LA JOLLA, Calif., (KGTV)-- Several people at the University of California, San Diego [UCSD] were hospitalized early Saturday over alcohol poisoning, the school confirmed.A spokeswoman for UCSD told 10News that a total of seven people were taken to the hospital between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM Saturday for severe alcohol poisoning. The emergency calls came from three locations on campus. One was from the undergraduate dormitories at Eleanor Roosevelt College, and two ambulances were dispatched to the Graduate Housing buildings. The school could not confirm if the patients were UCSD students or guests. While drinking is allowed on campus for students 21-and-over, the spokesperson did not say whether the hospitalized people were of age.10News spoke to students who recalled a lot of partying going on campus Friday night, where students appeared to be celebrating the end of finals and start of winter break."It was finals week, so it was very hectic," third-year student, Tyla Turner said. "It's like, you've been so much in the books for three to four weeks, you can finally go out. And it's like once you haven't been doing it that much, alcohol poisoning comes faster. It just hits you like that, you know?"These incidents come just a month after Dylan Hernandez, a freshman at neighboring San Diego State University died, after falling off a bunk bed while heavily intoxicated. Hernandez allegedly attended a fraternity party the evening before the fall. Since then, the state University has suspended all fraternity activities.To prevent tragedies like this from happening, last year, UCSD implemented a special policy for situations involving alcohol and drug intoxication. They call it the Medical Amnesty Program [MAP]. MAP states that if a student or organization finds another student in need of medical attention after drug or alcohol intoxication, they can call their advisor or campus police for help. As long as that student only uses the MAP policy once within two years, he or she will not have to go through a formal student conduct process. Second-year student Sydney Brown said she had no idea this policy existed. But she appreciates that this is in place to protect her peers. "If you're ever in that situation, you don't want to get your friend in trouble. You don't want to get in trouble. But if it's a life or death situation, you got to do what you have to do," Brown said. UCSD said everyone transported to the hospital was treated for non-life threatening conditions. 2507

(KGTV) -- The woman authorities say was hit and killed by a suspected DUI driver Monday evening has been identified as 41-year-old Susana Gotell. Throughout the day Tuesday, flowers brought to the area by residents adorned the place where Gotell was killed. Meanwhile, the Santee man who officers say was driving under the influence could face first-degree murder charges.CHP says the driver, Michael Woodfill, 46, hit a fence on North Woodside Avenue around 6:30 p.m. When Woodfill tried to get back onto the road, he overcorrected, crossing both lanes and hitting the jogger.RELATED: Woman hit, killed by suspected DUI driver in LakesideOfficers returned to the scene Tuesday to reconstruct the scene. Woodfill had a DUI back in 2016 after officers say he was found with an excessive blood alcohol level. One month later, his license was reinstated with restrictions. Earlier this year, Woodfill’s license was also suspended after officials say he had no insurance, but was later reinstated five days later.When the crash happened Monday, Woodfill was driving on a restricted license. Woodfill is currently being held without bail after being arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. 1256

Ready-to-eat pre-made tamales give customers a piece of home cooking.“It comes from like grandma the night before getting everything ready for Christmas Eve,” Zaira Contreras, who works in marketing for the supermarket, said.It’s a holiday tradition for many Hispanic families. But this year, their tortilleria is extra busy. Workers say sales of masa have skyrocketed.“I was just talking to one of the guys and he was saying that production has not stopped in these couple weeks,” she said.They’re noticing more families deciding to make their own tamales meaning more people are staying at home, likely with just their immediate families.“More people have time at home, they want to try and make them. Less than 11 months after Cameron Underwood underwent a face transplant, the 26-year-old is revealing himself to the world.Underwood, of Yuba City, California, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot to the face in June 2016. The extensive damage left him missing most of his lower jaw, his nose and every tooth but one, a statement said. He also experienced damage to his upper face and palate.Conventional reconstructive surgery, which he reportedly tried several times, could only do so much.Then, Underwood's mother, Beverly Bailey-Potter, read a magazine article about Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, a professor of reconstructive plastic surgery and the chair of the plastic surgery department at NYU Langone Health."We knew he was the only person to whom we would trust Cameron's life," she said in the release from the hospital. "We were willing to travel the long distance."Since the first face transplant was done in France in 2005, more than 40 have been completed around the world.NYU Langone Health has completed two of the procedures and has a designated face transplantation program, one of just a handful in the United States. Rodriguez completed two previous face transplants, the first at University of Maryland, and headed up a team of more than 100 medical professionals who tackled Underwood's case.The transplant surgery lasted about 25 hours.Underwood's journey has been marked by milestones.The time between his injury and face transplant was just about 18 months, the shortest period between the two in publicly reported cases in the United States, the hospital said.This is significant in helping his physical, emotional and psychological recovery, Rodriguez said."Cameron has not lived with his injury for a decade or longer like most other face transplant recipients have," Rodriguez said in the statement. "As a result, he has not had to deal with many of the long-term psycho-social issues which often lead to issues like severe depression, substance abuse, and other potentially harmful behaviors."Underwood also experienced one of the shortest wait times for a donor, the hospital said. Once he was approved for a transplant by NYU Langone and put on the list for organ donation, he waited only six months for the early January call that would change his life.His donor was William Fisher, a 23-year-old resident of New York who was an aspiring filmmaker and writer. Fisher, who registered as an organ donor when he was a teen, gave to more than just Underwood. He also gave his heart, kidneys, liver, eyes and other tissues.In honoring her son's wishes, Fisher's heartbroken mother got something in return."Being a part of this experience has been a source of strength for me during a very difficult time," she said in the statement. "I don't think I would have survived Will's death if not for Cameron. Cameron has his whole life ahead of him -- and I love the idea that Willie is helping him have a better life."Underwood was discharged from the hospital in mid-February but initially stayed in New York for rehabilitation, which included speech therapy, and orthodontic treatment. By the end of March, he was home in California -- though he's made monthly trips back to New York for followup visits.He will remain on anti-rejection drugs throughout his life but to date has responded well. And he's grateful for this second chance at life -- and the medical team and donor who made it possible."We hope my experience inspires others who have severe facial injuries to have hope, as I was inspired by others who came before me," Underwood said in the statement. LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A man who police say brandished a gun from a van and a woman who then crashed the car with five children inside, injuring them, have been arrested. A person on Friday night reported that a man in La Mesa had a gun inside a moving vehicle. Police say an officer later tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Shortly thereafter, the car crashed. The officer pursuing the suspect found five children inside without car seats. Police say the children suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further tests. 573
