ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here on Sunday with Uzbek President Islam Karimov to exchange views on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, and both leaders agreed to push forward bilateral ties. Hu is in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, for a working visit at the invitation of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.     As guests of Berdymukhamedov, Hu, Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will attend a ceremony to inaugurate the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline on Monday. High-level contacts are frequent, political trust has been intensified and cooperative projects in many fields have yielded remarkable results.     Both nations have been mutually supportive on issues concerning each other's core interests, and both have sustained communication and collaboration in international and regional affairs, Hu said.     China has always attached great importance to developing its ties with Uzbekistan, which is seen as an important partner in central Asia, Hu said, and it is China's firm policy to safeguard and develop its relations with Uzbekistan.     China is willing to work with Uzbekistan to further high-level exchanges, deepen practical cooperation, and ensure the sound and stable development of the friendly cooperative partnership, Hu said.     On the gas transportation project, Hu said the Chinese side is ready to work together with Uzbekistan and to ensure a safe and smooth operation of the pipeline, and implement the agreements concerning the expansion of bilateral cooperation in gas and petrol fields.     The 1,833-km China-Central Asia gas pipeline starts from the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and runs through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan before reaching northwest China's Xinjiang region. It is a common responsibility of all countries concerned, including China and Uzbekistan, to combat the "three forces" that engage in terrorism, separatism and extremism, and to safeguard the security and stability of the area, he said.     China is willing to consolidate contacts and cooperation with Uzbek law enforcement authorities and security departments to safeguard the national and regional stability, he said.     With the efforts of its member states, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has been striving to offset the negative impacts brought by changes in international and regional affairs. The entity has exerted an important role in promoting the stability of the Central Asian region and safeguarding the common interests of the member states, Hu said.     As the rotating chair state of the SCO, Uzbekistan has actively coordinated the body's development and made a series of significant proposals, Hu said, and such efforts were highly valued and readily bolstered by the Chinese side. China is also obliged and ready to assist Uzbekistan in the hosting of the SCO summit next year, Hu said.     Karimov, on his part, said the development of bilateral relations is not only conducive to the two countries, but is also of great significance to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region.     He said China is a most reliable and trust-worthy friend of Uzbekistan. Since the heads of state of the two countries met in Yekaterinburg in Russia earlier this year, bilateral practical cooperation have made substantial progress and entered a new era of development, and bilateral trade has grown rapidly, with a broad prospect of cooperation in the areas of natural gas, mining and cotton.     Karimov said, in response to the worsening of the international financial crisis, the Chinese government has adopted a series of effective measures to resolve the difficulties faced by China's economy and played an important role in promoting the growth of the world economy.     He said, against the backdrop of profound and complicated changes in today's world, Uzbekistan is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields. He emphasized that Uzbekistan will adhere to the one-China policy and firmly support China's strike against the "three evil forces", "Taiwan independence" and "Tibet independence".     Karimov appreciated the major and active role that China has played in handling major international issues. He thanked China for its support to Uzbekistan in becoming the chair nation of the SCO.     He said Uzbekistan is ready to work with China to host a successful SCO summit in its capital of Teshkent next year.     Hu arrived in Ashgabat Sunday morning and will leave for home Monday.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese mainland official on Wednesday urged media organizations across the Taiwan Strait to cover more stories on cross-Strait relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     Media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement, Jia said.     In light of the bright prospect of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, media exchanges between the two sides are facing unprecedented opportunities, he said.     Jia called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.     He encouraged the staff of the media industry to seek common ground while shelving differences.     On behalf of the SEF and the people in Taiwan, Chiang expressed gratitude for the mainland's donations and assistance after the island was hit by Typhoon Morakot in August.     Mainland's donations, which were transferred to Taiwan mainly through the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will be used for reconstruction in Taiwan, Chiang said.     Chiang also stressed the need for media at both sides to carry out further communication and cooperation.     According to Jia, the ARATS and the SEF had initially agreed to have the fourth round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung in mid or late December.

OTTAWA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- After four years in office, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit Beijing this week -- a trip many influential Canadians believe is long overdue.     To gauge Canadians' views of the Prime Minister's trip to China, Xinhua recently interviewed leading Canadian academics, former politicians and other opinion shapers.          A SIGNIFICANT TRIP     All the interviewees agree that this is a very significant trip, for both China and Canada, given China's stature on the world stage continues to grow.     "I think it is extremely important that China and Canada reenergize their relationship," David Emerson, Canada's former International Trade Minister, told Xinhua during a phone interview. He called the visit "an important milestone."     Former Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Pierre S. Pettigrew said the delay in making the visit was a bad start but the prime minister was correcting his mistakes.     "It took the prime minister a long time, almost four years in office before visiting China," he said.     However, Barbara McDougall, Canada's former Secretary of State for External Affairs in the early 1990s, said the timing of the Prime Minister's visit was good. "I think it will be a comfortable and productive meeting," McDougall said.     Peter Harder, President of the Canada-China Business Council, said it was an interesting moment for Harper's visit, given he was the chairman of the upcoming G8 and co-chairman of the G20 summits. Harder said the most important "deliverable" of this visit was that it took place.     "Traditionally, China and Canada have had very good relations, and this goes back a long time," said Gregory Chin, who served in Canada's embassy in Beijing from 2004 to 2006. This is an opportune moment for Prime Minister Harper and Chinese leaders to strengthen their personal relationship.     Jean Michel Laurin, Vice-President for Global Business Policy at Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, said he expected the PM's visit to help "Canadian companies and Chinese companies do more business."          TRADE, CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY     The observers said trade, climate change, and energy cooperation were likely to be among the major areas of discussion.          Nevertheless, given the world economic turmoil since late last year, the state of the global economy would also be on the agenda of both leaders.     "China has been leading Asia into economic recovery, and is becoming a more important partner to both the United States and Canada. The economy will certainly be the (most) important topic (during the visit)," said Pettigrew.     Further fuelling these discussions of the economy is the fact that next summer, as Peter Harder noted, Canada will host two key international summits, the G8 and G20. China is an influential member of the G20.     Dr. Alan Alexandroff at the University of Toronto said it would be important for Prime Minister Harper to ask for President Hu's views about what ought to be on the agenda at the G20, so Canadians could learn more about China's priorities and interests.      THIS IS NOT A ONE-OFF VISIT     One question that always hovers over trips such as Harper's is what evidence will observers weigh in order to judge whether the visit was successful?     "No doubt, the Chinese leaders and the Canadian government will do everything they can to make this meeting successful," said Harder of the Canada China Business Council. "I hope they would commit to the idea that this is not a one-off visit but the first in a series of visits. The two leaders can instruct their ministers and government staff to enhance the Canada-China investment relationship." This could be a theme for further interactions and talks at future meetings.     "If I were planning this trip, I wouldn't have high expectations in terms of particular accomplishments. I would have expectations about rebalancing bilateral relationships in a positive way, so that the two countries can work together on global issues," said McDougall, who used to hold a variety of ministerial level positions in Canadian government.     Emerson said the meeting sent a signal that Canada and China were continuing to build on their friendship and partnership that had existed between the two countries for many years. He said: "Ties cooled down in recent years. And it's time to get back down to building up friendship again."     In April, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Stockwell Day, announced that Canada would open new trade offices this year in Nanjing, Qingdao, Shenyang and Wuhan.     China-Canada economic ties have evolved from small, simple-item commodity trade into an all-dimensional cooperation covering trade in commodity and services, capital flows and personnel exchanges.     According to Chinese statistics, two-way trade increased more than 100 times from 150 million U.S. dollars in the early days of China-Canada diplomatic relations to 15.5 billion dollars in 2004.

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday highly praised the achievement of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) over the past decade, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the region's return to the motherland.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said Macao was "embracing a bright future" thanks to the mainland's support and Macao compatriots' hard work. Hu made the remarks while attending an exhibition in Beijing marking Macao's achievements in the past 10 years.     "Macao has undergone an extraordinary development over the past decade," he said, adding under the support of the central government and the Chinese mainland, the SAR government fully implemented the policies of "one country, two systems", "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy and the Basic Law.
