CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of Marines recovering from injuries are at Camp Pendleton this week for the Warrior Games Trials. They're competing to represent the Marines at the National Games, but also finding new ways to heal from their injuries."It helps you know you're not alone," says Lance Corporal Jay Alan Davis, who was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder while on duty. This is LC Davis' first time at the games. He says it's been uplifting to find a sense of camaraderie among the athletes."If you're able to sit there and talk to somebody about it, they're more likely to go to you," he says. "Then you don't have to feel alone. You don't have to be alone."That's the same sentiment that brought Tisha Knickerbocker to the games in 2012. Tisha was a life-long athlete until she broke her back. Finding a way to compete still has helped her mental recovery."It improved everything," she says. "It was great. I really can't find a word that accurately describes the feeling that it gave me to get an old part of myself back."The games run from March 4-12 at Camp Pendleton. Many of the athletes will advance to the National Department of Defense Warrior Games in September in San Antonio. 1222

Can you imagine a pile of trash twice the size of Texas? That's what's floating in the Pacific Ocean right now.A group started an ambitious project to clean it up.Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, has waited five years to see his idea put into action. That idea consists of a 2,000-foot long barrier, with a 10-foot skirt below that’ll help get plastic out of the ocean.“2,000 feet is a pretty big clean up system, and just imagining that the future one will probably be you know maybe twice as large,” says Slat. It's work starts at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch--an area between California and Hawaii--with a pile of trash three times the size of France.  “You go out there, it's all blue. The thing is you're all miles away from any human activity and you start to see like objects that you can see in your kitchen,” says Laurent Lebreton, lead oceanographer. “So, it's just very striking like you wouldn't expect.”The system will corral the plastic floating on the surface, so fish and other ocean life can swim underneath. Then, smaller boats take the plastic back to shore for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup says it can extract 50 percent of the plastic in the patch every five years.  “That's a huge goal,” says Dr. Mikki McColb-Kobza, with Ocean First Institute. “If they are able to do that, I think that is a really big dent into the problem.”Dr. McColb-Kobza says the system is meeting an unaddressed need.  “There really haven't been a lot of other projects trying to go out and bring trash bag to try and figure out a way to bring it back,” he says.  Still, some say the system creates a false sense of security, and more focus should be placed on keeping plastic out of the ocean to begin with.  But Dr. McColb-Kobza says the project is a great way to get that conversation started.  “Really the key is not only to clean up what is there, but it's to think about why you know do we live in this plastic throw a way society.”   1990

CHICAGO, Ill. – McDonald’s says it’s giving away 10,000 free McRibs to fans who show off their clean-shaven face or smooth skin.To claim a free sandwich, McDonald’s says you must post a photo of your cleanly-shaven or baby-smooth face on your public Twitter or Instagram profile, using #Shave4McRibSweepstakes and tag @mcdonalds. Stories do not count. The first 10,000 entries will receive a code for a free McRib, available via McDelivery with Uber Eats, while supplies last. The chain says anyone can participate, “from your brother to your mother, sister-in-law or cousin’s roommate.”McDonald’s says the promotion began Monday and it’s in honor of the return of the McRib on Wednesday, as well as the end of No-Shave November, a month-long challenge where participants are asked to put down their razors and “get hairy" in the name of cancer awareness.No-Shave November is also a nonprofit devoted to fundraising for cancer research, prevention and education. McDonalds is collaborating with the organization and will make a donation to the charity’s cancer initiatives using the profits from McRibs on Wednesday.“Our bearded fans know… facial hair and the McRib just don’t mix—believe me, I’ve tried,” said Vice President of U.S. Communications, David Tovar. “With the nationwide return of the McRib, we’re helping fans enjoy every delectable moment by encouraging them to shave for a chance to win a free McRib. And we’re excited this year to partner with No-Shave November, a charity that knows a thing or two about facial hair.”“We’re thrilled McDonald’s is supporting this important cause, getting both the bearded and the non-bearded involved beyond November simply by purchasing a McRib,” said Senior Executive Director of No-Shave November, Monica Hill. 1771

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Brad Pitt, star of the new space movie "Ad Astra," had a burning question for a real-life astronaut."Who was more believable? Clooney or Pitt?"In a televised call Monday, NASA astronaut Nick Hague answered Pitt — "absolutely" — getting a big laugh. Pitt's Hollywood pal George Clooney starred in the 2013 space film "Gravity."Hague and the rest of the International Space Station crew previewed "Ad Astra" a few weeks ago. The movie opens Friday down here.Pitt portrays an astronaut who travels through the solar system to find his father. The film includes actual NASA shots of the moon and Mars."How'd we do? How was our zero-G?" Pitt asked from NASA headquarters in Washington."I got to tell you, it was really good," said Hague, six months into his own 6 ?-month mission. "The depictions, the settings all as you can tell look very similar to the type of setting I've got around me. I got to imagine it was a lot easier for me to kind of enjoy the zero-G than it was you," he added, flipping in weightlessness.Pitt noted the movie's spaceship was "a bit cleaner" than the station. After asking about spacewalking and seeing Earth from space, Pitt said, "Most important question: Who controls the jam box?" Answer: The astronauts take turns. With three Americans, two Russians and an Italian on board, the music has an "international flare," Hague said. The 20-minute chat ended with Pitt sharing, "I can't wait to brag to my kids."___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education. Cat owners in a small New Zealand village have been given paws for thought after a local council pledged to carry out a ban on the animals.According to a "pest plan" put forward by Environment Southland, cat owners in Omaui, on the country's South Island, will have to neuter, microchip and register their cats with local authorities. The proposal states that when the cat dies, owners will not be allowed to purchase a new one."There's cats getting into the native bush; they're preying on native birds, they're taking insects, they're taking reptiles -- all sorts of things," biosecurity operations manager Ali Meade told the Newshub news service."They're doing quite a bit of damage."The proposal is also being backed by Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust Chairman John Collins, who says removing cats from the area would enable native animals to thrive.''We're not cat haters, but we want our environment to be wildlife-rich," he told the Otago Times.''Native wildlife is disappearing rapidly around the country and places like this where people still live and enjoy and hear the birdsong are probably few and far between,'' Collins said.Submissions on the Southland regional pest management plan close on October 23.New Zealand is currently embarking on an ambitious plan to become predator-free by 2050 with plans to eradicate species of possums, stoats and rats.The-CNN-Wire 1385
