BEIJING - China expressed grave concern over Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao on Monday."Kosovo's unilateral act can produce a series of results that will lead to seriously negative influence on peace and stability in the Balkan region and on the realization of building a multi-ethnic society in Kosovo, which China is deeply concerned about," said Liu.He said the settlement of the Kosovo issue concerns the peace and stability in the Balkan region, the basic norms governing international relations and the authority and role of the United Nations Security Council. He added that China has always held that the best way to resolve the Kosovo issue is that Serbia and Kosovo reach a plan acceptable for both sides through negotiation."China calls on the two sides of Serbia and Kosovo to continue to seek a proper solution through negotiation within the framework of international law, and the international community should create favorable conditions for this," said Liu.Kosovo's parliament voted Sunday to adopt a declaration of independence at an extraordinary session on its independence from Serbia.Kosovo now is "an independent, sovereign and democratic state," Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi announced after lawmakers voted 109-0 through a show of hands to approve the declaration. But Serbian President Boris Tadic said that Serbia will never recognize the independence of Kosovo. He urged international organizations "to immediately annul this act, which violates the basic principles of international law."Kosovo was a southern autonomous province within Serbia before the breakup of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Among its population of 2 million, over 90 percent are ethnic Albanians and Serbs make up about 7 percent.Kosovo has been under UN administration since mid-1999, after NATO air-strikes drove out Serbian forces from the province.

Foreign investors are eyeing more opportunities as China's demand for oil refining and petrochemicals increases. According to a think-tank affiliated to China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), China's oil demand will hit 455 million tons while the country's total refining capacity will surpass 400 million tons by the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan period, set from 2006 to 2010. "From this year to 2010, the average annual oil demand of China will grow at 6.5 percent per year. One forecast shows demand reaching 455 million tons in 2010," Gong Jinshuang, a veteran researcher at the Economic and Technology Research Institute of CNPC, China's largest oil and gas producer, said on Friday. According to a national industrial deployment plan, there will be many refineries and ethylene crackers on stream by 2010 and China will witness 18 million tons of ethylene produced by 2010. The country's refineries will run at 90 to 95 percent capacity by 2010, Gong said. Ethylene output of China was 9.41 million tons last year, up 24.5 percent year-on-year. To seize opportunities arising from the downstream sector of the oil industry, not only State-owned giants, but also foreign investors are gearing for more investment. Mustafa Al-Sahan, general manager in charge of China investment at Sabic Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, told China Daily that his firm plans to invest billion to set up an integrated refining and petrochemical project in Dalian, Northeast China. The industrial complex is expected to include a 10-million-ton refinery, a one-million-ton ethylene cracker and an 800,000-ton aromatics plant, according to the blueprint. Al-Sahan said the project will be a joint venture formed by several parties, holding equal stakes. So far, there are already two parties involved, Sabic and a private Chinese company. Sabic is looking for another State-owed energy giant to join, Al-Sahan added. The project is still subject to approval by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner. Sabic has invested in a petrochemicals plant in Tianjin, in partnership with Sinopec, Asia's top refiner. The Tianjian project has been given the green light by the NDRC and is expected to be on stream by the fourth quarter of next year, the Sabic chief for the investment in China said. CNPC and Sinopec are either planning or expanding their refining and petrochemical projects, such as in Sichuan, Fujian provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region, to better meet the country's future fuel and industrial demand. China now is the world's fastest growing major oil market Al-Sahan said the downstream segment of the Chinese oil industry has good potential because of the robust future demand. He said Sabic will not produce gasoline, which is oversupplied in the market, but oil and petrochemicals that are in big demand.

SHANGHAI: The children of migrant workers in Shanghai are turning against their hometowns and becoming arrogant, it has been claimed.Kids brought up in Shanghai have a feeling of superiority when they return to their birthplaces, Zhang Yichao, the founder of a chorus group who has been organizing trips for the young migrants to the countryside, said. The 35 chorus group members are aged from 11 to 16, born in rural areas and are growing up in Shanghai. They were making 12-day trips to their hometowns of Anhui, Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces last month.Zhang set up the chorus in February last year with an American. It is the first troupe in Shanghai comprising the children of migrant workers.Following an 18-month training course by voluntary teachers they put on performances at venues such as the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Jinmao Tower, China's second-highest building. On their visits to the countryside the kids held chorus and solo shows, with electric instruments, for the farmers. They also played games with local children and collated information to write reports."Few of these children maintain their affection for their hometowns and they don't like the countryside. I hope these trips will help them remember their early childhood and the rural areas where they were born," Zhang said. For the first few days, he said, the kids kept their distance from farmers, complained about dirty toilets, muddy sidewalks and shabby housing. They even hid the fact they were from rural areas themselves."It's obvious these children liked the feeling of superiority in front of their country fellows," Zhang said."What we can do, however, is help them face up to the fact they were born in rural areas and perhaps then they will be more fond of these places."They are still young and innocent and I believe they will build up a positive life philosophy and make their own contributions to society," chorus volunteer Liu Jing said."Children of migrant workers need more education in all aspects of life. This trip to the countryside is just a small part and we are organizing other activities," Zhang said.

For the first time in 300 years, the renowned Shaolin Temple held a ritual on Thursday to initiate 600 believers into monkhood. On that same day, millions of monks and believers nationwide observed the Buddha bath festival which usually includes the washing of all statues of the Buddha. The ceremony used to be considered an official ritual to recognize a believer into true monkhood. Shi Yongxin, leader of Shaolin Temple and vice- president of the Buddhist Association of China, said that Buddhism in China has embarked on a "golden era" of development with a rapidly increasing number of believers. According to Shi, China has about 100 million registered religious believers, most of whom are Buddhists and Taoists. "They form an indispensable force to construct a harmonious society," he said. Shi said the ritual was suspended for 300 years because the altar where the ritual was held was destroyed. The 26-meter-high three-storey alter was restored last year at the temple, located in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan Province. The 600 Buddhists were selected out of 1,000 pious Buddhists nationwide. Shi said that only Buddhists who have passed a long-term inspection and are believed to have a "pre-destined lot" with Buddhism will be allowed to take the ritual and admitted by the temple. "Only Buddhists who practice Buddhism to a high level can be tonsured and allowed to take the ritual," Shi said. The ritual will last 28 days during which time the 600 monks will listen to doctrines, learn Buddhism rituals and manners in the temple. Both Buddhism and Taoism seem to be attractting more believers. An international forum on the "Daode Jing", a classic of Taoism, was held last month and lured 300 Taoists from around the world who wanted to explore the true essence of the classic text.

There is perhaps no better time to savor the charm of Tian'anmen Square than during the week-long National Day holiday. Two girls pose with small national flags on Tian'anmen Square September 30, 2007, the eve of the week-long National Day holiday. [Xinhua] Stretching in front of the Forbidden City, it is ablaze with the color of 400,000 pots of flowers in full bloom. This year's major events can be seen at the city's center. Looking east are scale models of the Acropolis in Athens, the Great Wall, and a 9.8-meter Olympic torch, which represents the torch relay from Greece to China. To the south can be seen models of the Temple of Heaven and major scenes marking key events in the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to welcome the 17th National Congress of the CPC which starts on October 15.A big fountain sprouts water as high as 60 meters in the middle of the square surrounded by a bed of flowers."The square is always the best place to experience the festive atmosphere of the National Day," Deng Chuanmei, 48, a visitor from Jiangsu Province, said.Wei Liqing, a Beijing resident, said she has taken photos and videos at the square every National Day holiday since 1992. "I want to record the pace and growth of our country," she said.Work on the decorations and flower displays started about 25 days ago, and was carried out at night to avoid disrupting tourists and traffic, Zhou Jianping, an official with the Beijing gardening and forestation bureau, said.He said this year's decorations include 130 kinds of flowers, of which more than 20 will also be on display during the next year's Olympic Games. If weather permits, the flowers will be shown until the end of the month. The national flag raising ceremony will also be a major attraction. At dawn today, an estimated 200,000 people will gather at Tian'anmen Square to watch the event. The capital's tourism administration bureau has predicted that about 1.7 million people will visit the capital during the seven-day holiday.
