SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wildfire season is here and county officials want to make sure San Diegans are prepared. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Cal Fire also offers tips on what to include in an emergency kit. EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT CHECKLIST· Three-day supply of non-perishable food and three gallons of water per person.· Map marked with at least two evacuation routes· Prescriptions or special medications· Change of clothing· Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses· An extra set of car keys, credit cards, cash or traveler’s checks· First aid kit· Flashlight· Battery-powered radio and extra batteries· Sanitation supplies· Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)· Don’t forget pet food and water!Items to take if time allows:· Easily carried valuables· Family photos and other irreplaceable items· Personal computer information on hard drives and disks· Chargers for cell phones, laptops, etc. 2846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Pacific Trails Middle School student Kevin Luo has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee.The 8th grader won the bee at 12:30 p.m. after a grueling three and a half hours of spelling. This year's winning word was gradine, which is "a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar."Last year's winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School. Yash Hande advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Victims in a vehicle vandalism spree in Lakeside are hopeful for a break in the case, after the teen vandals apparently recorded and shared their exploits.From a broken side mirror and a cracked sunroof to the green-colored graffiti, Stephanie Starkey's Tuesday night discovery was painful."I cried. It hurt. I love my car," said Starkey.Starkey says she had taken 2011 Hyundai Sonata into a mechanic, who parked it on Woodside Avenue. Along that street, at least three other vehicles were spray-painted and one car was keyed. Some of that vandalism played out on cellphone video. Deputies say they're looking over an 8-second video, which has been shared on Instagram, showing a teen smashing Starkey's car several times with a skateboard. In the video, several voices can be heard laughing. "Can't even describe the feeling of emptiness. A hurt, broken feeling. I'm getting ready for a new job. Now I have no way to get to work ... It's obviously something they get an adrenaline rush out of ... Disgusted. Kids with nothing better to do," said Starkey.Deputies say they have not yet made an arrest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — USO San Diego's annual "Santa Store" event kicks off with a special event Tuesday night at their downtown office.The event allows children of military service members to pick a free present they can give their parents as a holiday gift."It just helps give a little more holiday cheer for our service members who do so much to keep us safe and secure at home," USO San Diego CEO Lorin Stewart told 10News.Volunteers collected and wrapped thousands of presents, including watches, tool kits, headphones, makeup kits, and handbags. The parents stay outside the Santa while USO San Diego volunteers help the children select the right gift. "They love being able to talk about what mom and dad are into and what they like, and then have that surprise under the tree," said military spouse Ashley Camak, who organizes the annual event. "Just makes it a magical moment for them."The evening also includes a meal, play area, and chance to take a picture with Santa. The "Santa Store" will be open December 4-6 from 5-8pm. 1040

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When a car breaks down or a housing voucher falls just short, San Diegans can slip through existing safety nets and into homelessness. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and members of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless announced a proposal Monday to address those shortfalls in traditional housing assistance through what’s called a “flex pool.”Based on models used in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, the Flexible Funds for Housing Program would combine government and private funds, with fewer restrictions on who qualifies and how the money is used. RELATED: San Diego homeless count 2019: Data shows over 8,000 living on county streets or in sheltersThe result, supporters say, would be a pool of funds that can get people off the streets and into housing faster, and keep others from winding up on the streets in the first place.“This program has the opportunity to be a difference-maker,” Fletcher said. “Instead of one population, we can create a housing platform that can serve anyone who has a need and can allow us to move quickly.”The County Board of Supervisors will take an initial vote on the proposal Tuesday.
