BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee school district has issued an apology for a social studies assignment that asked students to pretend to be slave-owners and brainstorm expectations for their slaves.The Tennessean reported Thursday that Williamson County Schools and Sunset Middle School apologized for the assignment, saying it was inappropriate. The homework also assigned other tasks including the creation of a political cartoon depicting immigrant labor in the U.S. and writing a public service announcement about the hazards of living in urban areas.The two teachers who assigned the homework also apologized, saying in a statement that the assignment has been pulled and won't be graded.The Tennessee Department of Education says the middle school is 70 percent white. 785

(KGTV) - The fate of a decades-old neighborhood icon in Bonita is about to be decided in court.For nearly 23 years, Nisreen Stephan and her family have been making pizza at their pizza shop, Giant Pizza King, on Central Avenue. But these days, running her business includes a slice of uncertainty. "Very stressful and very sad," said Stephan.Next Monday, Stephan and her husband will head to court. Their landlord, Alcott Estates, L.P., says their lease has expired, but the Stephans argue they exercised an extension that gives them another 2 years. Stephan says the landlord crossed out the extension option on their lease without their approval."They should honor the rest of the lease," said Stephan.The landlord's plan: to replace their business with a drive-thru Starbucks. Right now, less than 200 feet away, is a Starbucks in the same shopping plaza. That Starbucks would reportedly be replaced by parking."This is our retirement, our nest egg ... I love Bonita. It's like a part of the family. I want to serve as along as I can," said Stephan."This place is like second home. It's the best and it has to stay," said longtime customer Mike Troy.Stephan says it they are forced to close, she's hopeful of opening at another site in Bonita. BARTOW, Fla. — The grave of a U.S. veteran buried 19 years ago in Bartow, Florida was dug up, according to Bartow Police. His clothes were taken right off his body and found on the ground near the casket. Family members said they can’t understand who would do this. The grave belongs to 75-year-old Willie Graham, who was laid to rest in 1999 after he spent his entire life giving to others. He served in the Army during World War II and was a math teacher in Polk County for years. Graham is well known in the Bartow community, and his grave site is next to his mother and father and several other relatives."To take his funeral garb, his clothing off of him and just have it thrown on the ground, I just can't wrap my head around it,” said Cheryl Brown, Willie Graham’s niece. Her family came to the site Sunday to lay flowers down on her mother's grave when they noticed a blue tarp on top of Graham's grave site. According to police, it had been discovered by a city parks and recreation employee on May 10. "It had to take two or three people several hours to get this done. It had to be done at night where no one can see it,” said family member Otto Brown.  Family members are confused why police couldn’t find any of them to notify, but police said they don’t have records because it’s not city property.The report said police attempted to get information from the funeral home that did the burial 19 years ago, but said they also don’t own the property. Scripps station WFTS in Tampa reached out to Coney Funeral Home, and are waiting to hear back.Police said they are also trying to find out who did this. Brown said they don't bury their family members with valuables."That's a very evil human being that did this and the world could do without them,” Otto Brown said. Willie’s wife, who lives in Miami, can’t make it to the gravesite because she just had hip surgery, but said she is also sick to her stomach over this. "Right now what's important is for us to put my uncle back at rest,” Cheryl Brown said.The family is in contact with police at this point. BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - A helicopter made a hard landing in the Anza-Borrego desert about three miles east of Borrego Springs in East San Diego County Monday, deputies said.Four people were on board the Robinson R-44 helicopter when it went down about 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Office.Three people were treated at the scene, according to The Borrego Sun. Deputies said they had minor injuries.The helicopter is registered to Big Blue Corp of Las Vegas. 10News is working to confirm that it may have been operated by Big Blue Air, a tour company based in Palm Springs. A company representative had no immediate comment on the landing.Borrego Springs Airport officials said the male pilot was on the way to the Rams Hill Country Club in Borrego Springs.The helicopter landed in rough terrain near Inspiration Wash, officials said. The area is accessible to 4WD vehicles via dirt track. Temperatures are in the high 70s.The FAA and NTSB will investigate the landing. 1022
