CLEVELAND — Police in the Cleveland area now report a total of five Amazon delivery trucks have been stolen in northeast Ohio since Nov. 25, and with them, hundreds of packages. Investigators say in some cases the vehicles are taken by thieves as the Amazon driver leaves the running truck to make a delivery.Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said that's exactly what happened on Dec. 13, after thieves stole an Amazon vehicle during a delivery."The driver was delivering a package, she had exited the truck and was putting it on the porch," Mecklenburg said. “A truck pulled up and one of the men got out and jumped in the Amazon truck and drove away. The truck had been left running with the keys in it. It is possible up to 200 packages, we believe, were in the truck at the time it was stolen. To me it’s just heartbreaking for all the people who had ordered. You know people were ordering online to be safe because they didn’t want to get sick, so many more people were ordering on-line and were looking forward to these packages and these gifts. It’s so close to Christmas, it really is sad, I feel horrible for the people who may not get these packages in time for the holidays.”Mecklenburg said the Amazon driver was not hurt, and said GPS tracking on-board the delivery truck helped speed-up the recovery effort.“Unfortunately, there were no cameras on the truck, and at this time we couldn’t find any cameras in the immediate area where the truck was stolen,” Mecklenburg said. “It’s my understanding that it’s their policy to leave them running when they exit it to deliver a package. We have heard that with some of these trucks, drivers are being robbed by people with guns.”News 5 contacted Amazon headquarters about the truck heists, and asked if these cases have the company considering delivery protocol changes, or adding truck surveillance cameras to assist police make arrests. The company responded quickly, and said the issues are extremely important to their organization, and once they speak with police the company will issue a statement.Meanwhile, Mecklenburg said the crooks will face felony theft charges when found.“Because we’re not going to give up, our detectives are not going to give up, our officers are not going to give up," Mecklenburg said. “I got to believe that there is someone out there who knows who did this, I mean we’re talking 200 packages, and they ended up somewhere.”This story originally reported by Joe Pagonakis on News5Cleveland.com. 2515

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Slavery is still technically legal in Ohio, under one condition. After an effort by the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus to strip the language of slavery from the constitution in 2016, one state lawmaker is renewing the effort this year.While the Ohio Constitution of 1851 banned slavery in the state, it left open one exception. The constitution states: "There shall be no slavery in this state; nor involuntary servitude, unless for the punishment of crime."State Senator Cecil Thomas, a Democrat representing Cincinnati, is renewing the effort to remove the final six words — unless for the punishment of crime — from the constitution."What legitimate reason would you have that exception for unless you planned to use it for Ohio's future history?" Thomas asked the Statehouse News Bureau. To remove the language from the state constitution, Thomas' resolution must be passed by three-fifths of the state's House and Senate. Then, a statewide proposal to remove the reference to slavery would be put on the ballot.While the state Senate is planning to meet monthly, the House isn't scheduled to return to session until September. Thomas said the change should happen sooner rather than later.Thomas' proposal renews a 2016 effort by then-OLBC President, State Rep. Alicia Reece, to remove the language from the state constitution."No slavery, no exceptions," Reece said in a news release from 2016. "Over 150 years after our nation abolished slavery, there can be no acceptable circumstance for slavery in our state, and our constitution must reflect that. In 2016, this General Assembly should give Ohioans the opportunity to take slavery out of our state's guiding document."Reece's resolution was first introduced on May 25, 2016."Any form of slavery, regardless of the circumstance, is immoral and abhorrent and should not be condoned by the state constitution," said State Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-Akron) four years ago. "The people of Ohio should have the chance to remove the antiquated, offensive slavery reference from our state's founding document.""This issue is about more than language — it's about our values and what we stand for as a state," House Democratic Leader Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton) said in 2016. "A constitution is not just an arrangement of governing laws, but a set of fundamental principles that guides its people. Slavery has no rightful place in our state's founding document."The current version of the Ohio Constitution was ratified by the Ohio Constitutional Convention of 1850-1851, replacing the state's first constitution, written in 1803. At the time, only white men who had resided in the state for at least a year could vote, according to Ohio History Central. An overwhelming majority of delegates voted against extending suffrage to women of any race and African-American men. CORONADO (KGTV) - Friends gathered to mourn Navy sailor Curtis Adams Saturday night, who was killed while trying to help what he thought was a stranded driver on I-15 last week.His friends told stories on Breakers Beach at Naval Air Station North Island about how he loved cars, was a goofy basketball player and how he always made sure his hair was in place. They said that he was exactly the type of guy to pull over to help somebody in need.They released lighted balloons by candlelight to honor the 21-year-old sailor from New York.Brandon Acuna, 21, was arrested for Adams' murder. He is accused of shooting Adams after Adams stopped to help him on the side of I-15 near I-5.Acuna pled not guilty in his arraignment on Wednesday. He is due back in court on November 9.   803

COLLEGE AREA (KGTV) - A former San Diego State University student was arrested for arson on Saturday, according to university police.Madelyn Delarosa is reportedly connected to a string of fires within the College Area. Campus police arrested Delarosa on Saturday morning after, they say, she started a fire in a parking garage. The fire reignited Saturday night. Students were evacuated from the Granada on Hardy Apartments both times. Police say Delarosa's crimes started on Thursday, March 14th, around 11 a.m., when a university police officer spotted a parked vehicle on fire near the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue. The officer successfully extinguished the fire, police said. There were no injuries.Officers were then notified of another fire involving the exterior door of an apartment in the 5600 block of Hardy Avenue, according to a police press release. That fire was extinguished before crews arrived and no one was injured.On Friday, March 15th, at around 8:30 a.m., community members notified police of another fire involving an apartment near the 5500 block of Montezuma Road. There were no injuries, and the fire went out on its own. Delarosa was arrested for possession of arson materials, arson of an inhabited structure, and arson to property. The motive is still under investigation. 1309
