Several community activists gathered Friday to speak about a Kansas City, Missouri, officer’s arrest of a woman who was nine months pregnant.KCPD said the woman was interfering with another arrest, and that’s why they took her into custody.The woman’s attorney, Stacy Shaw, said the officers arrested her client because they were unhappy she was videotaping them at a gathering for a balloon release.Video circulated on social media of the arrest. It shows the woman face down on the ground with an officer appearing to kneel on her back.The woman was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged.Shaw on Friday said her client is still in pain and can’t walk. Her unborn child is OK, though it remains unclear if she will experience complications related to the arrest, Shaw said.Shaw and other activists present called for the arresting officer and KCPD Chief of Police Rick Smith to be terminated.The group repeated calls for action from KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas.Among the speakers Friday was Troy Robertson, who said he was present Wednesday when KCPD arrived at East 35th Street and Prospect Avenue and “harassed” the group gathered there, asking them to disperse.Robertson, who police said the owner previously had banned from the property, is the person police were attempting to arrest when the pregnant woman and others allegedly interfered, according to a KCPD spokesman.KCPD said Thursday that the business owner called them to the scene after a fight in the parking lot and asked them to make non-customers leave the premises.Robertson said he “doesn’t see color, only beautiful lives,” and that everyone should be held accountable for their actions. It marked the 18th consecutive week of protests outside of police headquarters.Protestors told KSHB the arrest video reinvigorated their resolve, and they plan on “occupying” the south side lawn of City Hall near East 12th and Locust streets until their demands are met.KCPD released a video on YouTube between the press conference and protest Friday from a city camera that shows the parking lot where the gathering happened as well as the aftermath of the arrest. 41 Action News requested a copy of the video without the added graphics, but KCPD denied the request.According to police, officers were called to the gas station two hours before the incident caught on camera around 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. Starbucks has reached gender and race pay equity among all US employees in similar roles, the company said on Wednesday."This milestone is the result of years of work and commitment," said Lucy Helm, executive vice president and chief partner officer at Starbucks, in a statement."We've worked hard for a couple of years now to ensure we can get there," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told CNN's Maggie Lake on Wednesday.The coffee company added that it will now tell American job candidates the pay range for any position in an effort to increase transparency.Helm explained that the company has been striving for pay equity for about decade. Last year, it was at 99.7% parity. Women make up about one-third of the company's executive team.Starbucks uses several tools to make sure bias doesn't impact how much employees make. The company regularly checks for compensation gaps among employees, and uses a calculator to determine starting pay rate targets based on experience. It doesn't ask job candidates about their salary history, and the company analyzes raises to make sure they're fair.It is working with women's organizations like Billie Jean King's Leadership Initiative and the National Partnership for Women & Families to help guide its efforts."One of the most important things to get right is starting pay," said Sara Bowen, the leader of the Starbucks Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility team.Research shows that women, on average, earn around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. The gap is even wider for women of color."If a job candidate comes to Starbucks making 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, and we use that as the basis for her pay at Starbucks, we simply import gender inequality into our own system," she said. "Prior salary can be tainted and should not dictate how we pay."Johnson told Lake that the pay parity achievement is "another example of us taking care of our [employees]."The company also made a commitment to reach gender pay parity at all of its company-owned locations around the world.A number of companies are starting to pay attention to gender wage gaps among their own employees.In a recent survey of human resources executives from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement service firm, 48% of companies say they're reviewing their pay policies with an eye toward closing the compensation gap between male and female employees.Others are making changes already.After disclosing small differences in employee pay earlier this year, Citigroup announced it will give raises to even salaries between men, women and minority employees. At Salesforce, CEO Marc Benioff says the company has spent around million to raise women's salaries so they're equal to men's.Other companies like Whole Foods have implemented salary transparency policies that eliminate the secrecy surrounding pay.  2863

  

Starbucks is closing an additional 100 stores in the US within the next year because of shifting consumer habits due to COVID-19.With fewer people working in urban centers, the coffee giant is responding by setting up more stores in the suburbs.There's also less customer traffic during the week now but that is offset by more coffee being sold on weekends.Starbucks has become more focused on drive-thru's and carryout, with fewer customers lingering inside because of social distancing.The store closings are in addition to 400 previously announced for the US, and another 200 for Canada.Still, with Starbucks planning 850 new stores at the same time, there will actually be a net gain of 50 new stores next year.No word has been released on where the new stories will be built and which stores are closing. 817
