SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at 1525 Fourth Ave.Rev. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. Attendees will receive a free hot breakfast, free clothes and children will receive free gifts.The event begins at 7 a.m. at 6125 Imperial Ave. According to Harris, the breakfast is open to the public, but foster families, low-income residents, homeless residents and military veterans are all encouraged to attend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man convicted of sex crimes against children in Northern California who was recommended for conditional release to a Pauma Valley home will no longer be considered for placement in San Diego County, prosecutors said Friday.Joshua Cooley, 40, is classified as a Sexually Violent Predator, a designation for those convicted of sexually violent offenses and diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them likely to re-offend.According to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Cooley was convicted in Humboldt County of sex crimes against underage girls.The Department of State Hospitals recently recommended placing Cooley at 15077 Adams Drive after attempts to find a suitable Humboldt County location were unsuccessful, according to the DA's Office.The address is the same location where another Sexually Violent Predator, Joseph Bocklett, was recently recommended for release. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Howard Shore ultimately decided against the placement, ruling that it would bring the 76-year-old Bocklett too close to areas frequented by families.San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan lodged a strong objection to Cooley's proposed placement, citing Shore's ruling and the potential risks to the public."Ignoring and overlooking Judge Shore's thorough, thoughtful and well- reasoned conclusions and continuing to consider this location for placement of an SVP is reckless and irresponsible," Stephan wrote in a letter to Liberty Healthcare and the California Department of State Hospitals, which are tasked with locating suitable post-release housing for sexual predators.Stephan wrote that if the placement was considered inappropriate for Bocklett, a senior citizen, the much younger Cooley represented an even greater risk.According to the DA's Office, Liberty Healthcare has stated that the recommendation was made in error, and the Department of State Hospitals no longer feels the Pauma Valley address is a suitable location for Cooley. An Oct. 9 virtual court hearing was scheduled in Humboldt County Superior Court to discuss the proposed placement, but that hearing has since been vacated."This placement would have put children and families at risk, so we went to battle alongside our community, and we prevailed," Stephan said. "I want to acknowledge that the system worked in that the State Department of Hospitals gave serious consideration to our concerns and spared us from an extended legal battle in court. They showed that they care about our community. I also want to acknowledge the SAFE Task Force, led by the sheriff's department, for all their work giving notification and gathering input from the community. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A mosquito caught in routine trapping in the Black Mountain Ranch area has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first appearance of the virus in San Diego County in 2020.County environmental health officials remind people to protect themselves from mosquitoes, which can potentially transmit, disease by following the county's "Prevent, Protect, Report" guidelines -- including finding and dumping out standing water in yards and around homes to keep mosquitoes from breeding.Incidences of West Nile virus were mild in San Diego County in 2019. Three people tested positive, but there were no fatalities and all three people were suspected of having contracted the virus while outside the county.However, West Nile virus remains a potentially deadly threat in San Diego County and the state, officials said. In 2015, 44 San Diego County residents tested positive for West Nile virus and six died. In 2019, 225 California residents became sick from West Nile virus and six died, according to the California Department of Public Health.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease, but it can be transmitted to humans by a number of species of mosquitoes -- including Culex mosquitoes native to San Diego and, less effectively, by invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes also found in the county -- if they feed off an infected animal, mainly birds, and then bite people.Eight out of 10 people who get infected never suffer any symptoms. The 20% who do generally suffer mild symptoms including headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. But in rare cases, West Nile virus can make people extremely ill and even kill them.Protecting against mosquitoes has become even more important for San Diego County residents in recent years. Since 2014, three types of day-biting, invasive Aedes mosquitoes have been found in the county. All of these mosquitoes tend to live and breed near people, in yards and even inside homes.Two of these species can potentially transmit diseases not naturally found here. Those include chikungunya, dengue and Zika -- but only if mosquitoes first bite an infected person. In general, that means local invasive Aedes mosquitoes could only transmit those diseases if they found and bit San Diego County residents who picked up the virus while traveling and returned home still infected.San Diego County residents may be more vulnerable to being bitten by mosquitoes around their homes now because many have been spending more time at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Environmental health officials remind people to dump out or remove any item inside or outside of homes that can hold water, such as plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, garbage cans, toys, old tires and wheelbarrows.Mosquito fish, available for free by contacting the Vector Control Program, may be used to control mosquito breeding in backyard water sources such as stagnant swimming pools, ponds, fountains and horse troughs.Wear long sleeves and pants or use insect repellent when outdoors. Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good condition and secured to keep insects out.Report increased mosquito activity, or stagnant, green swimming pools and other mosquito-breeding sources, as well as dead birds -- crows, ravens, jays, hawks and owls -- to environmental health's Vector Control Program by calling 858-694-2888 or emailing vector@sdcounty.ca.gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Jurors reached a verdict Tuesday in the trial of a Navy SEAL accused of fatally stabbing a wounded teenage ISIS fighter in the neck, shooting at numerous Iraqi civilians and threatening fellow SEALs to keep them from reporting him.Jurors found Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher not guilty on six out of seven charges, including not guilty verdicts for premeditated murder, two charges of attempted premeditated murder, obstruction of justice, retaliation, and willful discharge of a weapon. Jurors did find him guilty of wrongfully posing for a photo with the teen's body. That guilty charge carries a possible sentence up to four months. 673

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As a county with the third highest population of veterans in the United States, San Diego County has multiple events Wednesday meant to honor those who served in the Armed Forces.Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, announced the formation of a panel of servicemembers, veterans, and other community leaders who will work together on recommendations to name either an Oceanside or San Diego Department of Veterans Affairs facility after a woman veteran.The VA Facility Dedication Advisory Panel will compile a report on notable women veterans with ties to the region who are worthy of the honor. Currently, there are no VA facilities in the United States that are named after women veterans, and neither the San Diego VA Medical Center nor the Oceanside VA Clinic are named after an individual.The panel is led by Army Veteran and Carlsbad resident Karin Brennan."Throughout our nation's history, women have served and sacrificed for our freedom just like men, but have often gone without the recognition they deserve," Levin said."It is past time to rectify that injustice and live up to our responsibility to honor all veterans, including women. It's disappointing that not a single VA facility in the country is named after a woman veteran, but we can change that here in our district."In September 2020, the VA released the 2020 Report of its Advisory Committee on Women Veterans. The committee made seven recommendations to VA, one of which is the inclusionary branding of VA facilities. There will be live demonstrations by the U.S. Coast Guard as well as vintage Aircraft Flyovers and other attractions on the bay.-- The USS Midway Museum will hold a variety of events, including two precision parachute jumps by the U.S. Navy's "Leap Frogs" onto the ship's flight deck at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Along with active-duty Navy SEALS, the parachuting demonstration will include a SEAL veteran.The Midway will feature an art exhibition on its flight deck by Navy Chief Petty Officer Joe Pisano. His work is considered "3D industrial," and uses items like drywall screws, dog tags and golf tees.The San Diego Blood Bank will have its mobile tent outside the Midway Museum. Donors will receive one ticket for entry into the museum. Veterans and active duty military will get free admission all day.Lastly, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the USS Midway Museum will conduct a special broadcast of its "Destination Midway" live webcast series at 12:30 p.m. The webcast will feature ship historian Karl Zingheim as he interviews four WWII veterans.-- Meals on Wheels San Diego County, a nonprofit organization that supports the independence and well-being of seniors in need by delivering them nutritious meals, will make a special delivery to honor an Oceanside veteran.Brent Wakefield, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels San Diego County, will deliver meals to World War II Navy veteran Ed Kruck and thank him for his service. Additionally, his son, Ed Jr. -- who is also a Vietnam War veteran -- will join him.-- Honor Flight San Diego will host a "Parade of Honor." The socially-distanced, no-contact, drive-thru parade through the Kearny Mesa neighborhood is for military veterans of all eras.At the end of the route, every military veteran will receive a care package from Operation Gratitude and Honor Flight San Diego. Operation Gratitude donated the items for the 1,000 care packages and Honor Flight San Diego collected over 3,000 letters from community supporters around the country.
