GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says he will deputize every gun owner in his county to put down any violent protests his deputies can’t handle alone.Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels gave no indication in a three-minute video released Wednesday that any demonstrations are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.Daniels also said he would protect any peaceful protests, but added that if anyone starts “tearing up Clay County, that is not going to be acceptable.”“If we can’t handle you, I’ll exercise the power and authority as the sheriff and I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in the county and I’ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility,” said Daniels, sporting a white cowboy hat as he stood in front of 18 deputies.Daniels, who is African American, said in the video that his department has a “great relationship” with its residents, but “if you come to Clay County and think for one second we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken.”“The second you step out from up under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you and give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and glory for all that five minutes will give you.”Daniels, a Republican finishing his first term, is being challenged by six opponents in the upcoming election. He is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after his former employer, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, announced last year that he’d had an affair with a co-worker when he was running its jails. GREEN BAY, Wisc. — A man was arrested for his seventh OWI after police say he threw stolen beer and meat out of his van with officers in pursuit. The Brown County Sheriff's Office received a call from a supermarket that Timothy Andrews, who was on their watch list for retail theft, was in the store. Authorities spotted Andrews inside a van in the parking lot and deputies say he claimed to have knives and gun when they approached him.Andrews refused to get out of the van, according to investigators, and sped away from the deputies, throwing stolen beer, meat and clothing out of the window during the high-speed chase. Authorities say the van lost control at least twice during the chase, as it weaved in and out of oncoming traffic on busy streets. "Pursuits are always a balance. You're always trying to balance public safety with the apprehension of the person. And in this case, this man was doing a lot of things," Brown County Sheriff's Capt. Dan Sandberg said. The van finally spun out of control and stopped on a residential street where the suspect was arrested. Andrews, 48, faces several charges in the case including 7th offense OWI, probation violation, obstructing an officer, shoplifting and retail theft.   1280

Ford could be next.Ford (F) said this summer that it was planning to radically reshape its business, and could close or scale back unprofitable operations in some regions. It said it would spend up to billion on the transformation.The company has revealed little detail about its plans. Adam Jonas, the auto analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he believes Ford is preparing to slash 25,000 jobs worldwide. He expects that most of the cuts will be in Europe, where Ford has long struggled, but he said North American plants and workers won't be spared.Like GM, Ford is reinventing itself to compete in an industry undergoing radical change. HAWTHORNE (CNS) - Southern California-based SpaceX will look to achieve another milestone late Friday evening when it attempts to launch the first test flight of its sleek capsule designed to carry astronauts to the International Space Station.The Crew Dragon, a stepped-up version of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that is used to carry cargo to the Space Station, is scheduled for to launch at 11:49 p.m. California time Friday from Cape Canaveral in Florida, propelled by a Falcon 9 rocket.
