SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone footage recently captured a rare sighting of a blue whale off San Diego's coastline, as it swims right up to a small boat.Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching, says he's already starting to see blue whale sightings off San Diego's coastline this season. In one video he captured, a whale swims up to his boat to investigate before disappearing below the water's surface."This year is looking like much more of a normal year," Biagini said. "I think this is really going to shape up to be a really good blue whale season."He adds that an abundance of krill and pristine conditions are leading to the sightings. Blue whales generally follow where krill are swimming in coastal waters. If there's a high level of krill, the whales will typically spend the entire summer nearby.Blue whale sightings come in spurts, Biagini says, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat for whale watchers.And whale watching could be a safe alternative to sight-seeing this summer, according to Biagini. He says he's currently running private charters, so groups are limited to single household unit sizes and there's enough room for people to space out."These are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet," Biagini said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From Teddy Bears to cereal boxes, the TSA gave an exclusive look at the alarming items used to conceal explosives at the airport. 4.1 million travelers are expected to travel in and out of San Diego this summer, making it busier than ever. “It may seem like a pain on some travel days taking off your shoes dropping them in a bin and separating a laptop in another but it could be saving your life.”If you’ve traveled through an airport, you’re no stranger to the TSA checkpoint. “Our officers need a clear view of the electronic itself making sure circuitry, the electronics inside of it haven’t been tampered with.”It’s not just electronics, but stuffed animals are also used to disguise explosives. “Because they think that our officers would be disarmed because it’s a child item.”From coffee beans to baby formula and peanut butter, TSA has seen it all. “We’re in no way saying every passenger is bringing these types of items but it only takes one and we really need to get it right every single time.” 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From birthdays to barbecues, there have been five community outbreaks linked to private parties at homes.A spokesperson for the County of San Diego said the outbreaks happened just after Easter through mid-June, and 33 people tested positive for COVID-19.Three of the residential outbreaks are still active, while two have expired. The outbreaks at private residences have caused health officials to worry, especially with the 4th of July quickly approaching."People who wanted to get together with friends after a period of not being able to do so are having gatherings of maybe 10 to 25 people," said Dr. Eric Mcdonald, director of the county’s epidemiology and immunization department. She still deals with lingering effects now.“I’ll go walk my dog, and I’m still having difficulty breathing when I get home,” she said.For someone who experienced how troubling the virus can be, the fact that many people are now mixing with friends and extended family, going against the county’s public health order, does not sit well.RELATED: Governor asks California county to reimpose stay-at-home“It’s really disheartening to see that people are still not getting it,” she said. “Even if you feel fine, you could be a carrier.”The county officials have said it is up to law enforcement agencies to decide how to enforce the rules when it comes to gatherings, social distancing, and facial coverings.However, many officers feel like their hands are tied.A spokesperson from the San Diego Police Department said, “We do not and will not go into private homes to enforce any of the county health orders.” Private residences cannot be entered without legal authority. It is imperative the public does their part and takes responsibility to limit the spread of the virus.”ABC 10News heard from several law enforcement agencies across the county, including the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Chula Vista, Coronado, La Mesa, and El Cajon Police Departments.Many said they have been focusing on education first or giving warnings when they see violations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of women gun owners joined in solidarity Friday for the launch of #NotMeSD.It was created by San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights.The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge and choice. The group believes one way to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is with guns. “We will stand beside you, we will help you, and if you want to look at owning a gun or just coming out shooting at the range to just feel some empowerment, we're willing to stand right next to you and say how can we help?" said Jill Barto, a SDCGO member.At the gathering, Barto shared her traumatic story of being sexually assaulted. "It’s still kind of emotional, but at age 14 I was raped, I was date raped by a boyfriend, it really took a toll on me. I ended up getting pregnant from the rape, and I had my child and raised him, he’s now 37-years-old," said Barto. She was lucky to find a strong support group, one of them today being SDCGO.“It gave me a voice, it gave me a voice to say this is what happened to me and I’m not going to be ashamed of it.”The group has a three-step approach for women considering gun ownership:Get free advice about firearms from women gun owners in SDCGOGet referrals to gun shops for discounts and receive help filling out paperworkReceive help applying for a concealed carry weapon permit“It doesn’t mean they're going to buy a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re going be CCW holders, but that’s their choice, and we’re here to support them on their choice," said Barto.However, some believe guns involved in domestic violence situations do more harm than good.Carol Landale is with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. She supports a woman's right to arm herself but has concerns with the #NotMeSD message."The statistics show that when there is a gun in the home women are five times more likely to be killed with that gun, especially in domestic violence situations," said Landale. She says if a woman is going to purchase a gun, they must be extremely careful with how they store it. She also believes a lot of training is necessary to be proficient, especially in a high-stress situation.“If you’re going to be using a firearm you need to be practicing all the time. The police practice all the time, the military practices all the time, for somebody just to have a gun stored in a bedside table, who may have shot it once at a firing range, it doesn't seem like a sensible way to be able to protect yourself."Landale believes the decision to purchase a gun and use it, can have consequences.“I think the most important thing is to recognize that responsibility and to make sure you’re going to be willing to use a deadly weapon to kill somebody, that’s huge," said Landale. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of voters were left off the roster at a San Diego County polling place on Election Day, leading to frustration and delays.The problem was reported Tuesday morning at Pacific Trails Middle School at 5975 Village Center Loop Rd in Carmel Valley.Poll workers received an incomplete roster which omitted 46 names, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu confirmed.
