It's something not seen often, or ever, when driving on the highways and roads of northeast Ohio. But one driver lived to tell the tale after hitting a black bear head-on.Corbin Hardy, 27, was driving home to Westlake, Ohio from West Virginia on Friday when a black bear darted across the Ohio Turnpike."I was cruising down the middle lane, and at the very last second, I see a face, and it's the face of a bear. It was not even a 100 feet in front of me when it was crossing the lanes," said Hardy. "I only had time to lift my foot off the pedal."Hardy said the bear was large and the impact was so intense that the airbags deployed and his engine was left smoking.The bear was found on the left shoulder, around 100 yards from where it was initially hit."It was crazy. Nothing like hitting a deer. I was going 70 miles per hour, normal cruising speed and when I hit the bear, my car slowed down to around 50 mph. My head barely touched the airbag," Hardy said.He totaled the 2010 Subaru Legacy that he purchased when he was 18, but was, fortunately, able to walk away without a scratch. Even his cabin was untouched.Authorities told him that the bear most likely died on impact."If it had to die, I'm grateful it was sudden," Hardy said.Sightings of black bears in the Cleveland area have increased in the last several weeks. Last week, a black bear was spotted in Brecksville trying to get into a beehive.Several days later, landscapers in Pepper Pike spotted a small black bear before it ran off into the woods.Hardy credits his vehicle for letting him walk away without a scratch. In proximity, the United States and Canada couldn’t be closer.  But when it comes to gun control, the two countries couldn’t be further apart. “A majority of the people do not feel the need to have a gun because we’re quite safe,” says Debbie Thorburn, a Windsor, Ontario resident.In Canada, they talk about guns differently because they look at guns differently.“You have the Second Amendment,” said Brian Green, a manager at General Guns in Windsor. “We don’t.”Detroit, Michigan saw 302 homicides in 2016, with most involving a firearm. Across the river in Windsor, during the same time, there were only three. “I would think that most Canadians are squeamish around firearms and don’t want any part of it,” said Al Frederick, Windsor’s police chief. “The difference, I think in my view, is the accessibility to firearms,” he said. “We don’t have a culture of people that are eager to carry or seek out to carry a firearm.”In Canada, unlike the U.S., it’s a crime for the average citizen to even walk around with a gun.  But that’s far from the only thing separating the two countries.A first-time gun buyer in the United States can walk into a store and leave with a gun the same day; in Canada, it can take months.The U.S. still allows for some gun purchases without a background check. That’s not the case in Canada, where they’re mandatory for any gun license. “Your file is given to an officer and it’s their job to go through it and prove that you are able to have a license,” said Brian Green of General Guns.While there’s often a push to expand gun rights in the U.S., in Canada there are few leading that fight. As one Canadian told The Now this week, “Guns are a right where you live. In its latest COVID-19 and cruise ship travel update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends "all people" should avoid traveling on a cruise ship and river cruises worldwide.The agency has raised the level from three to four, which means it's a high risk of getting the coronavirus.On Oct. 30, the agency issued a level three, which urged cruise ships to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.The new guidance says passengers should get tested three to five days after their trip and stay home for seven days, even if you test negative.If you decide to not get tested, passengers should stay home for 14 days. 667
