(KGTV) — An unusual fossil deposit was discovered during construction at the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, yielding remains that may be up to 28 million years old.The state Department of Transportation says skeletal remains of extinct mammals — including camels, oreodonts, rodents, and possibly a large carnivore — were discovered at the site of the SR-11 and Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project.The fossils are estimated to be somewhere between 16 to 28 million years old, or Earth's Tertiary Period, and could provide more insight into our area's history.Paleo Monitors from the San Diego Natural History Museum found the remains in what appears to be a new geologic formation that has yet to be mapped in the region. The area also contains plant fossils and volcanic bombs (or pieces of rock ejected by a volcano), the DOT says.The Nat will curate and catalog the fossils into its paleontology program.The construction project, which will create a new port of entry into the country, will continue as planned, the state said. 1080

(KGTV) — Border Patrol officers in the South Bay made a spicy discovery in a shipment of peppers this week.Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a 37-year-old Mexican national enterting through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in a tractor pulling a trailer of cargo. The cargo listed jalape?o peppers on the manifest.Upon secondary inspection, a canine team alerted agents to the shipment. Officer say they discovered 314 large, wrapped packages of marijuana, weighing about 7,560 pounds. The narcotics are valued at .3 million.“I am proud of the officers for seizing this significant marijuana load,” said Otay Mesa Port Director, Rosa Hernandez. “Not only did they prevent the drugs from reaching our community, they also prevented millions of dollars of potential profit from making it into the hands of a transnational criminal organization.”The seizure followed another massive bust on Aug. 13, in which officers discovered 10,642 pounds of marijuana concealed in a shipment of plastic auto parts at the same cargo facility. 1063

PALOMAR MOUNTAIN (CNS) - Due to overnight snowfall and current low temperatures, chains were being required today on Palomar Mountain, the California Highway Patrol said.Only vehicles with chains, or four-wheel drive snow-rated tires, will be allowed access, authorities said."The CHP and the San Diego Sheriff's Department will be patrolling the area to monitor trespassing and make sure the roadways are kept clear of parked vehicles," said Oceanside CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, who pointed out there are limited facilities on Palomar Mountain for food, restrooms and trash.Mountain visitors were being urged to respect the privacy of residents and private property.Officials also recommend using extra caution on slippery roads, reducing speed and increasing following distance due to compromised visibility in wintery conditions.The CHP also reminded visitors to Palomar Mountain to "practice good snow etiquette."That involves:Parking only where legally allowed, and not blocking roadway accessfor emergency vehicles. First, as I doubt you’re aware, Mr. Evans himself has testified – unequivocally and under oath – that Mr. Ryan is not racist and was his friend; so whatever point Mr. Evans is trying to make by leaking deposition testimony to you is undone by his own words. Second, this testimony is not Founders’ defense in this case as you allege. Founders evaluated and decided to terminate Mr. Evans based only on his job performance.
