TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Tampa gas station after she claims the station's market sold her son "defective capsules" of kratom, which led to his death.Laura Lamon filed the wrongful death lawsuit filed against Sligh Petrol Mart operated by Anjiya C- Store Inc., on May 18 for selling her 27-year-old son Christopher Waldron the herbal supplement capsules.Lamon is suing Sligh Petrol Mart for negligence. Count three of the filing claims that Slight Petrol Mart displayed “the capsules next to over-the-counter oral medications and selling the capsules as a product taken orally when the capsules were not safe to orally ingest.” The lawsuit LAO alleges that “Sligh Petrol Mart failed to provide its customers, including Mr. Waldron with any reasonable warnings or instructions or with the capsules. The failure to provide a reasonable warning or instructions made the capsules unreasonably dangerous.”Waldron died on July 7, 2017 from what the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy report says was “intoxication by Mitragynine (kratom)."The toxicology report shows that Waldron’s levels for Mitragynine were 1.8 mg/L — levels that are considered extremely high.According to Associated Medical Examiner Leszek Chrostowsk, if Waldron didn't take kratom, he'd be alive today.Lamon said her son struggled with an addiction to prescription painkillers for more than a decade. When she got the phone call from Tampa Police that her son might have died from an overdose; she assumed it was from a prescription painkiller.“I was shocked, I thought it would for sure be opiates, for sure. I had no idea about this,” Lamon said.  According to Lamon, the capsules Waldron took before he died were labeled "Optimized Plant Meditated Solutions (O.P.M.S.) Gold." The front of the packet identifies the supplement as Mitragyna Speciosa Botanical Extract. The back of the package says the product contains Mitragyna Speciosa Leaf Extract and that it contains 60mg of Mitragynine.There are no instructions on the packet, just a warning that claims the pills are “only for use as a botanical specimen. TAMPA, Fla. — A creation to help combat the coronavirus from USF Health and Tampa General Hospital is now helping people across the world.When the COVID-19 pandemic started, researchers worked to fill in gaps from the shortages that came with it, including nasal testing swabs.“Unfortunately that component of the test kit was missing because it actually comes from overseas and actually it’s manufactured in northern Italy and if we recall back to March that is where everything was shut down and so that directly impacted our ability to be able to start testing for COVID in the U.S.,” said Summer Decker, Ph.D., the director of 3D clinical applications at USF radiology and TGH.So a team used technology in their lab to create a 3D nasal swab.“We worked with our colleagues here and the department of infectious disease and emergency medicine to be able to come up with an alternative to that swab that was in the test kit that actually was patient safe, comfortable and actually was able to capture that viral test that we needed so badly to do,” said Decker.Quickly, they moved from design to clinical research, partnering with Northwell Health in addition to TGH.“So suddenly we were getting bags and bags of these test kits thousands a week and it’s what saved us and I think in some ways it saved the Tampa Bay area because it allowed our hospital to really keep up this high volume testing,” said Dr. Jason Wilson, the associate medical director of TGH’s emergency department.That clinical trial is now completed.“What we found was pretty amazing. They performed as well and in some cases even better than the traditional swab,” Decker said. “That clinical trial has now come out it’s been published in a top journal for infectious disease.”Wilson said the hospital still uses them when there’s not enough standard of care swabs.The team also shared the information with the swab for other hospitals and agencies facing shortages, so they could create them. Since then, Decker said tens of millions are being used in more than two dozen countries.“It’s pretty incredible to us. We all kind of keep pinching ourselves,” Decker said.She says to her, the swab represents collaboration.“It’s not just a COVID thing. TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy died Saturday in a crash in Temecula, the Department confirmed. According to the Department, Deputy Matthew Creed died after being ejected during single-vehicle a crash on De Portola Road just east of Calle Arboles just after 9 a.m. Saturday. TAMPA, Fla. — Commuters at Tampa International were hit with a serious dose of puppy love on Friday afternoon.The pup-arazzi was on hand to capture the moment a service dog went into labor while waiting for a flight at Tampa International Airport. Elli, short for Eleanor Rigby, is a two-year-old Labrador Retriever and service dog. She was waiting to fly to Philadelphia with her owner Diane Vanatter when she went into labor.  Tampa Fire Rescue was on hand to help deliver the puppies.   532
