JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - The Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul will break ground Wednesday on a new tasting room and wine cave, adding to their expanding vineyard and winery in the East County."We've been waiting for this for quite a while," says Tasting Room Manager Miriam Valdez. "I"m over the moon that it's finally happening."The multi-million dollar expansion will help Granite Lion deal with the increase of customers they've seen over the past year. Sommelier David Whited says they've gone from about ten visitors each week to 150.It's an excellent problem to have, and one that is spreading up and down Highway 94. There are now six wineries between Jamul and Campo, forming their own East County Wine Region.RELATED: New tasting room highlights wineries along Highway 94"You don't have to go all the way to Temecula or Escondido," says Whited. "You can do it here, 20 minutes from downtown."The new wine cave and tasting room are the latest sign that the region is gaining in popularity. The first tasting room in the area opened in 2014. Since then, wines along the 94 have won several awards and are starting to pull customers away from Temecula, Ramona and even Baja."As word gets out, people are coming here," says Whited."You arrive, and it's quiet," says Valdez. "It's away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city. You can enjoy nature. You can find a place here to rejuvenate and relax."The San Diego County Vinters Association says there are 116 wineries across the county. A recent report showed they have a million economic impact every year.Whited says the geography in the East County allows vineyards to grow more flavorful grapes commonly found in Europe."There are two mountain ranges that filter in the marine climate into the valley here which sets us apart from anywhere else in San Diego," he says.County Supervisor Diane Jacob is expected to attend Wednesday's event. JAMUL, Calif., (KGTV) — Nearly 200 volunteers helped to beautify an injured Navy Veteran’s new home in Jamul. “I stepped on one of the IEDs, and that’s when I got blown up,” Petty Officer Christopher Andrieu told 10News.He joined the Navy in 2007, and for his entire service, he has worked as an EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) officer. But in 2013, when he and SEAL Team 5 were in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, he sustained a life-changing injury. Since then, even little things have become arduous tasks for the double amputee. “To get the dishes down, I jump up on the counter if I’m not on my legs,” he chuckled. Andrieu and his family now live in a small house in Claremont. But thanks to non-profit, Homes for Our Troops, he will soon be moving up the hill to much larger home in Jamul. “It was my top choices for a lot, so I was really happy we got this,” Andrieu said. The lot has a beautiful view of the small town and has a spacious half acre front yard. The home is not finished yet but has appliances and shelves built slightly lower to accommodate Andrieu. It has been two years since Andrieu started the application process with Homes for Our Troops. One of the last big projects was the landscaping. That’s where the volunteers came in. “It’s really cool to support who we want to be,” volunteer, Alex Kulik said. Kulik is a senior at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, hoping to become an EOD expert. He and nine other Midshipmen doing summer training in San Diego volunteered to help the non-profit with the project. “I don’t think any of us has experienced what he has, and just to see his optimism, I think it should be able to push anyone,” Kulik said. “Military or non-military, to get through whatever their challenge may be, and come out with a smile in the end.“Andrieu’s heroism and positivity drove the hundreds of volunteers to create a luxurious yard in just 55 minutes."It's a life-changing moment for a deserving veteran," Community Outreach Coordinator for Homes for Our Troops, Mell Barbosa, said. “All the people who came out, I'd say most of them, I didn’t know beforehand,” Andrieu said. “I can’t even say it… it’s just awesome.”Homes for our Troops is sprinting to the finish line. Jenna Ellis, a senior legal advisor for the Trump campaign, has reportedly contracted the coronavirus, according to multiple sources.Ellis has been traveling with President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani as the campaign challenges election results, unsuccessfully, in various states.Giuliani is currently in the hospital being treated for COVID-19.Ellis attended a White House Christmas party on Friday with senior staff, according to Axios. KERNVILLE, Calif. About 45 miles to the west of the quake's epicenter, San Diegan Jose Blanco was watching television on the couch in his parents' home. His three children were playing outside."Banging, jolting, up and down ... eyes were shaking. Just seemed surreal," said Blanco.Blanco says he jumped off the couch and then froze, trying to wait out the shaking."Wow, is this really happening? Just shocked ... Seemed like a good minute. Seemed like forever," said Blanco.When the home finally stopped moving, Blanco ran to his children and found them safe. A few things fell and a few cabinet doors opened, but there was no major damage. In the first few hours after the quake, he felt more than 10 aftershocks. He and his family may not get much sleep."Wondering if there's going to be more, if it's going to keep going," said Blanco.Getting back to San Diego is another concern. Joe Biden’s campaign says the Democratic presidential nominee tested negative for coronavirus Sunday.The results come five days after Biden spent more than 90 minutes on the debate stage with President Donald Trump.
