For the ladies in this gym, age isn't the number that matters most. "I’m going to be building up to 200. I want to get that done before I’m 80 years old,” says 78-year-old Bonnie Thurston on how much she can deadlift. Thurston says she’s been active her whole life, but never thought she would powerlift. Seven years ago, Thurston struggled with osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, increasing risk of fractures. Then, Thurston found a powerlifting group for seniors. "I now weigh more than I weighed when I started this, but I wear the same size clothes, and the reason is I have stronger bones and larger bones and more muscle in my body than I did when I started this," she says. These group of seniors deadlift; they bench and they pull sleds. And while Thurston is doing all of this, she pushes 80. Thurston is not even the oldest person at the gym. Edith Murway-Traina is a member and is 97 years old. “I've always had muscles, I just had to learn to use them," she says. Bill Beekley leads the group. He's trained powerlifters since the 90s. "Don't be intimidated by what these ladies are doing, because they all started just moving their bodies," Beekley says. He says lifting correctly can help increase bone density and fight conditions like osteoporosis. It also helps these women in everyday life. "It's very functional,” the instructor says. “Some say they can carry their groceries a little easier now and don't need help getting groceries in an out of the car.” For 97-year-old Murway-Traina, she says that movement is so important as she nears 100. “The more you move, the more exercise you get, the more your body responds,” she says. Murway-Traina says she was nervous about the idea of powerlifting at first, but she now does it three times a week. "When you start being too old for something, you are too old for something, you have to know you are capable of doing what you want to make yourself do," Murway-Traina says. Research agrees. ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colorado — An argument over not getting recognition for testing done at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy led one of the school’s deans of instruction to bring a gun to campus and threaten school officials earlier this week, an affidavit released Friday reveals. Tushar Rae, 30, was arrested Wednesday and remains in Denver jail on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds, a class 6 felony; as well as carrying a concealed weapon, a class 2 misdemeanor. His bond was set at 0,000. The affidavit states Principal Taisiya “Taya” Tselolikhina had an argument with Rae on Tuesday over testing that the school was administering to students “and about not receiving acknowledgement and recognition he felt was owed.” The following day, Tselolikhina received a text at around 2 p.m. from Rae, telling her to meet in his office after the dean of instruction didn’t show up to school the whole day, and didn't inform anyone he was going to be absent.Once in the office, Rae reportedly pulled a black handgun from his waistband and placed the gun on the counter. Rae then said, “Try and f—k with me. You shouldn’t have said what you said. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m going to hurt all the people around you,” according to the affidavit. He then said he was going to “shoot the kneecaps off of Jessica and Denise.” Jessica Rodriguez is an assistant principal at the school and Denise Huber is another dean of instruction. The probable cause statement notes he then asked the principal what she was going to do about it. "I came prepared,” Rae allegedly told Tselolikhina before he patted his pocket adding that “he had two extra rounds.” Rae then told the principal to walk away or he would “shoot the next person outside the door,” police documents state. As he made the statement, there was a knock on the door. Rae then reportedly picked up the gun and placed it back into his waistband and answered the door. On the other side were two students and the report states Rae had a brief talk with them. It does not state, however, what the dean of instruction told the students. Tselolikhina then left Rae’s office and began to place the school on lockdown, according to the affidavit. The incident “prompted a large scale police call for service and numerous officers responded to the school,” the probable cause statement states. Investigators said one of the responding officers talked with the principal while another was on the phone with the suspect, who did not initially tell the officer where he was. Rae then told the officer that some of the school staff had been harassing him, but the suspect did not provide further details to the officer during their conversation. According to the affidavit, Rae also admitted to sending text messages earlier “that he should not have sent,” but it’s unclear what the content of those message was, as the suspect did not provide further details to police. The probable cause statement states Rae “expressed concern” about the school being on lockdown and told the officer on the phone he wanted the lockdown lifted so the soccer team could play a game scheduled for later that day. The suspect then told the officer he was at his house and police went to his address, where they found a Remington handgun and three magazines in Rae’s bedroom cabinet. He was arrested and held on a bond on suspicion of felony menacing and misdemeanor interference with staff, faculty, or students of educational institutions, but posted pond and was released before he was able to be issued a restraining order. His bonding out caused Aurora Police to send officers to Aurora West College Preparatory Academy as well as the homes of school staff to make sure they were safe. Rae was then booked into Denver’s Downtown Detention Center on Thursday on a fugitive of justice hold from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd on Wednesday announced the arrests of three suspects in connection to a group of friends murdered during a fishing trip in Florida on Friday. Damion Tillman, 23, Keven Springfield, 30, and Brandon Rollins, 27, were all killed while fishing in unincorporated Frostproof on July 17. The sheriff's office arrested Tony "TJ" Wiggins, 26, his girlfriend Mary Whittemore, 27, and Tony's brother William "Robert" Wiggins, 21, in relation to the murders. Judd described Tony as "pure evil in the flesh" and said he has 230 previous felony charges. According to a press release, the sheriff's office found a Dollar General bag at the crime scene with a receipt from that day of the crime. Detectives went to the store and reviewed surveillance footage. The release says one of the victims, Damion Tillman, was seen in the video along with all of the suspects. According to the release, the cashier said Tillman was a regular at the store and mentioned that he was going fishing that night. The clerk told detectives the suspects heard Tillman say he was going fishing and that "Keven" would be there with him. Keven Springfield, 30, was another of the victims. The clerk heard the suspects talk about what they heard among themselves, the release says. Detectives said they also received tips that one of the suspects might be Tony Wiggins. On Monday, the sheriff's office served a search warrant on a piece of land in Lake Wales where the suspects were living. Tony and Whittemore lived in one travel trailer on the property and William lived in another trailer on the same property. During the search, detectives found two SKS rifles, two Mossberg shotguns and ammunition for both in a gun safe belonging to Tony. Tony was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Detectives also found ammunition during the search and compared it to shell casings from the crime scene. The ammo was sent to the FDLE and testing showed that it was the same as that fired from a Smith & Wesson handgun the night of the murders, according to a press release. Detectives say Whittemore bought the ammo found at the scene for Tony in Lake Wales on July 9. According to the release, the two are seen in surveillance video from the store and detectives found a receipt that confirmed the purchase. When all three suspects were interviewed, detectives say their stories contradicted each other. Whittemore admitted to buying the ammo and being with the brothers the night of the murder but didn't make any additional statements, according to authorities. When William Wiggins was interviewed again, detectives said he admitted to seeing Tillman, one of the victims, in the store. William told detectives when they left the store, his brother Tony directed him to turn onto a specific road instead of going home. According to authorities, while on the road two trucks that were occupied by the three victims passed the brothers. Tony told his brother to make a U-turn and follow them, according to authorities. William told detectives they followed the trucks to the crime scene area and that he stayed in the truck while his brother Tony got out and confronted Keven Springfield. According to a press release, Tony punched Springfield and accused him of stealing his truck. The release says the other two victims, Brandon Rollins and Damion Tillman, got out of their truck and Tony continued to yell at all of them. William told detectives he watched as his brother Tony shot all three victims, according to the sheriff's office. Judd said during a press conference on Wednesday that Tony shot the victims several times, the exact number is still being investigated. The sheriff's office said on Saturday that one of the victims, Rollins, called his dad for help from the scene. When his dad got there, he found his son barely alive. Sheriff Judd said the victim's dad drove to a close-by gas station to call 911. Deputies responded and found all three victims dead. A couple involved in a confrontation with a mother and daughter outside a Chipotle in Orion Township, Michigan, have been charged with felonious assault, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.The charges against Jillian Wuestenberg, 32, and her husband, Eric Wuestenberg, 42, were announced by Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard on Thursday during a press conference, which followed video of the incident going viral.
