SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service is handling nearly 16 billion deliveries this holiday season, a record number.Warren Burton, a program manager at the USPS, says it is a 12 percent increase from last year.“There’s a lot of online shopping,” he said, “a lot more than last year.” As a result, the USPS processing and distribution center at Carmel Mountain Ranch in San Diego added more seasonal workers. About 1,100 people are working around the clock up from the normal staffing of close to 900.“We gear up all year for this time of the year, we know it’s going to be non-stop, high volume-high demand,” Burton added.The White House declared Christmas Eve a federal holiday this year, but Burton says that USPS will remain open on Christmas Eve.“We greatly appreciate the gesture, but we’re going to keep working so we can keep the mail going,” Burton said.He says Dec. 20 is the last day to mail out a package or holiday card to make sure it is delivered by Christmas Day using regular shipping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Padres made another trade on Monday, this time acquiring relief pitcher Taylor Williams from the Seattle Mariners just before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.MLB.com Padres beat writer AJ Cassavell confirmed the Friars picked up the 29-year-old Williams in exchange for a player to be named later.Williams has a 1-1 record on the season with a 5.93 ERA and six saves.Ironically, Williams was the losing pitcher in the Padres’ wild comeback win over the Mariners on Aug. 27. In that game, with Seattle up 7-3, Williams got two quick outs before giving up four runs to blow the save. San Diego won the game 10-7 on Wil Myers’ walkoff three-run home run off Dan Altavilla, who the Padres acquired on Sunday.The trade for Williams caps a very busy weekend for Padres General Manager A.J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer called on Governor Gavin Newsom to issue guidance that would allow San Diego's hotel industry to resume hosting business meetings and conferences."It's incredibly important for the jobs that this industry represents and the bottom line of dollars to our city," Faulconer said.San Diego tourism officials tell ABC 10News that the industry has lost an estimated billion due to the pandemic thus far. About 22% of out-of-town visitors to San Diego typically come for business meetings or conferences. The loss of this business has led to the loss of more than 50,000 local hospitality jobs.Thursday, Faulconer visited the Manchester Grand Hyatt to review the safety protocols they would put into place for business travelers. That includes plexiglass dividers, hand sanitizing stations, outdoor meeting spaces, and socially distanced seating."Seeing is believing," Faulconer said. "When you can see firsthand the remarkable precautions that our hotel industry has taken, the remarkable job that they have done with leisure travel, we can host business travel safely.”Faulconer points out that California is the only state in the country that bans hotels from hosting businesses.ABC 10News reached out to the California Department of Public Health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego county Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died following what was believed to be a fight at Pala Casino early Saturday morning.According to the department, the man was taken to the hospital by ambulance from the 4700 block of Highway 76. He was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m.After an initial investigation, the department believes he was in a fight with another man in the parking lot of Pala Casino around 6:30 a.m.The department’s homicide unit is investigating, but at this time, no further details or identities of the victim or suspect have been released. 621

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department saved a baby hummingbird found injured near a fire station, the department tweeted Sunday. According to the tweet, the hummingbird was found at the base of a tree in the parking lot of station 9. The department says the bird was unable to fly due to its injuries. “After some firefighter TLC and lots of sugar water, it was able to fly back to its mother. A great save,” the department said.
