BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met here with delegates from South Asian countries Thursday, calling on the broadcast institutions in China and South Asia to forge further cooperation.    ; Exchanges among broadcast institutions are a very important component of cooperation between China and South Asian countries, said Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, during a meeting with the delegates who were here to attend a China-South Asia forum on radio and television.     Li said media interactions are necessary to increase mutual understanding and boost common development between the countries.     The forum was attended by delegates from China and seven membercountries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation,or SAARC. They shared their thoughts and views on the cooperation and development of media.     The theme of the forum was "Strengthening exchange and cooperation, Promoting common development. More than 30 high-ranking officials from government bodies and senior management personnel from broadcasting organizations in SAARC member countries attended the forum.

JINAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has encouraged domestic enterprises to make breakthroughs in science and technology development to weather the global financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during his inspection tour in east China's Shandong Province from Saturday to Sunday. It had been the Premier's fourth consecutive weekend inspection tour outside Beijing this month. Wen said the government would continue the current proactive fiscal policy and moderately ease monetary policy and take it a top task to keep a steady economic growth.     In JinJing Group, China's first glass-manufacturing company with a history of 105 years, Wen was pleased to see the company had gained steady sales increase with its independently-developed new products amid the global downturn. Wen Jiabao made an inspection tour in Shandong from June 27 to June 28    Wen said that technological breakthroughs were fundamental and long-term solutions which should be relied on to fight against the economic downturn.     He urged the enterprises in Shandong to provide better environment for young talent to contribute their ability and wisdom to technology development.     When inspecting Jigang Group, Wen asked the steelmaker to improve its products' competitiveness by carrying out technological innovation, cutting manufacturing cost and developing energy-efficient products.     Wen also visited privately owned Shandong Weiqiao Textile Company, the largest cotton textile enterprise in Asia with more than 150,000 employees.     He said China's textile industry, which was strongly affected by export market, had encountered many difficulties caused by the global financial crisis.     Wen urged efforts to create an environment of fair competition and fight against monopoly to facilitate the development of private companies.     "It is a must to attach importance to the development of private businesses and private fund investment in an effort to deal with the financial crisis and boost economic growth," he said.     Wen said coping with the financial crisis and overcoming difficulties in economic development both serve the purpose of improving people's livelihood and better development of individuals.     Only when people's lives are improved and secured, will the economic development have a true meaning, Wen said.

MILAN, Italy, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Tuesday that China and Italy should explore new areas of cooperation as they face major opportunities in addressing the grim challenges of the international financial crisis.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.He arrived in Milan on Monday evening for an official goodwill visit. Wu met with Roberto Formiconi, president of Lombard Region of Italy on Tuesday.     During the meeting, Wu said as one of the most economically vigorous regions in Italy, the Lombard Region is leading the country in carrying out cooperation with China. It has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai on staging the World Expo.     Wu hopes that the two sides could utilize this platform to expand exchanges and cooperation so as to add new vigor to China-Italy relations.     Formiconi expressed the willingness to actively participate in the Shanghai World Expo, which he regards as an important area of cooperation between the two sides. HONG KONG, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the sole Renminbi (RMB) clearing bank in Hong Kong, announced here Saturday that it will launch RMB clearing services for trade settlement starting from Monday.     BOCHK said it had singed a clearing agreement with the People's Bank of China in relation to RMB business, and will invite banks and other financial institutions participating in trade settlement to sign a new clearing and settlement agreement.     On Wednesday, the People's Bank of China and other departments on the mainland jointly announced the "Administrative Rules on Pilot Program of Renminbi Settlement of Cross-Border Trade Transactions", allowing RMB settlement of cross-border trade transactions for the first time.     "The initiation of the Pilot Program is of particular significance. It will increase the source channels and the usage of RMB funds," said He Guangbei, vice chairman and chief executive of BOCHK.     Under the Pilot Program, enterprises will also have greater flexibility in selecting the settlement currency of cross-border trade transactions as well as increasing their capability to hedge exchange risk, minimize costs, and boost the efficiency and profitability of cross-border trade transactions, he said.     BOCHK, as a participating bank of RMB business, will take the lead in launching a wide spectrum of RMB trade settlement and finance services for its corporate customers to conduct RMB- denominated trade transactions such as remittances, collections and L/C services between Hong Kong and Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai, said the vice chairman.

ROME, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano here on Thursday afternoon, and the two leaders exchanged views on how to address the current global financial crisis.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top Chinese legislature, said China is positive about the results of the London G20 summit and appreciates the efficient efforts that Italy has made in preparation for the dialogue meeting between the leaders of G20 countries and five major developing countries (8+5 dialogue). He said China supports the integration process of the European Union, adding that the EU should play an active role in regional and international affairs.     Wu said China places great importance on developing relations with the EU. He expressed the wish to deepen practical cooperation in all fields and expand trade and investment. He said the two sides should carry out dialogues and communication on major issues on the basis of mutual respect of sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.     Napolitano said as an important member of the EU, Italy is ready to play a constructive role in the regional bloc and help push for a healthy, stable development of EU-China relations.     Napolitano said China's development will not only benefit the Chinese people, but also contribute to peace and development of the world.     Wu said that China is still a developing country, with its per capita GDP ranking below 100th place in the world. He said China will continue to focus on development by working on economic restructuring and industry upgrading. China has adopted composite measures to address both current difficulties and long-term need so as to achieve all-round, balanced and sustainable development.     Wu is on an official goodwill visit to Italy.
