SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres all-star pitcher Kirby Yates will be out of his comfort zone Sunday night when he and his wife, Ashlee, host a night of stand-up comedy. The event will raise money and awareness for a cause very close to the Yates' heart: Epilepsy.One night in 2018, the couple was asleep when Kirby heard Ashlee begin making strange sounds. It went from that to a seizure. She was pregnant with their second child at the time."It's the first time I'd ever been involved in anything like that," Yates told 10News. "It's hard to see your wife, she's pregnant with our son, and you have feelings that you've never had before.""He was definitely terrified," Ashlee said. "I obviously don't remember it, but I just know he had a very hard time with that."After a myriad of tests, Ashlee was shocked to be diagnosed with epilepsy. "I didn't know it was random and can come at any time or age," she recalls.When searching for ways to cope with the diagnosis, Ashlee turned to one of her favorite things: Stand-up comedy. She had performed at clubs before, but began integrating humor about her condition into her act. "That was actually my outlet. As soon as this happened, that was the first thing I did. I was like, I need to do something drastic to deal with this and I don't know what those options are," Ashlee said. "I like to make people laugh. I like to have fun, so this seemed like a good fit."That led to the decision to host "Comedy for a Cause", which will take place Sunday night at the American Comedy Co. in the Gaslamp. Ashlee will perform with two other well-known San Diego comedians. Kirby and several of the biggest Padres stars will be in the crowd. They also will likely be the biggest targets for the comics' humor, "I know they're big Padres fans, so I'm sure they've been following the season and have some good jokes," Ashlee said. "I did suggest a roast on Kirby.""I told them they can roast me as much as they want and it's fine," Kirby responded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after they say four teenagers were beaten, stabbed and robbed near a City Heights elementary school Saturday night.Police say the four teens were in a skate park near Cherokee Point Elementary School on the 3900 block of Landis Street when they were approached by a group of men.According to police, the man tried to start an argument, so then teens ran to a pedestrian bridge where another group of men was waiting for them.Police say the approximately 15 men punched and kicked all four victims and stole their cell phones and wallets.One of the victims was stabbed in the elbow and another was cut on the finger.One of the victims was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police say. The condition of the victims wasn’t specified.   806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Only 92.5 percent of San Diego County’s kindergartners were up to date on all of their vaccinations during the 2018-2019 school year, below the recommended rate.It was a slight .7 decrease from the previous year’s 93.2 percent, according to a report released by the California Department of Public Health. California as a whole also slightly fell below the 95 percent vaccination rate recommended by health experts. “We know that there are individuals that don’t believe in vaccinations and people that homeschool their kids, that’s a population,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Wooten says the drop shouldn’t cause panic, but should make families more aware of the importance of vaccinating their children. She said the county is doing its part by responding in three different ways: policies, practices and programs. That includes legislation like the state ban on personal belief exemptions and also CDC recommendations. Wooten says the most important thing is to make sure all parents are aware of the age appropriate vaccines that not only their children, but all family members should have. Wooten says education is key to avoid the risk of contracting and spreading serious illnesses, like the highly contagious measles outbreak across the United States. She said the county has been doing community outreach about the importance of being vaccinated, especially as more people travel overseas during the summer months.“If an individual with measles is put into a room with ten other individuals, 9 out of 10 individuals will contract the illness, it is that contagious,” said Wooten. “It’s very important that all individuals, children, adults, as well as our seniors get the age appropriate vaccinations.” 1791

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Police are looking for the person suspected of using an incendiary device to intentionally start a fire at a San Diego police substation in Logan Heights.At around 11:15 p.m. Monday, officers responded to reports of a fire in the rear parking lot of the Central Division substation in the 2500 block of Commercial Street.Responding firefighters put out the fire before it caused serious damage. No injuries were reported.The Metro Arson Strike Team was called in to investigate the incident after it was determined the fire was sparked by some sort of explosive.Police are viewing trolley security camera footage as part of their search for the suspected arsonist responsible for the blaze. 717

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New information from the Census Bureau shows that San Diego’s housing growth isn’t keeping up with our growth in population.Within the year spanning between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, San Diego saw its population increase by nearly 13,000 people.According to the Census Bureau, though the population has increased, the number of new homes being built is actually slowing down.When you compare housing growth between 2000 and 2007 and housing growth between 2010 and 2017, San Diego County saw a major decrease in growth of new housing. San Diego was also ranked the 11th most populated city in the United States, according to the new data.
