A social media post crediting a Nashville man for stepping in to comfort a flight passenger who was body-shamed has gained plenty of attention.Savannah Phillips wrote on Facebook about her experience after being called "a smelly fatty" on board a United flight from Oklahoma to Illinois on Monday. The mother said she always preferred to sit by herself in flights because she was self-conscious about her weight, and feared others would feel uncomfortable sitting next to her.A man she described to be in his 60s with yellow sunglasses who claimed to be a comedian sat next right next to her.Her post stated,"As soon as I got buckled, he sat back down...his phone was maybe 12 inches from my face and he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to a "smelly fatty." I don’t even know what the rest of his text said. I turned my head away as fast as I could. I was shocked and it was like confirmation of the negative things I think about myself on a daily basis. Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face."Phillips told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville she began to cry and even prayed for the man. Unbeknownst to her, another passenger sitting in the row behind them across the aisle also happened to see the message on his phone."He tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'I need to talk to you'" she recalled. "The guy took his earphones out and turned around and he said, 'We're switching seats right now.'" Phillips remembered the passenger saying he was not going to put up with what the man said. They eventually switched seats, and an unlikely and pleasant encounter ensued."When he sat down he saw me crying and asked why I was crying." Phillips said. "He said to not let it get to me and not to worry about it, and we started making small talk which made me feel better." She learned the passenger who helped comfort her was Chase Irwin, a father and manager at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row Nashville on Broadway.Phillips shared her experience on social media in hopes he would be recognized, and within half an hour, he acknowledged reading the post.Irwin emphasized to WTVF on the phone that he did not intervene for publicity. He described feeling infuriated once seeing the message from the man's phone after he further said he was going to vomit. "I was going to wait until the end of the flight to say something but I could not have this guy sit next to her this whole flight and her thinking he's making fun of her," Irwin said. "It really gets to me deep down when I see someone crying, and when I saw her crying it really hit me hard and actually got sick to my stomach.""I was so blessed and happy he was there," Phillips added. A mother of a 9-month-old baby is upset after she says her daughter received a second degree burn while she was in a daycare in Detroit on Friday.Her daughter attended Lafayette Day Care Center on E. Lafayette Street in Detroit.It was a seemingly normal day for Sabrina Shellman when she picked up her kids at the center Friday afternoon. It wasn’t until she got home, she noticed a burn her daughter’s leg.The family took the baby to the doctors, filed a police report and then contacted Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit.“It’s frustrating, it’s heartbreaking, it makes me really, really angry,” Shellman said.When she picked up her kids, 9-month-old Jayla and 4-year-old Jayden, she said no one told her about the injury.It wasn’t until she changed the baby that she said she noticed something was wrong.“That’s when I noticed the burn on the back of her leg,” she said. “No one bothered to call me. No one informed me of this at all.”Sabrina rushed Jayla to the doctors, who told her it’s a second degree burn. She immediate called the daycare.Shellman said a manager said the injury did not happen at the daycare. The mother said she thinks they are trying to cover it up.“My daughter received a burn," she said. "They should be ashamed of themselves, definitely, they should be ashamed.”Sabrina asked her son if he saw what happened, he says one of the caregivers did it.“Spilled oatmeal on her leg, that’s what he told me,” she said.Now, Sabrina said baby Jayla has been traumatized.“She’s screaming, she’s yelling, she won’t stop crying.”The daycare manager didn’t want to talk on-camera, but said they don’t know how the baby got burned and claims it didn’t happen at the daycare.Sabrina says that’s a lie.“Mistakes happen but the fact that you all tried to cover it up and didn’t bother to call me that says a lot about them,” she said.The most recent report from the state shows the daycare has no violations. WXYZ has requested more information to see if there have been any violations in the past.Shellman has pulled her children from the daycare.She said she is consulting with an attorney because she said someone needs to be held accountable for her daughter’s injury. 2209

A suspended Buffalo Police officer accused of assaulting a suspect in the Buffalo city lockup has been found not guilty on all charges.32-year-old Joseph Hassett was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, official misconduct, offering a false instrument for filing and making a punishable false written statement in connection to an incident that happened in March 2017.Judge Russell Buscaglia heard a bench trial in State Supreme Court and announced the not guilty verdict Thursday morning.According to investigators, Hassett was recorded on camera allegedly assaulting a drug suspect on March 18, 2017. The suspect was taken to ECMC for a head injury and a cut on his forehead that required stitches. The Erie County District Attorney's Office and the Buffalo Police Department both said they didn't learn about the incident until video of the confrontation was requested by the victim's attorney during the course of his criminal case stemming from the March arrest. 1032
A report from the Tucson Police Department is revealing new details about the death of Carlos Adrian Ingram-Lopez while in TPD custody in April.The police department began its investigation into the incident hours after it happened on April 21. Nearly two months later, on June 19, the department finished its report and handed it off to TPD Chief Chris Magnus. After a news conference about the incident Wednesday, TPD released the full report to members of the news media.TIMELINE: What happened after Carlos Ingram-Lopez died while in TPD custodyThe report recommends termination for officers Samuel Routledge, Ryan Starbuck, and Jonathan Jackson, who had resigned the day before the investigation was completed.The discipline report focuses on how officers are supposed to treat someone in a state of “excited delirium," how it greatly increased the risk of dangerous physical distress and how the three officers failed to meet their standards and training.The report draws a number of conclusions about the officers involved in the incident. It says:The initial report of Ingram-Lopez's behavior should have prepared the officers to deal with excited delirium before they even saw him.Ingram-Lopez's behavior at the scene made excited delirium very clear.The report documents dates of when the officers had training on excited delirium at the academy and in other training sessions after that.Excited delirium and the likelihood of drug intake make overheating and rapid heartbeat something officers should anticipate.The fact that he was calling for water confirms they should have been more aware of his physical distress.The officers were trained on, and should have been alert to, signs of breathing trouble, like wheezing, and simply saying “I can’t breathe." Ingram-Lopez did both.The officers had been trained on the “recovery position” designed to reduce physical distress on a restrained suspect.One of the officers who arrived later said within 15 seconds, “Shouldn’t he be in the recovery position?” That officer is not being disciplined.The officers put a “spit sock” over Ingram-Lopez's face because of his choking and clearing his throat made them fear he would spit and spread COVID-19. The spit sock was available to officers even before the COVID outbreak.While officers did not use prohibited methods like neck holds, they noted Ingram-Lopez was a large man and one of the officers kneeled on his back for a sustained period.Officer Jonathan Jackson was Lead Police Officer -- slightly more senior than the other officers who first arrived at the scene. He was expected to take command and organize the other officers. A San Francisco salon owner says she is “done” with the city and plans to close her shop permanently following backlash and controversy this last week after a video of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi inside the salon without a mask surfaced.Owner Erica Kious announced her decision Wednesday night on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show.Kious owns ESalonSF in San Francisco. She says one of her stylists, who is an independent contractor, told her Speaker Pelosi was coming in for an appointment on August 31. Salons in San Francisco have been closed since March, and were told they could reopen for outdoor services on September 1.Kious released the video of Pelosi’s visit, showing the Speaker with wet hair and not wearing a mask at the time, the day after her appointment.Pelosi responded to the video saying her team had been told it was OK to come inside to have her hair done, and that she felt the incident was “a set-up.” A statement released by the stylist who did her hair reportedly agrees it was a set-up, and states he had gotten permission from Kious verbally the night before the appointment.ABC7 in the Bay Area reports some stylists at ESalonSF have quit, claiming Kious’ made them work during the pandemic in unsafe conditions.The video of Pelosi sparked reaction from a lot of people; including fellow stylists and salon owners, business owners in California, and President Donald Trump, among others. Demonstrators in curlers left hair dryers outside Pelosi’s home last week according to local media. Video of Pelosi's visit was played during a White House briefing on September 3. Kious now says she is “afraid to go back” to San Francisco.“I started to just get a ton of phone calls, text messages, emails, all my Yelp reviews… saying that they hope I go under and that I fail,” Kious told Carlson on Wednesday night. “So just a lot of negativity towards my business.”The news comes just two days after Kious thanked supporters after a GoFundMe account set up to support her and her salon raised more than 0,000.The account stated, "At the conclusion of this fundraiser, ALL donations will go directly to Erica to pay off any debts from the business that she is forced to shut down, expenses to relocate and reopen in a new location."It is not clear if Kious’ comments Wednesday night about closing permanently mean she will not re-open a salon in a different location.
