SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Coroner's officials today said that a worker who fell 60 feet to his death while setting up a stage for the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio was a 49-year-old San Diego man.The worker was identified as Christopher Griffin, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office. The Riverside County Fire Department reported receiving a call of someone falling from a roof at 9:26 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Monroe Street and Avenue 50.The venue for the festival, the Empire Polo Club, is located on the southwest corner of that intersection. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.In a written statement Saturday, the festival's production company, Goldenvoice, confirmed the death."Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard- working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. We will miss him dearly,'' the company said.The Indio Police Department was investigating the death. According to the entertainment website TMZ, Griffin was climbing the stage scaffolding to install rigging equipment and was not using a safety harness when he fell. 1512

Komen San Diego Race for the Cure.The event will raise funds for Komen's breast cancer programs, including mammography, financial assistance to patients and meal delivery.An opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., and the 5K run and 1K walk/run begin at 8 a.m. at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street on the west side of Balboa Park.According to Komen, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego and one dies daily from the disease.However, the survival rate is nearly 99 percent if the most common form of breast cancer is detected early, Komen officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An East Village couple was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly subjecting a 3-year old child to torture and sexual abuse over a several-month period while caring for the toddler at their home, San Diego police reported.Officers arrested Marcos Javier Ramirez, 27, and 25-year-old Vennesia Ruiz in the Midway area on Tuesday evening, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said.Ramirez and Ruiz had been entrusted by an acquaintance to care for the child when the abuse allegedly began last October, Takeuchi said. Three months later, the toddler's mother began to suspect that there was abuse occurring and notified the police, the spokesman said.Ramirez was booked on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor, forcible sex with a foreign object, torture and child cruelty, according to jail records. Ruiz was being held on suspicion of two counts of the latter charge. Both were scheduled for arraignment April 6.Takeuchi, who declined to specify the child's gender, described the suspects as "a couple" but said he did not know if they are husband and wife. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - It took emergency crews about 20 minutes Monday to free a tree trimmer who wound up trapped in a palm tree, upside down, about 30 feet above the ground in a San Carlos-area neighborhood.The work accident in the 8000 block of Dicenza Lane, south of Mission Gorge Road and west of Golfcrest Drive, was reported about 8:15 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.After firefighters got the victim, a man in his 40s, out of the tree, medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluation of complaints of dizziness and nausea, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. 605

  

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday released the name of a 19-year-old man killed last week in a shooting at Linda Vista Recreation Center.Nam Nguyen of San Diego was shot by an unidentified assailant about 4:45 p.m. Friday during a fight between two groups of young men near a basketball court at the city recreation facility in the 7000 block of Levant Street, according to police.Paramedics took Nguyen to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lt.
