Scientists knew 2020 was going to be an active tropical storm and hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean. We’re now running out of names on the official list, so what happens next? The Greek alphabet.In early August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 19-25 total named storms in the Atlantic this year, and 7 to 11 becoming hurricanes. Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research Center also predicted an above-average year, with about 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes.With so many storms were predicted, why wasn’t a longer list of names created? Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center, a group within NOAA, has released a list of 21 potential names in alphabetical order. “They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization,” according to NOAA.The lists are rotated every six years, meaning names from 2019 will be used again in 2025. Names are sometimes retired from the list when a named storm is so deadly or costly that reusing the name would be inappropriate for “reasons of sensitivity.”Yes, 21 names and not 26. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — From pre-made salads and sandwiches to ready-to-make meal kits and online ordering, the grocery store has become a conveyor belt of innovation the last few years.It’s time to throw another piece into the basket — driverless delivery. Kroger, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based grocery chain that operates Fry’s Food Stores, announced Thursday, Aug. 16, that it will begin testing its driverless delivery program in Scottsdale, Arizona. In June, the company said it was exploring the program and had partnered with Nuro, a company founded in 2016 that makes unmanned vehicles, but had not named where they would be tested.Now we know where.Starting Thursday, the program will only be available to those living in the 85257 zip code and within two miles of the Fry’s grocery store at 7770 E. McDowell Road in Scottsdale (near Scottsdale and North Hayden Roads).Here are a few things you need to know:WHAT IS IT?Forget going to the grocery store and walking the aisles to grab the milk, eggs and cheese. Under the test program, customers will be able to order their groceries via the Fry's Food Store app and website and have them delivered to their home by one of Nuro’s ten unmanned Toyota Prius vehicles.Each vehicle will deliver the groceries to a home’s curbside and can deliver up to 15 bags of groceries, said Pam Giannonatti, corporate affairs manager with Kroger.HOW SAFE IS IT?“Safety is Nuro’s top priority. SANTA ANA (CNS) - District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said today the murder indictments of five people -- including a man aiming to lead the Orange County chapter of the Mexican Mafia -- will send a message that investigators are disrupting activities of the notorious prison gang."Our hope is this certainly will disrupt what they're doing right now," Rackauckas said. Five men were indicted in March in connection with the Jan. 19, 2017, killing of 35-year-old Robert Rios in Placentia.Rios was killed for allegedly not paying "taxes" to the gang on drug sales, Rackauckas said. Johnny Richard Martinez, 42, Gregory David Munoz, 30, Ysrael Jacob Cordova, 33, Ricardo Valenzuela, 38, and Augustine Velasquez, 22, were all indicted for the killing.They're also facing a special circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery, which could open them to the death penalty.They are also charged with conspiracy, participating in gang activity and burglary, and they face sentencing enhancements for gang activity.Cordova also faces a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a gun causing death and the other defendants face a sentencing enhancement for the vicarious discharge of a gun causing great bodily injury, according to court records.Several law enforcement experts say Martinez, who had been organizing a hunger strike in the Orange County Jail, is gunning to replace Orange County Mexican Mafia boss Peter Ojeda.There has been a void in the gang's leadership since Ojeda died June 7 at the age of 76 while serving a prison sentence for continuing to run the gang from a prison cell.The hunger strike ended Friday evening when the last inmate accepted meals, according to Ran Grangoff, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Undersheriff Don Barnes told City News Service on Friday that investigators suspected the hunger strike was a ploy by Martinez to get moved to a cell where he would have more freedom to get messages out to his gang.Martinez has signaled he may want to represent himself on one of his cases, so he would be given more access to a phone and other communication resources, said Senior Deputy District Attorney Dave Porter, the prosecutor on his case.Martinez was serving a prison sentence for murder in 1994 when he allegedly helped orchestrate Rios' killing, according to court records.He had been sentenced then to 15 years to life in prison, Rackauckas said. Martinez is also charged in connection with the attempted murder in Placentia in August 2017 of Gregory Munoz -- one of the defendants now indicted in connection with the Rios killing in January of last year.Also charged in the attack on Munoz were Robert Martinez, 36, Frank James Mosqueda, 39, and Omar Mejia, 30.According to one of the attorneys on the case, Munoz allegedly complained that Johnny Martinez did not tell Munoz that his girlfriend was cheating on him, and Martinez felt disrespected by the griping, leading to the attack. Mosqueda is accused of actually shooting Munoz, the attorney said.Cordova, Valenzuela, Velasquez and Charles Frederick Coghill, 35, were all charged with murder last year in connection with the Rios killing, but Coghill was not included as a defendant in the March indictment.But Coghill, who was listed as a witness before the grand jury that handed down the indictment, is still facing charges in the case. Coghill apparently made a deal with prosecutors to testify against the other defendants, one of the defense attorneys on the case said.According to the indictment, from Oct. 8, 2016, through Jan. 22, 2017, Johnny Martinez, who's also known as "Crow," allegedly communicated via cellphone while in the Salinas Valley State Prison in Monterey County about 3,697 times with Munoz, who was incarcerated in the Calipatria State Prison in Imperial County.Munoz allegedly communicated via cellphone with Cordova about 50 times from Jan. 18-19, 2017, while he was incarcerated but Cordova was not, the indictment alleges. He also allegedly communicated via cellphone with Valenzuela during those same days about 43 times, according to the indictment.Munoz is also accused of contacting Velasquez about three times via cellphone, the indictment alleges. During those same days in January 2017, Munoz allegedly contacted Coghill about 58 times through cellphone, the indictment alleges.Munoz allegedly directed Coghill to "pick up a silver Chrysler 300 automobile and a semi-automatic firearm from a female named Imelda in Santa Ana," on Jan. 19, 2017, according to the indictment. Munoz also told Coghill to drive to an Anaheim hotel to pick up Cordova, Valenzuela and Velasquez on Jan. 19, 2017, the indictment alleges.After arriving at 941 Vista Ave. in Placentia on Jan. 19, 2017, Cordova, Valenzuela and Velasquez confronted Rios in the front yard of a residence, where "Velasquez detained Robert Rios at gunpoint while (Cordova) and (Valenzuela) entered the residence," the indictment alleges.Rackauckas told reporters Monday that "at least" the indictment of Martinez and his alleged cohorts will send a message to his criminal organization that investigators are on to the smuggled cell-phone scheme. (KGTV) - A kindergartner walked out of his Santee school, crossed a busy four-lane road and made it to his home more than a mile away, his mother told 10News Thursday.The Cajon Park Elementary student had been placed in a 3rd grade classroom with his upperclassman buddy when his grandmother arrived to pick him up.According to the 5-year-old boy’s parents, the 3rd grade teacher told the boy to pack his things because he was going home and sent him to the office alone.The boy didn’t fully understand the instructions and walked past the office to his home, crossing busy Magnolia Ave.There is only one gate in and out of the school and the boy apparently passed through it undetected.School administrators noticed the boy was missing about half an hour later and told his grandmother, who panicked.The boy’s mother said she realized something was wrong when her doorbell camera sent an alert. She looked at the video and saw her son on the front porch with a woman approaching him.The woman turned out to be a school administrator who had been searching for the boy.Rob Cunningham has a kindergartner at the school and was concerned by the incident.“We trust the school to know where our child is when we drop them off and expect them to be here when we pick them up,” Cunningham said.Santee School District Superintendent Dr. Kristin Baranski responded to 10News’ request for comments, saying the boy was found safe within 15 minutes.She added the school has a practice of sending a buddy with younger children when they need to visit the school office but in this case, the guest teacher did not follow the practice.Administrators will put additional communication practices in place with guest teachers to make sure they are aware of the policy, Baranski said. 1789
