Even shorter breaks can erase some lessons.A special program at San Diego Unified is helping keep kids stay sharp and excited about learning all year round, even during breaks. It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. You're learning about the characters but what are characters thinking? What's motivating the character? So, going a little deeper."Organizers say it's about connecting with a child's curious nature. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county Sheriff's Department is offering free in-home safety inspections to San Diegans in their patrol areas. On Thursday, 10News tagged along for an inspection at Robin and Mike Judd's home in Santee. "It's a concern, in today's world, security, how safe are you? And you can never be too safe," Robin said. Crime prevention specialists Mike Mateo and Monica Cordero spent about an hour inside the home, pointing out potential flaws concerning locks, lighting, and outdoor decorations that could be used to break windows.The duo also gave information on crime prevention and neighborhood watch programs to use as preventative measures to local crime.To arrange for an in-home inspection, San Diegans can call their local sheriff's substation and ask for crime prevention.You can find a list of the contacts here. 846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is one step closer to approving the 6.5M purchase of two hotels to permanently house homeless people living in the convention center.When the pandemic hit in March, the Bridge Shelters and Golden Hall were cleared out and about a thousand people were brought into the convention center, according to the mayor's office.The emergency setup allowed for proper social distancing, and resources to request PPE and other supplies.The convention center will be emptied in December to prepare to open for events when it is safe.Since the pandemic, downtown has looked different according to Marshall Anderson, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I would encourage all of you to walk around downtown so you can see just about how safe and livable it is at the moment ... For too long has downtown acted as the region's homeless shelter. It's nice to see another neighborhood bearing some of the responsibility for sheltering some of our most vulnerable," he said.The city plans to buy two Residence Inn hotels, one in Kearney Mesa, the other in Mission Valley. Together the hotels could house about 400 people and support tenants who are accessing services for mental health and substance abuse issues.During the city's Public Safety and Livable Communities Committee Meeting Wednesday, Mission Valley neighbors voiced their complaints."It's a bad idea, I am absolutely opposed to this project," a man who has lived in Mission Valley for 30 years said."My real concern is obviously the safety of my community but also the safety of the potential residents ... I am just opposed to this idea because it doesn't seem practical for the city and I feel like it opens the city up to a lot of liability in terms of motorist versus pedestrian accidents," a woman living in the same neighborhood added. She is concerned there is not enough transit or pedestrian infrastructure in the area.The people who would move into the hotels, according to the mayor's office, are stable and already accessing services for mental health and substance abuse. The office added there are already similar units in the area.The committee passed the plan to purchase the hotels and the item will go before the full city council on Oct. 13. 2299
