CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Sweetwater Union High School District Monday handed out dozens of pink slips to administrators as the district deals with a million budget shortfall for the next school year. The board agreed during a meeting in Chula Vista Saturday to release up to 87 employees. Not every employee who receives a pink slip will lose their job. In a written statement, the district said the employees “may be released or reassigned from their position.” Community forums on the matter will be held at the end of the month. In September 2018, the district noticed a million dollar budget shortfall. An independent audit revealed the district was borrowing money faster than it could pay back. This fiscal year alone, the district will borrow million, in addition to the million it already owes; the money coming from Mello-Roos taxes. In December, the San Diego County Office of Education appointed a fiscal advisor with power to stay and rescind any financial decision made by the troubled district. Since voters approved commercial cannabis operations in 2018, we have been working to establish a quality program that attracts businesses like Grasshopper that are committed to running top-notch operations in our community.”Measure Q, an initiative approved by voters in 2018, allows for “commercial cannabis retail, delivery, testing, cultivation and manufacturing” in Chula Vista.Under Measure Q, the city said: “A total of 12 cannabis retail operations are allowed in the City of Chula Vista. Each council district may have a maximum of three retail locations to include two storefront locations or a combination of storefront and delivery operations, not to exceed three per council district.Grasshopper Delivery is Chula Vista owned and operated. (KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice.As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said.The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. These kids are good student with no absences.
