GUANGZHOU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more efforts in improving the country's innovation capabilities to accelerate the transformation of economic growth pattern.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while making an inpsection tour to south China's Guangdong Province from Thursday to Sunday."Indigenous innovation is the way out for an expedited transformation of the economic growth pattern," said Li, who told the local government officials to persist in the transformation of the economic growth pattern as a key element and strategic step in implementing the scientific outlook on development.Li called on the local authorities to make great efforts in expanding the culture sector and get inspriration from doing so to keep improving quality and efficiency of economic development, trying hard to find new ways for China's sound and fast development of economy and society in the post-crisis era after the global financial downturn.Li hoped Guangdong to pay equal emphasis on construction of iconic cultural projects and on building of cultural life at grassroots level. At least 7,093 rescuers were carrying out search and rescue operation in the Gyegu Town, the seat of the Yushu prefecture government, according to previous statements from the headquarters.More rescuers were en route to the town that is close to the epicenter and home to 100,000 residentsThe quake struck the Yushu County in the Yushu prefecture at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday with a depth of about 33 km. The epicenter was calculated to be 33.1 north and 96.7 east, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported.A series of aftershocks have been reported so far, with the biggest being at 6.3 magnitude.The epicenter is at the Rima Village in the Shanglaxiu Township, a pasturing and sparsely-populated area about 50 km west of Gyegu and about 800 km away from the provincial capital Xining.Many people are still buried in the debris as more than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu, mostly made of mudbrick and wood, had collapsed.

CHIFENG, Inner Mongolia, April 10 (Xinhua) -- As a massive drought is plaguing most parts of southwest China, the dry spell is also spreading to many areas of the country's north.More than 250,000 people are short of drinking water in the sparsely populated Chifeng City of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.More than 272,800 cattle also lack drinking water, an official with the municipal water conservancy bureau told Xinhua Saturday.The nine major reservoirs in the city of 90,000 square kiloters in territory just hold 91.75 million cubic meters of water, down 73.7 percent from the same time last year.Adding to the woe, 62 percent of the city's mid- and small-sized reservoirs have dried up, the official said.Major rivers also see a decrease of 77.4 percent in water volume.Even though Chifeng city has suffered from successive years of drought since 1999, this year's has been the gravest in the past decade, the official said.The government has mobilized more than 626,300 people in the drought relief work, with more than 30.33 million yuan (about 4.46 million U.S. dollars) of special-use fund, the official said.
