SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lab-confirmed flu cases increased countywide last week for the second consecutive week, county health officials announced Wednesday.The county Health and Human Services Agency confirmed 74 flu cases, an increase of 22 cases over the revised 52 confirmed the previous week. The county confirmed 30 cases during the week of Oct. 20-26.County health officials have confirmed 475 flu cases to date since tracking for the 2019-2020 flu season began July 1. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Barrels holding an unknown substance were found on a Rancho Pe?asquitos sidewalk today, and San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators were looking into it.The unidentified drums were found unattended around 9:30 a.m. on Kika Court near Mercy Road.Hazmat crews took samples from the drums but were unable to determine what substance was inside, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.Investigators left the scene, and a contractor was called in to remove and dispose of the material. 510
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con dubbed the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the disguise he wore while robbing four banks in San Diego is scheduled to be sentenced today at the downtown courthouse.James Saputo, 51, pleaded guilty in June to robbery, attempted robbery and other charges. He faces more than 130 years to life in prison.Saputo was arrested twice in 2016 on drug charges and was out of custody on bail when he committed the bank robberies in San Diego between Feb. 12 and March 30 last year, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Yturralde.The defendant is also accused of robbing seven banks in Riverside and Orange counties, the prosecutor said.Authorities nicknamed Saputo the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the elderly disguise he wore, which included a wig, glasses and a cane.Saputo's criminal record dates back to 1986. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A would-be carjacker who didn't know how to drive a stick shift was foiled when he tried to steal a car with a manual transmission in San Diego's Fox Canyon neighborhood, police said today.Two teenagers were sitting in the car around 10:45 p.m. Thursday in a hilly residential area near Auburn Drive and Wightman Street when a young man approached the window and demanded the victims' phones, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The man then demanded the victims, an 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy, get out of the car."They got out and the suspect got in and tried to drive away,'" Heims said.
