SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whale watchers have been delighting over an invasion of humpback whales off San Diego’s coast.Domenic Biagini is a photographer for San Diego Whale Watch. He says the numbers in recent days have been unprecedented in San Diego “We’ve had a huge influx of humpback whales that have pretty much shown us all of their unique behaviors, lunge feeding, breaching, tail-throwing,” said Biagini. “They’ve given us it all on every trip, they’ve been mixed in with dolphins, it’s been really special out here.”RELATED: Break from town: Where to take a day trip from San DiegoBiagini says the influx is due to massive amounts of bait, including one school of anchovies the size of a football field. “Rarely do we see double-digit whales, some of these days we’ve seen over 20 whales all in one area feeding, and almost always when they’ve been feeding they’ve had thousands of common dolphins around them, sea lions nearing the hundreds.”RELATED: San Diegan's PB phone pic up for Smithsonian photo of the yearBiagini captures it all on his drone and says it’s been some of the most spectacular footage he's gotten in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two competing plans are on the table to redevelop the Tailgate Lot a block from Petco Park into a mixed-use area with park space, retail and office, and housing.The City of San Diego has launched a virtual open house for residents to provide feedback on two plans to develop the Tailgate Lot in a mixed-use area. Residents have through Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, to give their feedback.One of the plans was developed by Brookfield Properties and the other between the San Diego Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital. Both plans call for a combination of office, retail, and residential space and open park space and parking.Brookfield Properties' plan calls for about 1.2 million square feet of mixed-use office and retail space, about 1,200 residential units, and 1.1 acres of park and community space. The plan also highlights developing a tailgate park, "bazaar" marketplace, and a gateway to public transit.Brookfield's plan also includes a culinary incubator for restaurant startups and makers, including 15 restaurant spaces and a community kitchen.The plan by the Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital also features about 1.35 million square feet of office space, 612 market rate and affordable housing units, 236,000 square feet of open space, and 1,600-space parking garage for games and ballpark events.The parking garage would also include a multi-use field on the roof for recreational activities. The plan says that the spaces will be shared with tenants when not in use for games and events.The Tailgate Lot property includes 15 parcels of land, or about 5.25 net acres, between K Street and Imperial Avenue and 12th Ave. and 14th St. The parking is currently leased to the Padres.The city's plan is to submit an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement to City Council in October or November 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Police sent out a warning to Faculty and Staff about a series of burglaries this week. The email states the thefts occurred at occupied and unlocked apartments. There were three cases of break-ins and attempted break-ins that took place in campus housing complexes. There was another report of a car break-in. But UC San Diego police say the San Diego Police Department is working on nearly 30 burglary cases in the similar area. According to UCSD Police, on Tuesday, a woman at The La Jolla Del Sol apartments reported getting out of the shower and finding a female intruder. The resident yelled, and the thief took off with a backpack, cell phone, purse, and laptop. On Sunday, a resident at the Mesa Nueva Apartments reported a male intruder removing the screen from his living room window. On Monday a similar report out of the Sixth College Apartments for undergraduates. In both cases, the resident interrupted the break-ins, and the suspect took off. They are working with San Diego police to determine whether they are connected to any of their 30 or so burglary cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With rising home prices and amid an affordability crisis, a weaker housing market is being predicted in 2019 by the California Association of Realtors.The report seems to confirm a report published earlier Thursday morning by Trulia. Home sales are already seeing a slump compared to 2017 and the trend is expected to continue in 2019, with an expected 3.3 percent drop.“While home prices are predicted to temper next year, interest rates will likely rise and compound housing affordability issues,” said C.A.R. President Steve White.“Would-be buyers who are concerned that home prices may have peaked will wait on the sidelines until they have more clarity on where the housing market is headed. This could hold back housing demand and hamper home sales in 2019.”Meanwhile, the median home price is forecast to increase by 3.1 percent to 3,450 in 2019, following a 7 percent increase in 2018.The association added that the surge in home prices due to supply shortages is finally taking a toll on the market. Adding more uncertainty is outmigration, according to the association.Outmigration is the result of the state’s housing affordability crisis, which is predicted to be a concern for the California housing market in 2019 as interest rates continue to rise.According to the organization, 28 percent of homebuyers moved out of the county they previously lived in, up from 21 percent in 2017.The association warns that outmigration will continue as long as home prices remain out of reach and interest rates rise in the upcoming year. 1574
