HONOLULU (AP) -- A 20-year-old woman was arrested for violating Hawaii's quarantine after investigators saw videos of her dancing in a store and dining out.Hawaii officials say Anne Salamanca arrived in Honolulu on July 6 and a few days later was found violating the quarantine.The state mandated a 14-day quarantine on arriving travelers to curb the spread of the coronavirus.KITV reports she's a "social media influencer" who arrived from Manila. The news station reports she apologized on social media and claimed law enforcement told her she could go out if she tested negative.Attorney General Clare Connors says investigators wouldn't say that. 658

Hate crime incidents reported to the FBI increased by about 17 percent last year compared to 2016, according to statistics released Tuesday by the FBI.The statistics, which were released in the bureau's annual "Hate Crime Statistics" report, are a compilation of bias-motivated incidents submitted to the FBI by 16,149 law enforcement agencies.The report found that 7,175 hate crimes were reported by law enforcement agencies in 2017, up from 6,121 reported incidents in 2016. While the number has increased, the number of agencies reporting also increased by about 1,000.Of the 7,106 single-bias hate crimes reported, 59.6 percent of victims were targeted because of the offenders' race/ethnicity/ancestry bias; 20.6 percent were targeted because of sexual-orientation bias; 1.9 percent were targeted because of gender identity bias; and 0.6 percent were targeted because of gender bias. Sixty-nine multiple bias hate crime incidents were also reported.Notably, of the 1,679 religious bias crimes reported in 2017, 58.1 percent were anti-Jewish while 18.6 percent were anti-Muslim.In a statement released Tuesday, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said the report "is a call to action -- and we will heed that call.""The Department of Justice's top priority is to reduce violent crime in America, and hate crimes are violent crimes," the statement read."I am particularly troubled by the increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes -- which were already the most common religious hate crimes in the United States -- that is well documented in this report. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Summer time for middle school students usually means taking a break from lessons and learning, but not for one 11-year-old girl in Virginia.London Hart is actually diving deeper into our country's history and studying recent events, including protests against racial injustice."Back when the protests started after the George Floyd incident, I was having a conversation my with parents about what was really going on and what was happening. They were telling me all about racism," said London.It's a conversation London said was very upsetting."Just because you're a minority, doesn't mean you should be treated unfairly. It made me unhappy that that was happening," said London.So the budding artist picked up her canvas and paintbrush and expressed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement the best way she knows how -- by painting.Then she turned those paintings into t-shirt designs."A bunch of people were really happy that I started this movement with the t-shirts and everybody was buying them and buying them and buying them," said London.London's "Support Shirts" campaign was shared so much online that it blew up."At first, I only expected to sell like 15 shirts at the most.
