is warning people about the red flags.Chelsea Earley almost fell for what she thinks is a scam after she read an email that popped up in her school inbox."Yeah because I was like 'oh it’s a job placement in student services, maybe it’s legit,' ” she said.It was enticing her with a 0 weekly paycheck if she kept up with their instructions. She put in her phone number and address and a week later she got a package in the mail. They opened it and found a check for ,355, plus detailed instructions that told her to deposit the check and then within 24 hours, buy two 0 Walmart gift cards, scratch off the back, take a picture and send it in so they can get their money back."I was like who is sending you a ,300 check? That’s insane. You’re 19 years old,” said Christy Bidgood, Earley’s mom.Her age falls in line with research from the Federal Trade Commission that say the highest number of fake check scam victims are people in their 20s because they don’t understand how checks work. The BBB says it can take a week or two for a check to bounce, yet banks typically release the money into the account sooner than that."Yeah I do have a lack of knowledge about checks so I think people that don’t understand checks, they are definitely going to fall for it,” Earley said. The BBB says be wary of a company that overpays an employee and then asks them for money to be wired elsewhere. They say no legitimate business would do this. The BBB doesn’t have record of the company’s business profile in their system, but they say at least seven other people have reported concerns through their 1598
in Lake Erie on Tuesday.Authorities said the jet ski appeared to be anchored with two people fishing. No state registration number visible on the watercraft. When approached, the people on the jet ski told an Air and Marine Operations (AMOP) and a Border Patrols agent that they were from Mexico and did not have immigration documents.AMOP transported the two back to shore and handed them off to Border Patrol agents. Border Patrol then took the pair to the United States Border Patrol Sandusky Bay Station for further identification.“During the summer months Lake Erie is one of the busiest boating communities in the nation,” said Brian Manaher, Deputy Director Marine Operations, Great Lakes Air and Marine Branch. “This case is a testament to our highly skilled law enforcement ability to differentiate between legitimate boat traffic and nefarious traffic.”At the Border Patrol station, one of the people was identified as a valid DACA recipient and released to his jet ski.The other man was identified as an undocumented immigrant with a warrant of deportation issued on Oct. 2, 2012.The man and his property were turned over to ICE, where he will be held pending his removal. This story was originally published by Courtney Shaw on 1240
With the CDC's recommendation that Americans not travel to see family members for Thanksgiving next week, many won't be able to see their relatives this holiday season. However, doctors say it's as important as ever to keep in touch with elderly relatives. One easy way to stay in touch with older relatives is through video chat. And while elderly family members may not have much experience with it, Dr. Donald Mack says seniors have been more willing to try new technologies amid the pandemic."Most of them have really bought into the importance of staying safe, and they're willing to try this new technology," said Mack, a geriatrician at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center. "I used to think some of them would just say no."It's totally normal to have hiccups. Mack says it's all about having patience and giving family members a hand.If a loved one has a caregiver, see if they are able to help set up the calls. Once that happens, take a look at the environment your loved one finds themselves in."If the senior is able to do that safely is say, 'Hey can you show me how you can get out of that chair and get something across the room?' Or, 'show me how your plants are doing,'" Mack said. "Sometimes, you can check in on them, and also check in on their function that way, too."Mack says callers should also check in on their loved ones' grooming — something they wouldn't otherwise be able to see in a regular phone call.Doctors even say seniors might be willing to have difficult conversations over video chat, as long as their cognitive health is OK.Callers can also talk about what their loved ones need and set up services like grocery and medicine delivery if they're in another city.If video chatting becomes too much of an obstacle, doctors say it's still OK to resort to a regular phone call. They say the most important thing is to stay in touch. 1871
