SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic has brought the historic Balboa Park Carousel to a halt. Still, it hasn't halted plans to upgrade the 100-year old attraction."We did make lemonade out of lemons here," says John Bolthouse, the Executive Director of the Friends of Balboa Park.The group started a capital campaign fundraiser three years ago, hoping to raise million to overhaul the carousel. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, they saw an opportunity in the closure."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says. "People stepped up, and they saw that there was a need and an opportunity to get these things done."A fundraising push brought in 0,000 in 30 days, bringing the total amount raised to .4 million. With the extra cash on hand, the Friends of Balboa Park accelerated the schedule for remaking the ride.They've repainted several of the animals, restoring them to the original design. The group also rewired the entire carousel lighting system. That included changing over every bulb to safer energy-efficient LED bulbs.It also allowed them to bring back some light fixtures that had been removed for safety reasons."100 years ago carousels were burning down due to electrical fires," says Manager Bill Brown. "It's going to be a huge improvement. I think people are going to notice when we reopen."Brown hired a contractor to help with big projects. He also has a team of four people who help work on the carousel every Tuesday.One of the animals that Brown just finished painting is a Golden Retriever, which has a special meaning to one of the donors."We named the dog Goldie George," says Julie Cowan Novak. "Goldie in honor of my three-year-old granddaughter and George in honor of my hundred-year-old uncle."Cowan Novak's family donated ,000 to adopt the animal. She says seeing the work continue has been a silver lining to the Pandemic."I think the carousel is really a balance for what we've all gone through," says Cowan Novak. "It's just sort of a bright light."The Pandemic has also brought some challenges to the ride.The Friends of Balboa Park had to furlough most of their staff from the loss of ride revenue. They've also put bigger plans to revamp the carousel plaza on hold.Bolthouse also says he doesn't know when they'll be able to reopen. Like other theme parks and ride operators, the carousel is still waiting on the state and county to release guidelines for reopening.But, when they get the green light, they plan to have as much of the restoration work as possible finished."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The memories came flooding back for Vietnam veteran Ray Hildreth as he returned to Camp Pendleton 50 years later. He wanted to tour his old unit, the 1st Recon Battalion."Looking at the mountains, I remember having to run up and down them!"And while the current 1st Recon Battalion Marines may not recognize Hildreth, they know his story. In June of 1966, Hildreth's unit was stationed on Hill 488 in the jungles of Vietnam. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the U.S. military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, thirteen Silver Stars, and eighteen Purple Hearts—some of them posthumously.There were just 18 of them when they encountered the enemy, a battalion of over 200. "Early on in the battle, and all the Marines here can identify with this, the NVA yelled out 'Marines you die in an hour,' and we had some colorful words to say back to them, and said, come and get us," remembers Hildreth.The late Staff Sergeant Jimmie Howard served as platoon leader with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and led the defense of Hill 488 when attacked by the North Vietnamese.Howard had combat experience from Korea, and Hildreth credits the leader with keeping them alive. "Sergeant Howard said, 'Laugh at them!' And we did, we laughed out loud at them. Later I went back to Vietnam, 2011. I met one of the NVA we fought against. I asked him, what did you think when we laughed at you? He said we thought you were a much bigger unit. And it was that laugh, I'm sure of, that made them not just try to walk over the top of the hilltop and take us," said Hildreth. When they were out of grenades, the men began throwing rocks. "If we hadn't laughed at them, by sheer numbers, they could've walked across the top of the hill and killed us. At the end of the day, there were maybe eight rounds of ammunition left between us."The unit killed an estimated 200 people.Of the 18, all were wounded, and six died. Hildreth wrote a book about the battle, titled Hill 488."I thought people needed to know about the battle, not everyone went over there took drugs and smoked pot," said Hildreth. "We went over there with a different outlook, we're supposed to be here, there's a reason for it, and we done our job. The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping.This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Medical Board of California has filed an accusation and petition to revoke the probation of a Del Mar doctor who is accused of prowling in a former girlfriend’s backyard.10News first broke the story about Dr. Jeffrey Lovin in May after we were given home security video showing a man lurking behind a home. An ex-girlfriend said the man in the video was Dr. Lovin, a radiologist. Lovin was charged with prowling, peeking and violating a restraining order. He pleaded not guilty.At the time, Lovin was already on probation with the Medical Board for other criminal activity. This month, the Board issued an accusation and petition to revoke his probation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166
