FORT WORTH, Texas — A Texas grand jury decided Monday to take no action against a man who fatally shot an armed man who killed two people in late December at a Fort Worth-area church.Jack Wilson is a firearms instructor who trained the volunteer security team at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas. He fatally shot Keith Thomas Kinnunen during a Dec. 29 service after he shot another security volunteer and a communion server. The gunman was heading to the front of the sanctuary when Wilson fired a single fatal shot. KXAS-TV in Dallas reports that there were about 250 people in the church at the time of the shooting.“Texas law allows an individual, when they witness somebody placing others at risk of serious bodily injury or death, to act with deadly force to protect the other individuals,” said Tim Rodgers, chief prosecutor for the Law Enforcement Incident team in the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. “Mr. Wilson did just that. He did it responsibly and, as a result, he was justified under the law in his actions.”According to NPR, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott awarded Wilson the Governor's Medal of Courtage in January following the shooting. The Forth Worth Star-Telegram reports that it is common for a grand jury to review a homicide to determine if criminal charges are warranted. 1340

For the first time, the Oxford English Dictionary has released several words for its annual "Word of the Year" because it's 2020. With everything that has happened this year, the dictionary said it selected words that saw significant spikes in searches during certain months. On Monday, the dictionary released its "Words of an Unprecedented Year" report saying that 2020 was "not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single "word of the year," so they came up with words that saw spikes in searches during certain months."For January, the word was "bushfire" because of Australia's worst bushfire season on record."Impeachment" also was influential in January because that's when President Donald Trump's impeachment trial began. In February, "acquittal" peaked since that's when President Trump's impeachment trial ended. In March, words about the coronavirus pandemic dominated, like "COVID-19," "lockdown," "social distancing," and "reopening."In June, it was the phrase "Black Lives Matter."For August, it was "mail-in" because of the U.S. election and "Belarusian" because of the re-election of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. In September, it was "moonshot," which was the name of the United Kingdom's government COVID testing program. And in October, "superspreader" spiked due to the spread of COVID-19 cases within the White House and "net-zero," which pertains to China President Xi Jinping pledging the country would be carbon neutral by 2060. 1480

Following President Donald Trump's rally in West Virginia on Tuesday evening, Aerosmith's frontman Steven Tyler was not pleased that the president used an Aerosmith song before the rally. On Wednesday, a rep for Tyler sent Trump a cease and desist letter to stop using Tyler's music during rallies, according to a copy of the letter obtained by CNN reporter Jim Acosta. The letter was filed by the LaPolt Law firm in West Hollywood, Calif. “By using ‘Livin’ On The Edge’ without our client’s permission, Mr. Trump is falsely implying that our client, once again, endorses his campaign and/or his presidency, as evidenced by actual confusion seen from the reactions of our client’s fans all over social media,” the letter stated. The letter indicates that Aerosmith has previously sent Trump orders to stop using the band's music. On Tuesday, "Livin' On The Edge" was played before the president appeared on stage. “What makes this violation even more egregious is that Mr. Trump’s use of our client’s music was previously shut down, not once, but two times, during his campaign for presidency,” the letter states.Tyler is not the only artist who has sent Trump a letter ordering him to stop playing their music at rallies. For instance, during the 2016 Republican National Convention, Queen asked for Trump and RNC to stop playing its music.  1374

Former ESPN president John Skipper says he abruptly resigned from the network late last year because he was being extorted by a cocaine dealer. In an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Report's James Andrew Miller, Skipper recounted his substance abuse issues and the decision to leave the network.Skipper told Miller that he used cocaine intermittently throughout his professional life. He says the habit began before he joined ESPN in 1997, but maintained that his drug use never interfered with his work, outside of "a missed plane and a few canceled morning appointments."Skipper also said he was "unusually clever" in finding ways to buy cocaine so as not to attract attention to himself. That changed in December, when he says someone he had not dealt with before attempted to extort him for purchasing drugs."It turned out I wasn’t careful this time," Skipper told Miller.Skipper immediately informed Disney CEO Bob Iger of the threat."When I discussed it with Bob, he and I agreed that I had placed the company in an untenable position and as a result, I should resign," Skipper told Miller. On Dec. 18, Skipper shocked ESPN employees by announcing his resignation, citing substance abuse issues. He later checked himself into a facility for therapy for his substance abuse.ESPN named Jimmy Pitaro as Skipper's replacement earlier this month.Read The Hollywood Reporter's full interview here.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W.
