PARK COUNTY, Colo. — A California church leader was identified as a man found dead off Guanella Pass, Colorado, in 1974, officials announced on Tuesday.Anthony John Armbrust, who led a metaphysical church and was also an aeronautical engineer, was 45 when he and his wife went missing, according to David Kintz, the Park County coroner.Kintz said Armbrust's death was likely a suicide. His remains were first discovered in February 1974, but the case went cold.After identifying Armbrust through forensic genetic genealogy, investigators learned that Armbrust had been suffering from a terminal illness and that he and his wife, Renee, had moved from the San Diego, Calif., area to Golden, Colorado, near Denver.Armbrust then sent his church members a letter, asking them to come collect he and his wife's belongings from their Golden apartment. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A 7-Eleven employee waiting for his shift to start jumped into action Wednesday when three employees of a Church’s Chicken were shot in south San Diego County. David Walker, who had been inside the Otay Mesa West restaurant just an hour earlier, was sitting in his car when he heard the gunfire that killed a woman and injured two men. “It sounded like firecrackers and that’s what I thought it was at first, at first two, then it kept going,” Walker said. “It went two, pow pow! And it stopped, then it went again. That’s when I realized something was wrong.” The scene became chaotic as people in the drive-thru sped away from the area while others started shouting and running back inside. RELATED: One dead, two more shot at Church’s Chicken in Otay Mesa WestWalker saw the shooter leave the Church’s Chicken. “He was just booking it; he was out that door as fast as he could get out it.” Walker then focused on a disturbing sight: one of the male employees fell out of the back door, bleeding. “So my concentration went to him and I took my belt off, wrapped it around his arm. He had another hole in him, I tried to plug that until police got here.” While he was giving medical aid, Walker talked with the man, who he described as a South Bay resident in his 50s with three children. “Just telling him - calm his breathing, talk to me about his family, tell me about his kids just to calm his breathing down; he was going to black out a couple times.” Walker believes the man was shot twice, in the arm and armpit. He was able to use skills he learned from his sister and ex-partner, both nurses. “He was bleeding so bad, I just had to do what I had to do.” The victim was able to tell Walker the shooter was a man he had seen around the neighborhood. “I’m from this neighborhood; I’m not really surprised that something like this happened. I’ve only worked here for two and a half months but I’ve been here my whole life,” Walker said. San Diego Police said the man was in stable condition about two hours after the shooting. “If he lived, you know I’m happy. I did what I could do to help somebody,” Walker said. 2155

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — An unusual fossil deposit was discovered during construction at the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, yielding remains that may be up to 28 million years old.The state Department of Transportation says skeletal remains of extinct mammals — including camels, oreodonts, rodents, and possibly a large carnivore — were discovered at the site of the SR-11 and Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project.The fossils are estimated to be somewhere between 16 to 28 million years old, or Earth's Tertiary Period, and could provide more insight into our area's history.Paleo Monitors from the San Diego Natural History Museum found the remains in what appears to be a new geologic formation that has yet to be mapped in the region. The area also contains plant fossils and volcanic bombs (or pieces of rock ejected by a volcano), the DOT says.The Nat will curate and catalog the fossils into its paleontology program.The construction project, which will create a new port of entry into the country, will continue as planned, the state said. 1080

Police in North Carolina are searching for a suspect in the shooting death of a man who was killed while streaming live on Facebook, according to CNN affiliate WSOC-TV.The shooting took place Monday in the town of Wingate. The victim has been identified as Prentis Robinson, 55.Robinson's Facebook page is filled with live videos of him playing instruments and walking down the street with a selfie-stick.Nothing seemed different when the 55-year-old was filming live Monday morning, selfie-stick in hand, complaining about a family member who Robinson claims stole one of his three cellphones. According to WSOC, the video showed him stopping at the Wingate Police Department to report the alleged theft.The Facebook video shows Robinson as he left the station, walked up a hill toward his home and exchanged a few words with another man.Then there was gunfire and Robinson, along with his phone, fell to the ground.CNN has reached out for further comment from the Wingate Police Department.Wingate police Chief Donnie Gay told WSOC, "I'd just spoke to him, it was, I just ... it's hard to say anything about that. I just got through talking to him."Robinson was found face down on the street. Douglas Cleveland Colson, 65, was identified by police as a suspect in the shooting, and is now wanted on a murder charge, according to WSOC.The fatal shooting led to a lockdown at nearby Wingate University, which is less than a mile from the scene. POINT ROBERTS, Wash. -- In Point Roberts, Washington, the beauty of nature isn’t hard to find.“The environment is unsurpassed,” said Brian Calder, director of the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce. “I mean, it's a beautiful spot.”It’s a town of about 1,000 people, where two nations meet: the U.S. and Canada.Lately, though, people there feel more like they’re caught in the middle.“We're surrounded by foreign territory, not part of North America, USA,” Calder said.Point Roberts is what’s known as an “exclave.” When a 19th century treaty established the 49th parallel as part of the U.S. border with Canada, Point Roberts ended up on the American side, but cut off from the rest of the U.S. because it sits at the end of a peninsula, with Canada to the north of it.Normally, travelling back and forth across the border isn’t an issue.However, because of the coronavirus, the border is closed and the town – which relies on tourism – is at a standstill.“Our traffic comes from Canada, lower mainland primarily, and that's what drives our economy. Period,” Calder said. “We have nothing internally.”Whitney McElroy owns Breakwaters Bar & Grill, where hundreds of people usually gather for music and food. That didn’t happen this year, though. The current situation forced him to furlough all but two employees.“We're down between 85 and 90%,” McElroy said of the grill. “By opening the border, it would considerably help this community. It would bring it back to life again, as it's pretty much dead now.”One of the few things keeping the town alive is the lone supermarket.“On a normal summer week, we do we see about 8,000 customers,” said Ali Hayton, who owns the Point Roberts Marketplace.This year, business at the supermarket is down 80%. Hayton applied for the federal Paycheck Protection Program, which helped financially, but only through July.“I don't want a handout because those go away,” Hayton said. “I want to work for a living and the only way I can do that is if I have people able to come down here.”Weekly testing shows that, so far, there have been no recorded cases of coronavirus in Point Roberts.Because of its unusual location, surrounded by water on three sides and Canada to the north, the border closure isn’t just affecting businesses in Point Roberts. It’s also affecting families, in some cases, by separating them.“People can't sustain - financially and emotionally and spiritually - this kind of stress,” said Point Roberts resident Rena Andreoli.Andreoli and her family are dual citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who live in Point Roberts. Since the lone school in town only goes up to 3rd grade, her children, like some others there, attend nearby schools in Canada. School, though, is considered a non-essential border crossing. So, in order to continue going to her current high school in Canada, her oldest daughter moved in with friends of the family.“By doing that to a family, we're really, we're just killing these kids,” Andreoli said. “So, we need to smarten up as a country, both countries, and look past the politics and look past all that.”Residents believe there could be a simple solution.“If we can have an exemption federally from both sides of the fence, then I think it would definitely ease things and make things a lot more palatable for people,” said Nic Lehoux, who lives in Point Roberts.Recently, a twice weekly passenger ferry service and small plane service began for residents in Point Roberts. Before then, they had no other way to reach the U.S., without driving through the Canadian border and over into Washington state.Still, the border remains closed for the foreseeable future, as the closure has been renewed every 30 days for the past six months. 3724
