BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday watched a classical Peking Opera show along with other audience in Beijing.The opera "Women General of Yang Family", which was staged at the Mei Lanfang Theatre, starred three generations of artists with the China National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC).The opera, set against the backdrop of warfares in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), eulogizes the patriotism demonstrated in Yang Family's battle against the invading Liao Kingdom and Western Xia Kingdom.The CNPOC created and rehearsed the opera in 1959, which was later widely believed to have marked a milestone for the development of Peking Opera with a history of nearly 200 years.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China and Russia should make joint efforts to achieve common development and combat global challenges.While meeting with Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov in Beijing, Hu urged the two countries to work for the establishment of a more fair and rational international order.Mironov's visit, which ran from Oct. 17 to 19, was another high-level visit on the heels of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's three-day state visit to China last month."China is willing to work with Russia to materialize consensuses and tasks agreed to during high-level visits," said Hu.Mironov on Monday co-chaired with China's top legislator Wu Bangguo the fourth meeting of the cooperation committee between China's National People's Congress and the Russian Federation Council, a regular parliamentary exchange mechanism for the benefit of bilateral ties.Hu said China supports the increasing exchanges between legislative bodies of the two countries, hoping the two sides could help publicize the ideas of generational friendship and reciprocal cooperation, push forward pragmatic cooperation in various fields and cooperation on adjacent regions of both countries.Hu also said the two countries should enhance coordination within multilateral mechanisms in a bid to contribute to improved China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination.Echoing Hu's remarks, Mironov said the sound development of Russia-China ties complies with the mutual interests of both countries, adding that Medvedev's successful visit, during which the two countries signed a package of deals and agreements, would have a positive impact on future bilateral cooperation.The Russian Federation Council will play its due role in facilitating bilateral cooperation in such areas as politics, trade and energy so as to make new contributions to the friendship between the two countries, Mironov said.Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Mironov later on Tuesday, and called on the two governments to fully implement consensuses reached by the two sides, inject new vitality into the two countries' modernization process and maintain world peace and stability."The profound changes of the international situation has not only offered precious opportunities but also brought forward higher request for developing China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination," Wen said. 

TALLINN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), opened here on Wednesday the first Confucius Institute in the Baltic region.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, said he hopes the facility, jointly launched by Estonia's prestigious Tallinn University and China's Guangxi University with the help of the Chinese Language Council ( also known as Hanban), would serve as a regional center for spreading Chinese culture and offer quality courses for Estonians who are interested in the Chinese language and eager to understand the Chinese culture.Tallinn University is the sole university in this Baltic country that boasts a Chinese major. It has enrolled Chinese- learning students in the past two decades.Rein Raud, rector of the university, reached an agreement with China's Hanban to set up a Confucius Institute on campus during a visit to Beijing in February. Guangxi University was chosen at the time to be its Chinese partner.The Confucius Institute at Tallinn University will offer the public three-month-long courses that teach both the Chinese language and the Chinese culture.The first set of those courses has been overbooked by Estonians, as more and more people in the country become interested in the language and culture of a booming China.Li, while talking with students majoring in Chinese at Tallinn University, encouraged them to study hard and learn more about the Chinese culture."I hope you can be ambassadors of cultural exchanges between China and Estonia, proponents of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and even Sinologists," he said.He added that cultural exchanges are meaningful projects which can "sow the seeds of friendship between China and Estonia" and play an important role in the overall bilateral relationship."The steady development of state-to-state relations is based on favorable public opinions toward each other, which can be nurtured through cultural exchanges," he said.Raud said the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the university was a landmark event in Chinese language learning and the spread of the Chinese culture in Estonia.He pledged to work closely with Guangxi University to build the Confucius Institute into a center for spreading the Chinese culture in the Baltic region.Earlier in the day, Li met with a senior Estonian parliament member on bilateral relations.He also paid a visit to the Port of Tallinn and was briefed on its latest development plans. DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four Japanese are being investigated in China for having entered a military zone without authorization and illegally videotaped military targets in northern Hebei Province, local state security authorities said Thursday.The state security authorities in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei, have taken measures against the four people according to law after receiving a report about their illegal activities.The authorities only gave one name of the four Japanese nationals, Sada Takahashi."Currently, the case is being investigated," the state security authorities in Shijiazhuang said in a statement.No further details were provided.
