SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With just three weeks to go, the Veterans Village of San Diego says they're about 0,000 short on cash donations for this year's "Stand Down" event.Stand Down, now in its 32nd year, is a weekend-long event that helps homeless veterans connect to all the services they need to get off the streets.Program Director Darcy Pavich says people and companies across San Diego typically donate about 0,000 worth of in-kind donations and 0,000 in cash each year. While the in-kind contributions are on track, the cash is short. Pavich says that means they won't be able to buy a lot of the items that can't be donated."What we won't have is things like the tables and chairs, cots to sleep on, some the structure that we build that we have to purchase," she says.Around 800 homeless veterans go to the Stand Down event each year. Marine Corps Veteran Ritesh Kumar Patel says it was the difference between him living on the streets and getting his life back together."It was mind-blowing," he says of the amount of help he got. "I was on the verge of dying, and I didn't realize it, and I didn't know, and I didn't know there was help out there."Patel has been living at the Veterans Village for three years now. He's recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and PTSD. He's also studying for a bachelor's degree in business.He says Stand Down made it all possible."I've seen the benefits that you can get by just being willing to listen," says Patel. "My life has changed."Pavich says she believes donations are down because the event has been moved to earlier in the year. Traditionally, it has been held on the same weekend as Comic-Con in late July. Last year, the VVSD moved it to late June. Pavich thinks people who wait until the last minute to send donations don't know about the earlier date."Stand Down is the in-road to saving lives," she says. "When we can offer someone their life back, you can't put a dollar value on that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Video posted to Facebook Wednesday showing a violent encounter between a Pacific Beach worker and homeless man has already gained hundreds of shares and comments.You can see someone come out of B-Mo's Sandwich Shop on Garnet Avenue and push a table into a shirtless man's head, then begin throwing his belongings into the street. 10News reached out to the owner of B-Mo's but were told he wasn't available for an interview Thursday.But Pacific Beach locals who saw the video told 10News the video shows San Diego's homelessness issue has reached a boiling point locally."If you look at the video you can tell it's at the point of escalation," said Mike Bremer, who owns a nearby tattoo shop.Bremer says while he might not agree with how things played out, he understands how it could happen. "I don't condone using that kind of violence I'm here to support because something needs to be done," Bremer said.Bremer and other locals said they deal with issues related to the homeless on a near daily basis and it can make doing business difficult. Thursday, two San Diego Police officers arrived at B-Mo's, but wouldn't comment. A spokesperson for SDPD said officers were initially called out when the confrontation happened but the homeless man wasn't cooperative and the other man didn't want any further action taken. Police said Thursday in light of the video evidence they've now opened up a criminal investigation into the incident. It's unclear if anyone will be charged. 1502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person died and another was hospitalized after a single-car crash near the harbor in downtown San Diego Sunday morning.Authorities say the crash happened on North Harbor Drive and Broadway just after 2 a.m. Police say one person died at the scene and a woman was rushed to the hospital following the crash.Harbor Police say the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and crashed into a palm tree causing the vehicle to catch fire.Officers said they believe the woman was ejected from the car. Police are working to identify both victims of the crash.Police say though the car is unrecognizable following the crash, they believe the car is an exotic vehicle.Harbor Drive will remain closed for at least the next three hours, according to police. 817

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A trip to a dog park in Ocean Beach ended in a hospital visit for one San Diego couple.“I want her to go to jail, she assaulted my husband, and I’m angry about it,” said Ash O’Brien.O'Brien said she and her husband were at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon with their three-month-old puppy. They sat at a picnic table and began enjoying a meal when a woman reportedly confronted them for not wearing facial coverings and eating at the park where there is a no food policy.The confrontation ended with O’Brien’s husband being pepper-sprayed by the woman.“If we knew there was a no food policy, we wouldn’t have brought it into the park,” said O’Brien. “The lady who maced him automatically started saying stuff about us not wearing a mask when we were social distancing; there was no one near us.”O’Brien said that after exchanging words, the woman walked away from the picnic table but returned after a few minutes and did the unexpected.“She just came up without saying anything and just stuck the mace can right in front of my face,” said O’Brien.“My husband, being a good guy, walked in front of her and was like ‘hey calm down please don’t do this’ and then she grabbed him and just starting macing him, she used the entire can on him.”“We drove to the hospital, he got treated and everything,” said O’Brien.O’Brien said the pepper spray got on her arms and started to burn, while her husband was sprayed in the face.A witness captured part of the incident on camera and told ABC 10News she was shocked at what she was seeing. She recorded the woman’s license plate number.The couple filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. The department confirmed they took a misdemeanor battery report but could not immediately provide further details.O’Brien was thankful none of the dogs at the park were injured by the pepper spray and wants the woman to be held accountable for the incident.“People don’t need to be getting assaulted for not wearing a mask in a public outdoor area,” she said. 2055
