ALPINE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Some residents in Alpine are ramping up their yard work after Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for the Calfornia's most wildfire-prone areas. Alpine residents have a name for yard work. "It's a necessary evil. We have to clear it out," Jonathan Hesse said. 10News met Hesse as he and his son Ben were raking brush and chainsawing a dead tree on their front yard. "The drought, they [the trees] couldn't handle it anymore. So they died," Hesse said, pointing at the row of what used to be lush trees. He said the time had come to chop them down because he was sure they would ignite his entire 2.5-acre property. In the last two decades, the Hesse's have had three close calls. Their last evacuation was the 2018 West Fire. Luckily, they survived, as did their home. But they are not taking chances. "This year, there's a lot of weeds, and that's going to be tough to keep up with," Hesse said. Luckily, he has a helpful son and a sturdy tractor to help with the clean-up process. They will eventually put their large pile of dead logs and branches through a wood chipper to make mulch. Thanks to the work they did today, the flammability of their home is much lower than it was yesterday. "That's one thing we want to do. We want to make sure it doesn't get out of control," Hesse said. American Airlines has sent out letters to roughly 25,000 employees about possible layoffs and furloughs. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters, as they are called, are required by law 60 days before layoffs or furloughs are anticipated.The letters from the airline specifically say they are taking this step because of “overages we may start to see Oct. 1 when our Payroll Support Program funding expires.”They reference customer revenues being down 80 percent in June 2020 compared to June 2019. The company says they have 20,000 more employees on payroll than they “will need to operate our smaller schedule this fall.”American says they hope to lessen the number of furloughs by offering employees opportunities like extended leave and early retirement. "We know American will be smaller going forward and we must right-size all aspects of our airline to adjust to that new reality," the letter said. United Airlines sent nearly 36,000 similar letters to employees earlier this month. A website tracking early voting numbers reports more than 23,500,000 votes have been cast in the 2020 presidential election as of Friday night.The US Election Project, run by Professor Michael McDonald at the University of Florida for the last few elections, is keeping track of early voting, mail-in and absentee ballot data states make available. The details of those ballots are not shared, these are just the raw numbers of how many ballots have been cast.The site is also tracking each state’s ballots cast as compared to the entire number of votes counted in the 2016 election. For the country as a whole, the more than 23.5 million ballots cast is about 17 percent of the total number of votes in the 2016 election. Some states appear to be on track to potentially reach their 2016 voter turnout number, or get very close, before the election.In Vermont, more than 136,000 ballots have been cast, that’s more than 42 percent of the total number of ballots cast in the 2016 election.In Texas, early voting started Tuesday and already more than 2,647,000 ballots have been cast. That’s almost 30 percent of the total number of ballots cast in 2016.Professor McDonald does track about a dozen states that report party affiliation of the ballots returned. Those numbers show a higher number of Democrats have returned their ballots compared to those identified as Republican.
