PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Officials in Prairie Village say a garbage truck crashed into a house in Prairie Village Wednesday morning. Police said the driver fell out of the truck after turning onto Cedar Street from 83rd Terrace. The truck continued to roll and smashed into the corner of a home's garage.The homeowners were home at the time but were uninjured. A spokeswoman at Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the trash truck driver remains in critical condition."I opened the front door and the truck was barreling across my grass and all the sudden it hit and we shook,” said the homeowner, Rick Evrard.Michael Yates was remodeling a kitchen at a home across the street when he heard the crash.“All the sudden I heard the boom,” said Yates, “That’s when I looked out the window and I saw the truck was inside the house over there and the fellow was laying on the ground.”The man lying on the ground was the driver. Yates and Evrard ran to him to see if they could help him.“We got towels. He was bleeding profusely from his head,” said Evrard.Evrard was told his house is uninhabitable for the time being.The truck also clipped a gas meter and the gas was shut off for repairs.  1223

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - He's got sticky fingers and a green thumb. A business owner says his Poway office has been repeatedly burglarized by a thief who steals plants, among other things.The man snatched succulents and pilfered a large plumeria in his latest visit to the Poway business on Adrian Street near Midland Road on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., according to owner Tom Belway.The grab-and-go gardener also disabled a surveillance camera and removed sensor lights, he said."This is the sixth or seventh time they have swept the property for any 'loose' items," Belway wrote on social media. "Previously they stole propane tanks, rocking chairs, construction materials and plants. One visit they had all of our outdoor furniture staged at the fence but they must have been interrupted."Down the street at the Park Church on Midland Road, pastor Andrew Henneforth said his church has been hit twice over the past two weeks.He said in the first incident, someone broke into a camper trailer and stole landscaping equipment and propane tanks.The second time, the thief hopped a fence and took a bicycle. There was a skateboard and drugs left behind, the pastor said."In this situation, am I a victim? Sure," Henneforth said. "But in some ways he's kind of a victim as well -- to addiction, to substance abuse."The church added security cameras after the second incident, he said.It's not clear if the two cases are related. President Donald Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett as his choice to become the next Associate Justice to the Supreme Court. This is the third vacancy while Trump has been president.Trump’s announcement Saturday is eight days after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Trump reflected on Ginsburg's passing, saying the country “mourned the loss of a true American legend. She was a legal giant and a pioneer for women.”Barrett also spoke about Ginsburg and her legacy for women in the legal profession and all Americans. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in 1998 and 1999. Scalia and Ginsburg had a close friendship, despite their strong legal disagreements. (KGTV) - Family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to a Poway teen, killed while driving home from college for Christmas break."She always brings a positive vibe wherever she goes. Her smile can really brighten up the room," said friend Brandon Kim.For the friends of Kim Huynh, smiles for them are hard to muster."To me it was just shock," said Kim.Last Thursday night, the 18-year-old Huynh was driving back home to Poway with her older sister after finishing her first quarter at UC Riverside, when the car spun out on a Murietta highway, slamming into a tree and killing her. Her sister suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation."She was one of my closest friends," said Kim. Kim met Huynh in grade school."Super smart. Ten times smarter than me," said Kim.Kim said his friend also had a joyful side and loved having fun. Huynh danced for one of Rancho Bernardo High's dance teams. After graduating, she enrolled at UC Riverside on scholarship. The pre-med student also hoped to help her immigrant parents."She said she wanted to become a doctor to give back to them for taking such good care of her," said Kim.After her death, friends gathered this weekend to remember a promising life cut short."Everybody broke down ... I want to grow up with everyone. The fact I have to leave someone behind breaks my heart," said Kim.The funeral is planned for Thursday.
