SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man climbed through a window of a Pacific Beach home Monday morning and attacked a woman in her bedroom before fleeing, police said.Dispatchers received a call around 5:15 a.m. from the victim, who reported that she found a man in her bedroom after he apparently entered through a window of her home on Grand Avenue near Olney Street, San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The woman also reported that the man had attacked her, but she was able to get away and lock herself in her roommate's bedroom before calling police, Hernandez said.Officers arrived and searched the home, but found no one inside. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry jumped into second place Monday in the San Diego mayoral primary election, leapfrogging over Councilman Scott Sherman.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters could be faced with a choice between presumptive front-runner Assemblyman Todd Gloria, a Democrat, and Republican Sherman -- or another Democrat in Bry.The latter option would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Bry currently leads Sherman by just nine votes out of 338,673 counted in the race so far -- or .0026% of the vote.With a projected 37,000 provisional ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes officially made up, the race could prove exceedingly close.If Bry were to gain votes at the same rate as Monday -- which is far from assured -- she would win by just under 500 votes.In the race for City Council District 1, Will Moore maintained his lead over Aaron Brennan for second place. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - CVS Health announced Thursday it is expanding its COVID- 19 no-cost testing program by adding 35 more test sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thrus across California, including three locations in San Diego County, amid a surge in new coronavirus cases.The opening of additional test sites on Friday adds to the 107 locations previously opened statewide, including 14 in San Diego County.The nearly 200 additional test sites opening across the country this week are among the more than 1,400 locations CVS Health has opened since May and expand the company's testing capacity to more than 1.5 million tests per month, subject to availability of supplies and lab capacity, according to President and CEO Larry J. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As more people went back to work last month, the region's unemployment dropped to 13.9% in June, 1.3% lower than the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.The coronavirus and its related job loss still looms large over the economy even as some industries begin to resume business. The state's unemployment rate dropped to 15.1% in June, while nationally, the rate decreased to 11.2% in the same time period. The data does not reflect public health orders in July shutting down some industries again. The unemployment rate is likely higher now than the period the data monitored.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 54,000 jobs between May and June to reach about 1.35 million. It was the first increase in non-farm employment since February. Farm jobs remained steady.The leisure and hospitality sector led the monthly increase by adding 34,700 jobs, 29,900 of which were in the food service and accommodation industries. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 4,800 jobs.The trade, transportation and utilities sector logged 9,500 jobs gained month-over-month, the largest portion of which was in clothing and clothing accessories stores, with 3,900 added jobs.Construction gained 4,100, educational and health services 2,800, other services 2,200, manufacturing 1,900, professional and business services 1,600, financial activities 900 and information 200.Mining and logging employment did not show any gains or losses.The only industry to lose jobs was the government sector, which lost 3,900 jobs in June.Comparing year-over-year, the San Diego region lost 153,600 non-farm jobs and 800 agricultural jobs. Unsurprisingly, leisure and hospitality were top in jobs lost, with a total of 57,300 jobs lost since last June -- 42,800 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since this period in 2019, trade, transportation and utilities lost 21,900 jobs, government lost 20,400, educational and health services 15,900, other services 15,300, manufacturing 7,100, professional and business services 6,300, information 3,600, construction 3,100 and financial activities lost 2,700 jobs. 2225
