SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Coronavirus cases on the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt are multiplying quickly. On Thursday, Department of Defense officials announced 23 sailors have now tested positive for COVID-19. Officials say they have mild symptoms, fever and a cough. The aircraft carrier left her San Diego homeport in January for a seven-month deployment with roughly 5,000 sailors are on board. The carrier's last stop was in Vietnam more than two weeks ago. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Close to 100 people packed the Sherman Heights community center Friday night.Just about all of them were there to tell city officials to back off their plan to set up a homeless storage facility at Commercial and 20th Streets.The city says the plan is not finalized, but they are in negotiations with leasing the building. “We have a playground is about 15 feet from this building,” said Noel Bishop, the principal at Our Lady’s School. “The reality is it’s just an open invitation for people to come back to this community and start living on the streets again… having people in our neighborhood that might be drug users, not mentally stable.”Jonathan Herrera, senior advisor for homelessness for the city of San Diego, says the site is expected to similar to the one on 16th street. It will be a place for the homeless to store their belongings while they visit clinics, classes or go to job interviews.The city is promising to be a good neighbor, stressing the site will have security 24/7.  There will be loitering, drugs or alcohol allowed, and they will have regular waste pick-ups within a block radius.“We are currently looking at other facilities in beach communities, uptown, mid-city and southeastern San Diego to see if we can provide additional services in those areas as well,” Herrera said. He said there were a lot of concerns raised that they are taking into consideration, but the city plans to move forward in the process and bring the plan to the San Diego Housing Commission on March 9th.“The mayor highlighted that the time to develop universal consensus is over and that effort to develop consensus has caused us action, and that’s no longer tolerable,” Herrera added. 1733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Candidates vying for the a seat in the 50th Congressional District reacted Monday to news that Rep. Duncan Hunter is set to change his plea to guilty in a campaign finance case. Documents show that Hunter is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a "change of plea hearing." Hunter said he would plead guilty to one count of misusing campaign funds in an interview with San Diego TV station KUSI. "My trial was set for January 22 -- that's not going to happen now. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, I'm going to change my plea to guilty. I think it's important not to have a public trial for three reasons, and those three reasons are my kids ... It's been a privilege to serve in Congress for 11 years, three tours in the Marine Corps in the wars. I think we've done a lot of great things for the nation."RELATED STORIES: Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego.
