SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Tuesday released video of a deadly officer-involved shooting in El Cerrito. The body camera footage is being released within 45 days of the incident as part of Assembly Bill 748. The video shows the moment 52-year-old Dennis Carolino was shot by an officer. According to police, Carolino’s aunt called police the night of August 24 to report that he hit her in the head with a brick. The 70-year-old woman told police Carolino had psychiatric issues. RELATED: Man dies following officer-involved shooting in El CerritoPolice requested the assistance of the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) and responded to the home in the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue, where officers encountered Carolino in the backyard.“As the officers entered the backyard area to determine the location of the man, he quickly emerged from an outbuilding, holding a shovel. The officers gave the man verbal commands to drop the shovel. One of the officers drew his Taser at that point. The man did not cooperate with the officers’ commands and began to rapidly advance on the officers as he swung the shovel. One officer fired the Taser, which did not have any effect on him. The man continued to advance, prompting the other officer to fire his service weapon,” San Diego Police said in a statement.San Diego Police say three seconds passed from the time Carolino left the outbuilding to the time he was shot. Officers provided aid to Carolino until paramedics arrived, but he died shortly after. Officer Jose Mendez, a 16-year veteran of the department, fired his Taser, SDPD said. The officer who fired his service weapon was identified as Officer Brad Keyes, a four-year veteran of the department. 1717
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police released a sketch Thursday depicting the suspect of a sexual assault at Black's Beach near La Jolla Shores this week.San Diego Police say the female victim was jogging on the beach Wednesday when she was sexually assaulted. The suspect slapped the woman's buttocks twice and grabbed her in the genital area before she broke free and called for help.Officers responded by did not find the man. The suspect is described as a Black man between 30 and 40 years old, with short to no hair and an earring in one ear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of four teenagers accused of fatally beating a man near Petco Park was charged Tuesday with murder and torture.San Diego Police said Dominick Wells, 19, and three juvenile females aged 14, 15 and 17 attacked Edward Starland near a bridge behind the ballpark the afternoon of Nov. 18.Witnesses said Starland had been fighting with the group before he was thrown to the ground and beaten. The group ran off down Imperial Avenue. Starland’s sister Catherine flew to San Diego from Florida to be by his side when he was on life support in the hospital. She said her brother had a heart condition and a pacemaker, and didn’t know why anyone would attack him."I came here for my brother because I don't want him to be alone. I want him to know I'm by his side; when he wakes up he knows I'm here,” she said. Starland, 56, died of his injuries Dec. 3.Police later arrested the teens. Wells is currently being held on a first-degree murder charge at San Diego Central Jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for additional victims after arresting a man they say tried to drag a 17-year-old girl to his car in North Park in late May. According to police, the attempted kidnapping happened around 7:15 a.m. on the corner of 30th Street and El Cajon Boulevard May 31. Police say Thomas Luis Salas, 38, approached the 17-year-old at a bus stop before making casual conversation. He then extended his hand for a handshake and, when the juvenile shook his hand, police say Salas tried to grab her arm and pull her toward his light blue 2011 Ford Escape. The 17-year-old fought back and was able to get away. Investigators were able to track down and identify Salas as the suspect in the case. He was arrested on attempted kidnapping charges. His bail is set at 0,000. Police are asking additional victims to come forward. Salas is a Hispanic man five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He was unshaven with a goatee. Police say Salas’ eyes have a “sleepy” appearance. He also has a large tattoo on his right arm of a cartoon face inside a “sunburst” or “Flame” design. According to police, Salas may have approached other juvenile women with his phone out attempting to engage in conversation.
