feet as of Thursday. Under these current conditions, discharges up to 4,000 cubic feet per second are allowed to be released to the Caloosahatchee and up to 1,800 cubic feet per second to the St. Lucie. Crews will use flexibility when it comes raising flows, while they still work to reduce risk to the Herbert Hoover Dike. The St. Lucie average flow will increase by 330 cubic feet per second from current releases, although runoff water from rain in the St. Lucie basin could occasionally result in flows that exceed the target amount of 1,500 cubic feet per second. Staff with the Jacksonville District will continue to monitor conditions and will make adjustments to water flows as needed.  1458

(KGTV) — Neighbors in a rural East County town are once again fighting the possible release of a sexually violent predator into their community.Currently, the Department of State Hospitals is considering Thomas Cornwell as the next new resident of the Jacumba Hot Springs area. Jacob says the individuals should, instead, be kept behind bars."As far as I'm concerned, they gave up their right to freedom when they preyed on our young and most vulnerable. They don't belong in any town. They belong behind bars," Jacob said in a statement.Since 2015, nine of 12 sexually violent predators in the county have been released into the East County. Five of 12 have violated the conditions of their release. Four have been returned to a state mental institution.Cornwell's release hasn't been finalized.
