SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31. 943
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Lifeguards are working to rescue a man stuck on a rock near Border Field State Park Monday afternoon. Lifeguards say they received a call from Border Patrol before noon Monday about a man stuck in the middle of an estuary bear the park. San Diego and Imperial Beach lifeguards as well as the Coastguard is helping with the rescue. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. 421
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Major developments came late Tuesday to create countywide policy changes related to policing reforms. After several hours of testimony and public comments, all three parts of a policy package were voted on and passed by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors during a special meeting.It was introduced by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher who said it was designed to create more transparency and to start to change systemic and structural racism that has caused pain and harm to generations of African American people.The three proposals that passed include launching mobile crisis response teams made of social workers and clinicians instead of law enforcement for some mental health and homeless services and emergency calls, increasing independence and strengthening oversight of the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board and establishing an Office of Equity and Racial Justice.ABC10 News listened in as callers weighed in on both sides of the debate over the creation of an Office of Equity and Racial Justice. Many callers were in favor of its creation. Others argued that the County should consider a bolstered version brought forth by civil rights activist Rev. Shane Harris who recommended that the County increase the number of staffers assigned to the Office and increase its budget to million.The Board of Supervisors decided that the passed proposal for the Office of Equity and Racial Justice will need to be reviewed by an independent consultant and the Human Relations Commission will need to provide guidance on the Office’s mission.Late Tuesday, the Office of Supervisor Nathan Fletcher sent ABC10 News the following statement:“The Board of Supervisors today voted to support the entire Racial Justice and Law Enforcement Realignment Policy Package authored by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and crafted in partnership with respected leaders from the Black community. The group released the following statement after the vote:‘The community called for change, and today’s action is a step forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building.The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally moved workers in, only to vacate them a month later when the county detected traces of asbestos.The building was purchased by the city in 2016 in an approved lease-to-own agreement valued at million.RELATED: City leaders vote for updates on 101 Ash Street as costs mountLast month, a letter obtained by ABC 10News showed the city was considering proposals for additional services including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely.
