A special guide dog has reinvigorated Anastasia Pagonis' zest for life and her swimming career.After a devastating diagnosis and the loss of her sight, it was Radar that helped pick her back up.Pagonis started losing her vision when she was 14 years old. Her parents signed her up for swimming and she excelled, but when she lost her sight completely, she didn't want to get back in the pool at all.Things changed once Anastasia received a guide dog from Puppies with a Purpose."Radar is my guide dog. He is honestly the best thing that has happened to me. I'm so happy to have him in my life." Radar has also given Anastasia the confidence to get back in the pool "When I got back in the water and just, like, felt the chlorine on my skin, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I knew that I was going to do anything I could possibly do to get me where I wanted to be. And that's Tokyo 2021." A teacher at a Virginia high school was fired this week for allegedly refusing to stop calling a transgender male student a girl, ABC News reported. The teacher, Peter Vlaming, was reportedly fired for violating the school's nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies. Vlaming was a French teacher at West Point High School in West Point, Va. "After thoughtful deliberation, the School Board voted to support the superintendent’s recommendation," the school's board wrote in a statement. "The School Board has adopted policies and tonight we upheld these policies."Vlaming claimed that his religion prevented him from identifying the boy by his preferred pronoun. Vlaming did agree to use the student's male name. A petition, which has more than 2,000 signatures, was launched in support of Vlaming. Vlaming said in the petition, "I won't use male pronouns with a female student that now identifies as a male though I did agree to use the new masculine name but avoid female pronouns. Administration is requiring that I use masculine pronouns in any and every context at school. I was informed that any further instances of using female pronouns would be grounds for termination." On Friday, students held a walkout and protest at the school in response to Vlaming's firing, WWBT-TV reported. “The school board is trying to force the teacher to conform to their ideologies with the threat of removal from the school,” Forrest Rohde, a junior who organized the walkout, told WWBT. James Millner, the president of Virginia Pride, agreed with the board's decision. "He violated school policy, despite multiple warnings from administrators. We do need statewide policy guidance that protects lgbtq students and prevents situations like this from happening again," he wrote.  1867

A new political ad could be masquerading as an official correction to the sample ballots that hit mailboxes across San Diego.It's the latest swing in the fight over the state's recent 12-cent per gallon gas tax hike.The mailer, sent to two million Californians mail-in voters, is titled "Election Ballot **Correction**" and says the correct title for Proposition 6 should be "Gas Tax Repeal Initiative.”Proposition 6 is on the November ballot to repeal the state's gas tax increase and new vehicle registration fees. The state raised the levies last year to generate billions of dollars in infrastructure projects. Dave McCulloch, communications director for Reform California, which sent out the mailer, says the Attorney General's ballot language does not make that clear. It instead reads that Prop 6 "eliminates certain road repair and transportation funding...repeals a 2017 transportation law's taxes and fees designated for road repairs and public transportation."We sent out this mailer to make sure that everyone in California knows Prop 6 is the gas tax repeal," McCulloch said. "We know that when people discover that Yes on 6 means to repeal the gas tax, they're much more in favor of it because they realize what it is.”The Attorney General's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The mailer instructs voters to keep it with their sample ballot mailed to them. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said ballot language is often contentions. But he noted the gas tax increase has been so heavily covered that most people will associate with Prop 6. He says this mailer reinforces that. "When they get to their ballot on election day, they're not going to see repeal the gas tax," Kousser said. "They're going to see a proposal written legal language that says exactly what this bill does, which is it changes transportation fees and cuts funding for things." That mailer does include disclosures that it's not official and that Reform California paid for it. Still, Catherine hill, a local spokeswoman for the No on 6 campaign, called it deceptive."It's made to look like a registrar of voters piece, so it's made to look official, so it's misleading," she said. The San Diego Association of Governments says more than 200 million dollars in funds from the tax increase have already been awarded to the region. 2399

A Minneapolis pi?ata maker is apologizing for hanging pieces of his work -- pi?atas which look like black people -- from the front porch of his house.The episode caused an uproar in his mostly African-American neighborhood after passersby mistook the pi?atas, which he says he hung up to dry, for a racist display.It all started when Victor Chavarria, owner of Happy Kids pi?atas, was filling an order for a wedding. The customer had requested racially diverse pi?atas that looked like members of their wedding party.So Chavarria got up at 4 a.m. Friday to create the papier-mache pi?atas, then hung them on the front porch of his home in northern Minneapolis to dry.Someone driving by his house that morning snapped a photo of the pi?atas and put it on Twitter.The social post soon brought a stream of threats to Chavarria, and even his wife and two toddlers.  874

A new complaint has been filed against casino owner Steve Wynn.The complaint was filed by a woman identified only as "Jane Doe." According to the complaint, the woman was an employee for The Claude Baruk Salon in 2015 when she began giving manicures and pedicures to Wynn.She says that Wynn would require her to position herself in certain ways during the services that would put her in direct contact with body parts other than his hands or feet. When she would attempt to withdraw, he would become irritated.According to the complaint, Jane Doe went to Claude Baruk and other members of management. She says that Baruk ignored her complaints but she was told by other members of management that it would stop.Jane Doe says she also shared what happened with her coworkers and heard similar stories. The woman says that she feared that she would lose her job if she kept complaining.After the story broke in the Washington Post, the woman says that Wynn visited the salon twice to speak with salon employees.The first time was on Jan. 27. Wynn reportedly requested the employees to be gathered and then asked them to raise their hands if they felt he had ever assaulted them.The second time was on Feb. 1 during a birthday party for a salon employee. Jane Doe says Wynn brought a video crew with him that time and demanded that employees give video statements saying he did nothing wrong.The complaint also says that Wynn is still receiving manicures and pedicures in the salon or in his on-site villa.The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday with the Clark County District Court. Two lawsuits were filed last week by massage therapists who also accused Wynn of inappropriate conduct.Wynn resigned as CEO of Wynn Resorts last month. He is denying all allegations but said that he did not believe he could be an effective company leader.He also resigned as chairman for the Republican National Committee.  1915
