BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China proposed on Monday to advance its economic and trade relations with France to a new level by taking the opportunities that may emerge when tackling global challenges including the financial crisis and climate change.     Premier Wen Jiabao made the remarks when meeting with visiting French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, who witnessed an unveiling ceremony of the biggest new energy joint venture between the two countries Monday morning. DATONG, Shanxi, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called for renovating the hovels in urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines across the country to better the livelihood of needy people.     Renovation of all squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories and mines should be completed in the next fives years. Those hovels at state-owned forest zones, reclamation areas and coal mines will be renovated within three years, Li told a national meeting.     Different kinds of government funds will be used in the renovation work, and private investment will be encouraged, Li said, adding that favorable tax and land policies will be implemented.     He said the renovation efforts should be open and transparent and respect the wishes of the broad masses. Efforts should be made to avoid corruption.     Li said China will promote the building of low-rent houses to meet people's basic needs for housing.     By the end of 2008, China has 11.48 million families living in hovels, 7.44 million of which live in cities, 2.38 million nearby state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to an EU statement which denounced the execution of two Tibetans convicted of murder in last year's Lhasa riot.     The Swedish EU presidency released a statement Thursday, denouncing the recent death penalty handed down to two Tibetans involved in the Lhasa riot and asking China to abolish the capital sentences.     "We are strongly dissatisfied with and firmly oppose the EU statement," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a news release.     The Lhasa violence involving beating, smashing, looting and burning in 2008 was a sabotage activity "premeditated, organized and masterminded" by the ** Lama group, who instigated Tibetan separatists in and out of China to fuel up the incident, Ma said.     China's legal institutions have carried out fair and open trials and brought only the culprits of the criminal activities to justice, he said. "This was China's internal affair and judicial sovereignty which allows no other country to interfere with."     China asks the EU to abide by the principles of equality and mutual respect and not to send any misleading signals to Tibetan separatists, so as to ensure sound and stable development of EU-China relations, Ma said.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China and the United States should make joint efforts to push forward cooperation on clean energy and climate change in a substantial way.     Wen said such cooperation is important work and in the interests of both countries and the world. He said the two countries should advance cooperation in this area to bring benefit to the human beings and future generations.     Wen made the remarks when meeting with participants of the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation that began in Beijing Wednesday. The forum will last to Friday.     The forum was co-sponsored by the Chinese think tank China Institute of Strategy and Management and the Brookings Institution of the United States. Participants include Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and high-ranking officials from both governments. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Friday that China hopes to advance the strategic cooperative partnership with the Republic of Korea (ROK).     "We will work with the ROK to increase friendly exchanges at various levels and enhance pragmatic cooperation in various sectors," Hu told Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the ROK National Assembly.     Hailing the smooth development of China-ROK ties in recent years, Hu said the leaders of the two nations had maintained frequent contacts, exchanged views often and reached broad consensus on important issues.     "This gives strong impetus to the growth of bilateral relations," Hu noted.
