As a high school student, the gunman in the Dayton, Ohio, massacre had a "hit list" of classmates he wanted to kill or hurt, according to four former students who said they were told by school officials they were on the list.Spencer Brickler said a counselor at Bellbrook High School told him that he and his sister were on Connor Betts' hit list. Brickler said he was riding on a school bus when he saw Betts getting escorted off by officers who were investigating the threats."He was kind of dark and depressive in high school," said Brickler, who recalled the incident occurring about nine years ago when he was a freshman. He said he had no idea what prompted Betts, then a sophomore, to put him or his sister on the list. The information has taken on new significance now that Betts has been identified as the gunman who killed nine people early Sunday morning in a popular nightlife district in downtown Dayton, authorities said. Police officers on patrol nearby immediately responded and killed Betts less than a minute after he opened fire, authorities said.In response to CNN's inquiries about the hit list, Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools Superintendent Douglas A. Cozad said, "At this point, I can confirm that Connor Betts was a student at Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools his entire school career and graduated from Bellbrook High School in 2013."Since he has not been a student here for over six years, we are still gathering additional information and will release it as soon as we can," Cozad said.Another former classmate, who asked not to be identified out of concerns for his privacy, also recalled being summoned to a school administrator's office and being told he was "number one" on the list of students Betts wanted to kill.He said the list was separated into two columns: a "kill list" for boys and a "rape list" for girls.A third person, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told CNN that Betts sent messages about the list to one of his classmates, who told her mother. Her mother then notified the police, who came to the school and interviewed people on the list individually in the school's office."Personally, it freaked me out," said the classmate who was told she was on the list. "I started having panic attacks in the school building."A fourth person, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, said, "All I know is there was a list of violent actions and a list of names including mine."She said some of the names were female students who, like her, turned him down for dates. She said Betts often simulated shooting other students and threatened to kill himself and others on several occasions."He loved to look at you and pretend to shoot with guns, guns with his hands," she said.Another former classmate, who was not on the list, said that he met Betts through a "friend of a friend." He said whenever they hung out, Betts would talk about violence and use harsh language about women, like calling them "sluts." 2985

An arrest has been made after authorities say a driver intentionally rammed another car in Southern California, killing three teenage boys and injuring three others. The California Highway Patrol says the Toyota Prius was hit Sunday night in Temescal Valley, went off the road and slammed into a tree. Three boys died and three had moderate injuries. A witness followed the other car and CHP officers arrested 42-year-old Anurag Chandra of Corona in a neighborhood near the accident scene. He was booked on suspicion of murder with malice. It's unclear whether he has an attorney. 593

At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education. The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun."To celebrate the students' hard work, the school invited a real-life princess who knows sign language to come speak to students this week."We wanted to show our students that this isn't something they can only speak with Morey," said Principal Sampietro, who said most students in their rural Maine school have not encountered many people with hearing impairment. "We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings."Morey's mom said she loves art and performing. So when Cinderella came to sing to the entire elementary, she helped with the singing and the signing, of course. 2067

At a Sunday night vigil honoring the victims of the West Texas mass shooting, Odessa Mayor David Turner praised authorities for ramming into the hijacked mail truck the shooter was driving and putting an end to his killing spree.Seven people were killed and 22 others were wounded when 36-year-old Seth Ator began randomly spraying the roads with bullets after getting pulled over for failing to use his signal, police said."The reason that person was stopped was because of a Midland police officer and an Odessa police officer. They rammed his car, stopped him and when he got out, they shot him," he said.Moving forward will be difficult, Turner said "but with strength and a 'whatever-it-takes' spirit we will show this community, our state and our nation, what it means to be West Texans."The shooter had been fired from his trucking job hours before he began his killing rampage. "Saturday morning, our suspect went to work at Journey Oil Field service. He was there for a short time and was terminated by his employer," said Police Chief Michael Gerke in an update Monday. "Right after that firing, he called 911, Odessa Police Department's 911, and so did his employer. And basically they were complaining on each other because they had a disagreement over the firing."Authorities say they believe he acted alone but have not yet determined a motive. His victims ranged from 15 to 57 years old, Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said, and included Mary Granados, a 29-year-old mail carrier who was on the phone with her twin sister as she neared the end of her shift.A 17-month-old girl and three law enforcement officers were among the injured. He was pulled over for not using his signalThe shooter was pulled over by Texas troopers in Midland Saturday afternoon for failing to use his signal, police said. He began shooting at them with what police described as an AR-type weapon and sped away. He continued firing randomly at residents and motorists, police said.He then hijacked a postal truck and made his way into Odessa, about 20 miles away. That's where police confronted him in a parking lot and killed him.The gunman was slammed by a police vehicle and set spinning into a group of cars, where he was soon encircled by authorities, according to bystander video and Midland County District Attorney Laura Nodolf."Law enforcement at that point had collectively taken efforts to surround him, and he was not going to go anywhere, and he was not going to hurt anybody else," Nodolf said. "That is the definition of heroism, when you have people you know are walking into fire and could be hit, and they were."Investigators are now combing through 15 different crime scenes and multiple cars, FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs said.Combs said his agency responds to Texas frequently, adding the FBI is "here now almost every other week supporting our local and state partners on active shooters."Combs said at this point the agency does not believe there's "any connection to any domestic or international terrorism."The victimsGranados' sister, Rosie, said she heard her sister's scream while they were on the phone together."It was very painful," she said. "I just wanted to help her and I couldn't. I thought she had gotten bit by a dog or something. I tried calling her name and she wouldn't answer."The Ector County school district in Odessa said one of its students was among those killed. The 17-month-old who was injured was airlifted to University medical Center in Lubbock, where she remained in satisfactory condition, hospital officials said. The girl's family said Sunday she is expected to make a full recovery."We hurt so badly for the families whose loved ones didn't survive this tragedy," her parents, Kelby and Garret Davis, said in a joint statement. One wounded law enforcement officer is a trooper from the Department of Public Safety and the other two are from the Midland and Odessa police departments. The trooper is in serious condition and the officers are in stable condition.Number of active shooting incidents increasingMore than 40 people have died in the four shootings across Texas, Ohio and California since July. It's part of a trend the FBI says is getting worse each year."If you look at the numbers, we're looking at an active shooter every other week in this country," Combs said. The agency has conducted a study on all active shooters -- who they define as "an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area" -- between 2000 and 2018 and found the numbers keep increasing."I think it is frustrating for all of us in law enforcement that we keep having to do this," he said, referring to ongoing investigations. "For the FBI in particular, we do them across the country as a service to our state and local partners. It's just getting worse."This latest shooting took place hours after a series of firearms laws that loosen gun restrictions went into effect in Texas. Included in that list are laws which will allow weapons on school grounds, apartments and places of worship.Sunday afternoon, Gov. Greg Abbott commented on the frequency of high-profile shootings in his state since he took office."I have been to too many of these events," Abbott said."I am heartbroken by the crying of the people in the state of Texas. I am tired of the dying of the people of Texas. Too many Texans are in mourning. Too many Texans have lost their lives. The status quo in Texas is unacceptable, and action is needed," he said. 5526
