SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A person fell at least 14 feet down an elevator shaft at a downtown property Tuesday.The person was reportedly working at the property at 625 Broadway when the fall occurred.San Diego Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue team responded, hoisting the worker out and transporting the person to a nearby hospital.The worker had injuries to their leg but they were conscious and believed to be okay.No further information was immediately available. 476

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man suspected of shooting another man during an altercation on a trolley in downtown San Diego was taken into custody, San Diego police said.At around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the trolley station in the 1200 block of Imperial Avenue after a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg.According to police, the victim was struck by gunfire during in a verbal altercation with another man while both were riding a trolley train. Police said the victim was able to tackle the suspect, and other trolley passengers helped get the gun away from the suspected shooter.The suspected shooter fled the scene following the incident.ABC 10News learned the victim was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive.About 90 minutes after the shooting was reported, officers spotted the man believed to be linked to the incident near Logan Avenue and Beardsley Street and then detained him.The suspect was later identified as 18-year-old Salvador Sanchez Cantero.A motive for the altercation is unclear; the shooting is under investigation. 1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died following a shooting in downtown San Diego Thursday evening, police said.The shooting was reported just after 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and E Street in the Gaslamp Quarter, according to San Diego police.According to police, an altercation broke out between a man and his companion and a third man. Police said during the altercation, the third man produced a handgun and shot one of the men in the upper torso. The suspected shooter and the victim's companion both fled the scene.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, but he later died from his injuries. Police identified him as a 22-year-old Hispanic male.While the victim's companion was found a short distance away, police are still searching for the gunman. The suspected shooter was described as a Black male with braided hair, between 20-40 years of age, and wearing a bandana or rag over his face. He was last seen wearing dark clothing and running on eastbound E Street.Police are interviewing witnesses and viewing surveillance video footage from area businesses as part of the investigation. 1141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A legendary sports radio station is returning to Southern California airwaves with an updated name.The Mighty 1090 abruptly went off the air on April 10, 2019, due to an issue between the station’s parent company and the owners of the Mexico-based radio tower that distributes the station’s signal.But on Monday, Aug. 17, the station once known as the Mighty 1090 will be back on the 1090 AM radio dial as "The Mightier 1090.”Bill Hagen of Mightier 1090 said in a news release, “It’s taken a tireless amount of work from a number of great people to get us to this point. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report by the San Diego Food System Alliance, expected to be released in January, calls for major changes to how food is produced and distributed across the county. The findings suggest that many neighborhoods are disadvantaged by limited access to fresh, healthy food.“Our goal here is to unite people behind cultivating a healthier, more sustainable, and more just food system," said Alliance spokesperson Margaret Chiu.Chiu suggests a significant solution would be less reliance on large corporate food system suppliers, and more access to locally farmed and sourced foods. “We want better grocery stores. we want community gardens or we want access to places where we can grow our own food," Chiu said.She says the whole community benefits when it is easier to turn blighted properties into urban farming or community gardens.The Alliance hopes to work with county and city leaders to make their suggestions into policy. "I’m very hopeful that that will be the case with this study, that we will continue to have the political will to push it forward to make San Diego everything that we say that we are," said San Diego City Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe. 1202
